7 Summer Fashion Mistakes That Can Make You Look Frumpy After 50
Give me a breezy dress, a cute pair of sandals, and a woven bag, and I am a happy girl. Add a glass of iced tea and a ceiling fan, and I might not move for the rest of the afternoon.
But summer dressing is not always as easy as it looks. Between the heat, the humidity, and trying to stay comfortable without looking frumpy, there are a few little mistakes that can sneak into our wardrobes without us even realizing it.
And trust me, Gurls, I have made plenty of them myself. I have worn the shorts that needed a prayer every time I sat down, the sandals that had seen better decades, and the swimsuit that required more adjusting than a bad Wi-Fi connection.
The good news is that these are easy fixes. You do not have to buy a whole new wardrobe or dress like someone you are not. Sometimes, a few small changes can make your summer outfits look fresher, more flattering, and a whole lot more comfortable.
1. Wearing Clothes That Don’t Fit Your Body Today

I think we have all been guilty of this at some point. Maybe it is a pair of shorts that technically still buttons, but only if you do not plan on breathing deeply. Maybe it is a sundress that has been hanging in the closet waiting for you to lose ten pounds. Or maybe you have gone the opposite direction and started buying everything oversized because you do not want anything touching your body.
The truth is, clothes that are too tight tend to highlight every lump, bump, and line we are trying to minimize. But clothes that are too big are not always the answer either. Instead of hiding your body, they can make you look larger, shapeless, and less put-together than you actually are.
This is one of those lessons I have had to learn more than once. Our bodies change, and that does not mean anything has gone wrong. It just means we need to dress the body we have today instead of the one we had ten years ago or the one we are hoping to have by Labor Day.

Forget the size on the tag and focus on the fit. Nobody sees the number except you.
If something feels uncomfortable every time you wear it, stop trying to make it work. Donate it and move on. There are too many cute summer clothes available to spend another season squeezing into things that do not fit or hiding under clothes that are two sizes too big.
Look for pieces that skim your body instead of clinging to it. A dress with a little shape, a top that fits through the shoulders, or pants that do not pull across the hips can instantly make you look more polished and confident.
When your clothes fit properly, you automatically look more comfortable. And comfortable usually looks younger, fresher, and a whole lot happier.
2. Wearing a Swimsuit That’s Too Small or Too Revealing

A swimsuit should not require constant supervision. If you are worried about falling out of the top every time you bend over, holding your breath to get it zipped, or wondering if the people behind you are getting a little more view than they bargained for, the suit is no longer doing its job.
I know swimsuits can be one of the hardest things to shop for, especially after 50. We want coverage, support, comfort, and a little bit of style. Apparently, we are not asking for much, just a miracle with adjustable straps. Lol.
But the right swimsuit really can make a difference. It should make you feel secure enough to walk to the pool, play with the grandkids, sit in a beach chair, and actually enjoy yourself without tugging and adjusting every five minutes.
Easy Fix
If your swimsuit is digging, pulling, stretching, or making you feel self-conscious, give yourself permission to buy a new one.
There are so many great swimsuits available now at every price point, from affordable Amazon finds to brands like Lands’ End, Tommy Bahama, and Miraclesuit. Look for features like tummy control, adjustable straps, built-in cups, ruching, higher-waisted bottoms, and tops that actually support instead of just pretending to.
A tankini can be a great option if you like the look of a two-piece but want more coverage. A one-piece with ruching can be very flattering, and swim dresses or skirted bottoms are wonderful if you want a little extra coverage around the hips and thighs.

3. Wearing White Without the Right Undergarments
White jeans, white pants, and white dresses are summer staples for a reason. They are fresh, classic, and perfect for hot weather. I love wearing white in the summer because it makes everything look clean and crisp.
Unfortunately, white is also one of the easiest places to make a fashion mistake.
Many women assume white underwear belongs under white clothing, but that is actually one of the biggest mistakes you can make. White undergarments usually show through white fabric more than nude undergarments do.
And Gurls, there are some things we do not need to share with the general public. The nice man in aisle three at the grocery store does not need that kind of information.
Easy Fix
Choose undergarments that match your skin tone as closely as possible instead of choosing white.
Before leaving the house, step into natural light or take a quick photo with your phone to make sure everything stays covered. Indoor lighting can lie to you. Natural light tells the truth, sometimes a little too enthusiastically.
Also, pay attention to fabric thickness. Some white pants are simply too thin, no matter what you wear underneath. If the pockets show clearly through the front, that is usually a sign that the fabric may not be substantial enough.

