My closet has grown to be a healthy mix of both timeless pieces and trendy items. While I try to invest in clothing that will last me for years, I have found that it’s not uncommon for certain items to start looking ratty and worn out after a year of regular use. In this post, I want to share with you some of the items that I replace yearly to keep my wardrobe looking its best.

Items I Replace Yearly in My Wardrobe

Basic Tees

First things first: the classic white T-shirt and black T-shirt. These basic tees are the foundation of so many outfits, and they’re the ultimate in versatility. I buy a few new ones every year to replace the ones that have become worn or stretched out. They’re perfect for layering under blazers or jackets or for wearing on their own with jeans or shorts.

Amazon Essentials Shirt (Large) || HeyNuts Essential 7/8 Leggings (Large) || P448 Sneakers (Size 9) || Quilted Crossbody Bag

I’ve really found myself liking the basic pieces from the Amazon Essentials line, like this Amazon Essentials shirt with a high-low design that I love! It’s the perfect basic white tee to add to your closet as it’s great for layering, and it can be worn with so many different bottoms.

I have black tees in all different price ranges, but the ones by Madewell seem to be my favorite. These are not thick, but they aren’t see-through thin either. They are soft to the touch, and the cut flatters my body shape. I usually order large tees because I don’t want them to cling to me or shrink in the dryer.

Undergarments

Next up: bras. Let’s be real, bras don’t last forever. They lose their elasticity and support over time, and it’s important to replace them regularly to ensure that you’re getting the support you need. I like to invest in a few high-quality bras each year to keep things fresh and comfortable.

You can read about some of my favorite bras in these posts: Taking Care Of The Girls, 7 Bras Every Woman Over 50 Should Own, The Best Sports Bras for Women Over 50, and Comfortable and Supportive Strapless Bras for Women Over 50.

Socks are also on my yearly replacement list. These are one of the items that get the most wear and tear, so it’s important to replace them regularly. I love treating myself to some fun and colorful socks each year to add a little bit of personality to my wardrobe, even if nobody sees them but me! I’ve been loving Bombas lately (you can read my honest review here), but I’ve also shared about a lot of other great types in The Most Loved No-Show Socks For Women Over 50 and The Best Tights and Socks For Fall and Winter.

Raise your hand if it’s been a minute since you bought new panties. Did you know that if you’ve had your panties for 6 – 12 months, experts say to toss them? I think I had some pairs that remembered pay phones before I saw that tip and finally decided to clean out my drawer! You can read about some of my underwear recommendations in this post.

Footwear

I typically find flip flops and sandals are another item that I replace each year. I wear sandals almost every day from spring until fall, so I like to invest in a few pairs of high-quality sandals each year to keep my feet happy and stylish.

The HOKA Recovery Slides look horrible, but I would fight you if you tried to take them away from me. I was having horrible issues with plantar fasciitis, but since I started wearing these, it has disappeared. I bought a pair for both of my sons, and they also swear by them. This is the one time that fashion is taking a backseat to comfort!

You will catch me wearing my Birkenstock look-alikes with jeans and denim shorts all spring and summer long. They’re both comfortable and casual, but they are affordable enough that I can replace them if they get worn out!

I also typically pick up a new pair or two (or ten, LOL) of dressier sandals to wear for church, going out to dinner, or vacation. I usually wait until the end of the winter to start purchasing these so I can see what unique features are trending for the new year, like braided straps, block heels, platform soles, etc.

Denim

While I don’t necessarily replace all of my denim each year, I do like to stay on top of the latest trends and invest in a few new pieces each season. You never know what brands and influencers will decide is the new “it” jean silhouette each year. I’m all for wearing what you love, but it’s always good to add something new to your wardrobe.

Keeping up with the latest trends helps to keep me looking modern and youthful. All trends aren’t for me, but I’m embracing wearing some fun styles like wide-leg jeans, frayed hems, and even denim skirts! You can find more pairs of trending jeans in this post.

Workout Apparel and Tennis Shoes

It’s important to replace your workout clothing like leggings or workout tops regularly to ensure that they’re providing the support and compression you need. Sweaty and stretched-out workout clothes can also harbor bacteria and cause breakouts, so it’s important to wash them regularly and replace them when they start to look worn out. This post is full of great pieces if your workout wardrobe is in need of an upgrade!

Most experts recommend replacing your workout shoes every 300-500 miles or every 6-8 months if you’re an avid runner. I don’t just wear my tennis shoes for working out, but I also wear them to clean and run errands, so they get a lot of miles on them quickly! If you are in need of a new pair of athletic shoes, check out this post.

Makeup and Skincare

In addition to replacing items in my wardrobe, I like to also replace my makeup and skincare products on a yearly basis. Over time, products can become contaminated with bacteria, which can cause breakouts and skin irritations. This includes your makeup sponges, gurls! You can usually give your brushes a deep clean, but don’t be afraid to grab a new set if yours are old and tattered.