Finding shorts that fit well can feel like a full-time job after 50. One of the biggest mistakes I see is wearing shorts that seem fine when you are standing still, but start riding up the second you begin walking.
This usually happens when shorts are too tight through the hips or thighs, even if the waistband fits perfectly. It can also happen when the inseam is simply too short for your body shape and comfort level.
And let’s be honest, if you spend the whole day pulling your shorts down, they are not the shorts for you. You should be able to walk, sit, bend, and live your life without fighting your clothes.
Easy Fix
Look for shorts with a little more room through the leg, and do not get too hung up on the size number. A slightly longer inseam or a relaxed fit often solves the problem immediately.
For many women over 50, a 5-inch, 7-inch, or 9-inch inseam can feel more comfortable than a very short pair. Bermuda shorts are also a great option if you like extra coverage, but be careful with length. If they hit at the widest part of your knee or calf, they can sometimes make your legs look shorter.

5. Summer Sandal Mistakes That Can Age Your Outfit

Can we have a little heart-to-heart about summer sandals? I know it is hard to let go of a comfortable pair, but worn-out sandals can instantly make an outfit look dated.
If the footbed is flattened, the straps are stretched out, or the soles are noticeably worn, it might be time for a replacement.
I am not saying you have to toss every old pair, but sometimes we get so used to wearing the same sandals that we stop noticing what they actually look like. Then one day, we catch a glimpse of them in a photo and realize they have been through more than we have.
Easy Fix
Take a close look at your favorite sandals before summer starts. If they are looking tired, replace them with a fresh pair.
You do not need a closet full of sandals. A few good pairs can carry you through most of summer. I like having a comfortable walking sandal, a neutral dressier sandal, and a casual everyday pair that works with shorts, dresses, and jeans.
Support matters too, especially if you have bunions, plantar fasciitis, arch issues, or feet that no longer enjoy suffering for fashion. A cute sandal is nice, but a cute sandal you can actually walk in is even better.

6. Wearing Only Dark Colors During Summer

I love black as much as the next girl, but wearing dark colors from head to toe all summer can feel heavy, especially when the temperatures start climbing.
Dark colors can look chic, but in the middle of July, they can also feel hot and a little harsh. Summer is the perfect time to lighten things up with white, cream, soft blue, green, coral, pink, or fun prints.
That does not mean you have to dress like a box of crayons. A little color goes a long way.
Easy Fix
Try adding lighter colors, colorful accessories, or seasonal prints into your wardrobe. You do not have to give up black completely. Simply mixing it with white, cream, blue, green, or pink can make it feel much more summer-friendly.
If you love wearing black, try pairing a black tank with white linen pants, a black dress with raffia sandals, or black shorts with a colorful top. Accessories help too. A woven bag, gold jewelry, a straw hat, or a lighter sandal can make a darker outfit feel more seasonal.

7. Wearing Athleisure Instead of Real Outfits All Summer

Listen, I love comfortable clothes as much as anyone. Athleisure has definitely earned a place in my closet. Leggings, athletic shorts, and performance tops are perfect for workouts, walks, travel days, and running errands.
The problem comes when workout clothes become the default outfit for every single activity.
If you are reaching for the same leggings or athletic shorts every day, your summer wardrobe can start to feel repetitive. And sometimes, without meaning to, we can start looking like we are always on our way to exercise, even when the only workout planned is lifting a fork at lunch.
Easy Fix
Keep a few easy summer outfits on hand that are just as comfortable as athleisure but look more pulled together.
A casual dress, a matching set, linen pants, relaxed shorts with a cute top, or a simple maxi dress can feel just as easy. The trick is to find pieces that do not require a lot of thought.
One-and-done dresses are my favorite for this. You put on the dress, add sandals and earrings, and you are finished. No waistband digging in, no layers sticking to you, and no wondering if the top and bottom work together.
Comfort does not have to mean sloppy. You can be cool, comfortable, and still look like you meant to get dressed.

🙂 These are all such great suggestions. I really need to get out of wearing yoga pants all the time. I haven’t exercised in them in a long time, yet that’s just about all I wear. I’m just not really a dress person, so though they look great on other women, they are just not for me. I have been trying to buy more light colored tops for a more summery look but unfortunately, I’m still wearing them with fitness capris. At least they are in a nicer variety of colors and not just black. I’m definitely a work in progress.