Additionally, as your skin changes with age, you may need to switch up your skincare routine to address new concerns like dryness or wrinkles. By replacing your makeup and skincare products yearly, you can ensure that you’re using fresh and effective products that are tailored to your current skin type and needs. Plus, it’s a great excuse to experiment with new products and stay up-to-date with the latest skincare trends!

I loved the picture you painted. I like to color, as I am not good at drawing. Also enjoyed the pic and story about Lucy after her dental surgery. We had to do that with our dog. And I appreciate the Bible verses. Plus your haircut is cute, very becoming to you.

  12. Jane Martin says:

Great list for the new year. Thank you. I always buy several new bras yearly, usually during a sale. I then toss the old bras. They do lose their support.

  13. Laura Crenshaw says:

So anxious to hear what critter made those prints?!?!

    1. Several people had different thoughts. I might never know for sure.

My favorite t-shirts come from LLBean, they have cotton blends that are comfy & hold up well 🙂

    1. LLBean is a great company.

  16. You’ve reminded me to clear out some panties, they’ve been in my closet at least 25 years. oops!
I need tennis shoes, but I don’t like the chunky look that’s everywhere right now. Still looking.

    1. I’ve seen a few sleek ones hitting the stores, so they may be on the horizon.

  17. Susan McMillan says:

    Thanks for all the information!

  18. Thanks for the great tips. My husband is a Wildlife Biologist. He says those are squirrel tracks. They hop when there’s a lot of snow. So no bobcats or Bigfoots. lol

    1. I hope that is what it is. There are a lot of squirrels in the area.

  19. What a great post. I need to take a look at some things and do some replacing!

  20. Why don’t you follow the tracks?! (Yeah, me neither.).
Do you have any BIG neighborhood dogs, like a mastiff?
    Keep your doors locked!!

    1. Lol! No way I’m following the tracks. Lol!

  21. Tracey Morris says:

I love the jeans you wear.

  22. Great reminder post, I do almost the same thing, not great about shoes tho, maybe I should invest in the cheaper ones? You are terrific!! The tracks scare me!!!

  23. Phyllis Martin says:

Thank you for these reminders !

  24. Great post & helpful reminders!

Do you have any recommendations for a cute, lightweight, affordable raincoat?

    Thanks!

    1. Sandy, are you a mind reader? I’m starting research on this right now, and will have a post coming up soon.

      1. So happy to hear this – I just went looking online for a cute raincoat this morning!

  25. Thanks for the best tips to keep us organized! My favorite blog is how to clean out your closet!! Loved!
Check out Innersy underware on amazon. It’s a winner!

  26. Delanie Collings says:

Great tips. By following these suggestions, my closet wouldn’t get so cluttered. That’s a very good thing. Thanks for this very useful post!!

  27. Roberta Schwandner says:

The last several years I have found it difficult to find a good flattering white tee shirt. I find many of them are to see through or very boxy. If I find one that works this year I’m going to buy multiples.

    1. I think I’m going to do a post on white tees since everyone struggles with them.

  28. Great post! Thanks for these reminders! I usually replace my clothing when it is worn but should probably replace some things more often. And I probably need to replace my makeup brushes now!

  29. I just ordered Bombas socks for my husband. Thanks for the review. Website asked how I read of the socks I told them from TS

    1. Lol! I had no idea they asked things like that.

  30. Basic tees are definitely ones that I should replace annually. I should get around to it sooner. They seem to linger far too long.

  31. Very interesting post. Thanks for all the recommendations.

  32. Joannie Russo says:

    Love your advice. Thank you.

  33. Donna Ingalls says:

    Great post.
Yes to replacing socks frequently. I’ve been buying Bombas and loving them.

    1. I hate wearing socks, but I tried Bombas, and I really like those.

  34. So much great information here! Thank you!

  35. Lori Gorenflo says:

Great list of what to replace each year. I am needing to replace quite a few of those items.

  36. Be careful those seem like big prints in the snow. Not sure what it could be. Thanks for the good ideas.

  37. This post is so helpful for me! I forget to replace things and tend to keep things almost indefinitely (I have some things from almost 20 years ago)!

I agree with Joe. looks like a bobcat to me!

  38. Bob cats are not that big, slightly bigger than house cats. If you hear anything that sounds almost like a baby crying it really could be a bob cat!

  39. I’ve been a Warners fan for years! Thanks for the tips

  40. This composite post is appreciated, thank you. I need a few replacements. I’m thinking those pawprints are from a dog-watch out for your cutie pie, Lucy!

  41. Laura Garrett says:

Thank you for introducing me to Madewell tees. I just received the white ones yesterday and they washed up beautifully, are so soft to touch, and held their shape really well. Perfect for spring, underneath a light sweater or jacket. I appreciate you, Tania!

    1. Yay! I’m glad you liked them.

  42. Good reminders – especially the makeup, workout shoes, and bras!

  43. Great post! I usually take stock of these things in January. However, I have white and black t shirts that I have had for years. The only time I replace them is when I have lost weight and need the proper size for my current frame. I buy my t shirts from QVC. I know a lot of folks would never shop there but I have found great products from Isaac Mizrahi – he makes an awesome t shirt in Pima cotton. It not only feels good, but holds its shape, and does not fade. Another product that I can only find on QVC is Susan Graver liquid knit. I swear by this product! It doesn’t wrinkle, it, again, doesn’t shrink, you can spot clean it and it drys quickly. Doesn’t fade and I have some that I have had for years and they look like to day I got them.

  44. Kristin B. says:

Great post. I’m hearing more and more good things about Amazon branded clothing. Tees especially! Thanks for the tips!

  45. Those tracks look like Bunnies! I have them all over my property.

    1. It would be the Easter Bunny then, because these tracks are about 4-6 inches wide.

  46. I desperately need to go through my panties and throw away a lot!! Same for makeup and brushes. Thank you for the reminder.

  47. Thanks for the tips. I don’t wear out my clothes fast because my nicer clothes I never put in the dryer. I’ve had clothes for years that looked new including tshirts. Once I get tired of tshirts I wear them around the house to clean. I was raised in a culture where you only wear your nice clothes to church and out of the house. At home you wear older clothes in case you get dirty. It’s hard to get out of that mindset. That’s why my clothes last so long. I’d like to know why experts say to replace underwear every 6 months. I have so much I don’t even wear every week. I only replace what’s obviously getting worn out. I’m going to look into that sandal. Im having plantar fasciitis issues right now.

  48. Gabrielle says:

I like to replace white t’s too. Are the white ones from Amazon you mention see through? Do you have to wear a nude bra so as not to see it?

    1. The one’s I’ve gotten from Amazon are not see through. But, I always wear nude bras and panties so they don’t show through.

  49. Mary Carol says:

Great suggestions. I wear out tennis shoes more than anything else.
Could those tracks in the snow be from a raccoon? We find possums and raccoons on our back porch during the night all the time trying to eat our cat’s food.

    1. Mary, I have no idea. I’ve not seen any Raccoons, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t around.

  50. Very good suggestions.

  51. Those footprints are scary looking. Be extra careful and alert on your trips outside. Watch out for little Lucy. This is a good reminder for me. I need to refresh my panty drawer.

  52. Jenniffer Groski says:

I will take those tips!!! Thank you Tania!

  53. Kate Chaney says:

    Those are rabbit tracks.

  54. This post has me cleaning out drawers and buying new underwear and bras. I’ve also got some old white t-shirts that must be 8 years old and need to get tossed. Thanks for the tips!

  55. I also replace white tee shirts often- they get so grubby looking! Need to try the Amazon ones. Thanks for this post today as I need to order some tee shirts before warm weather gets here.

  56. Fantastic post today! So helpful. I have saved it and will reference it as I go to replace some items as we head into spring. Thanks!

  57. This post was a great reminder that I need to tidy up a drawer or two! Could you please share the link to your gray hooded sweater? Thank you.

  58. I have been struggling with foot pain (maybe plantar fasciitis) and considering buying Hokas or Brooks to see if they help.

  59. Great reminders Thanks!

  60. This is a great post, thank you for sharing. I try to replace my basics regularly too, but I’m not always good at that. These tips will help as I do some spring cleaning. ❤️ I look forward to to reading this post daily!

  61. Great post! White Tees for sure! I’m kind of a denim hoarder… Happy Wednesday❤❤❤

  62. Linda Shearer says:

This is a great post and alot of good reminders. I have the Amazon Essentials t shirts and love them! I also have the exact bra from warners that you show.

I think jeans are what I replace the most because I wear them the most. I cant find the Joes jeans that you show in my size.

  63. Tania,
Just found you and glad I did! I’m enjoying your pictures, comments, and links too. Thank you for sharing your heart with us.
    God Bless!

    *from another “Tanja”

  64. Great reminder to replace/discard old makeup. Also to clean out underwear drawer. Have a blessed week!

  65. I’m guilty of keeping some things way to long. Thanks for reminding me.

  66. I am in the process of replacing my makeup and am excited to try some of the E.L.F products. Mascara is something I replace about every 6 months. I have read that you could get an eye infection by using old mascara.

  67. Lorelei Almand says:

Totally agree! New foundations for the ups and downs of wardrobe care keep all of our other pieces looking great!

  68. I replace white tees also and thank you for a link on the makeup brushes. I have all mine laid out to deep clean but it’s been a while since a bought new ones. I’ll be placing an order on these today!

  69. Mary Kinard says:

Very helpful! I usually get new white tees every year.

  70. Good post. So true about replacing make up and skin care yearly. My Bombas have lasted forever though.
(I’m no tracker, but the tracks look like they could be a rabbit)

  71. Good reminder for some items. I purchased the bra and really like it…. now for the denim skirt I wanted!

  72. What a great post today. i need to replace many of your suggestions .

  73. I tried the Maybelline Lifter Gloss and I Love it! It’s very hydrating!

  79. Guilty of being lax on a couple items. Better spend time in my closet!!!

  80. Kelly Brooks says:

This has been really helpful. Thanks.

  81. Great post, yes I too replace white tees every year.

  82. Henrietta dotson says:

This has all been so helpful. Thank you ❤️
