The Best Length for Shorts Over 50: Finding a Flattering Fit
Let’s talk about shorts, gurls! Yep, we’re going there. I know shorts can be a bit of a sore subject for many of us over 50, but I’m here to say that you absolutely can wear them (and wear them well!). You don’t have to give up comfort just because the birthdays keep coming. The key is finding the right shorts that flatter your shape, feel comfortable, and help you walk out that door with confidence.
Today, we’re going to talk all about the best length for shorts over 50. We’ll go over inseam lengths, styles that work, and how to pick a pair that makes you feel like a million bucks. Because, let’s face it, if you’re constantly tugging at your hem or worried about showing too much skin, you’re not going to enjoy your day. Life is too short for that, so let’s chat about how you can find the most flattering pair of shorts for your body!
Why Shorts Are Tricky After 50 (But Don’t Have to Be)
Our bodies change over time. Gravity happens. Life happens. And all of that is perfectly normal. But it can make shopping for shorts a little more… complicated. What worked in our 30s might not work anymore, and that’s okay.
A lot of women tell me they’ve just sworn off shorts entirely, but I say don’t give up on them so fast. You just need to find styles that work with your current shape, not against it. And that starts with the length.

What’s the Best Inseam Length for Women Over 50?
Shorts come in all different lengths, from teeny-tiny cutoffs to Bermuda styles that go past the knee. Somewhere in the middle is the sweet spot for most women over 50.
Here’s a breakdown of common inseam lengths and how to decide which one’s right for you:
3- to 4-Inch Inseam
This is what I call the “short short.” If you’ve got great legs and you’re confident about showing them off, this length can still work! But for most women over 50, this can feel a little too revealing. It also tends to ride up, and nobody has time for that. I usually skip this length unless I’m wearing them as swim coverups or beachwear.
I do find a lot of athletic shorts fall into this inseam range! You can find some of my favorite athletic shorts (including some longer options) in this post.
5- to 7-Inch Inseam
This length is the Goldilocks zone. A 5- or 6-inch inseam is short enough to show some leg but long enough to cover the upper thigh, which is where most of us feel self-conscious. A 7-inch inseam provides a bit more coverage while still keeping things casual and cool.
If you’re new to shorts or feel hesitant about wearing them, this is the length I’d recommend starting with. You’ll feel polished but not matronly—and that’s the goal, right?
Some of My Favorite 5- to 7-Inch Inseam Shorts:
It is that time of year! The time when we allow our pasty white legs to once again see the sunshine. Lol! I just got in the Waterford 4.5″ Walking Short by Frank & Eileen. These shorts are much more expensive than the clothing I’ve been styling, but I like mixing my price points to create interesting outfits. You can get 15% off the F&E website with the code LOVE.
These shorts are a game-changer if you like a little extra tummy support without feeling squeezed in. Whether you’re running errands or heading to lunch with friends, these shorts keep you feeling good and looking polished. You can also grab them in khaki or olive green!
If you love a good pair of denim shorts, these from Talbots are a solid pick! The patch pockets give them a fun, vintage feel, and the medium wash has that perfect lived-in look. They’re not too short, not too long—just right for feeling stylish but still covered!
These cuffed shorts have an effortless, laid-back vibe that’s perfect for warm days! The relaxed fit means they’re not clinging to your legs, and NYDJ’s signature “Lift Tuck technology” gives a little extra confidence boost. Throw them on with a tee and sandals, and you’re good to go!
Isn’t this pink color fun? These “Perfect Shorts” hit just above the knee, so you get good coverage without feeling frumpy. They’re perfect for casual outings, and the tailored fit makes them easy to dress up a bit if needed.
A true summer staple! These chino shorts go with everything. Dress them up with a blouse or keep it casual with a tank and sneakers. You might even want them in more than one color!
9- to 11-Inch Inseam (Bermuda Shorts)
These 9″ shorts are a perfect length! These shorts look great, and I like them so much that I also have them in hot pink and white. They will go with anything this summer, and I paired them with a navy & white Striped Puff-Sleeve Ruffle-Collar Top.
These are the long-line shorts that typically hit right above or at the knee. If you like coverage, they’re a solid choice. The trick here is all about the cut. Look for slim or straight-leg Bermudas that skim the thigh instead of flaring out. Otherwise, they can make your legs look wider than they are.
Cuffed styles and a little stretch in the fabric can help these feel more modern and less “grandma on vacation”—unless that’s the look you’re going for, in which case, you do you!
I share some great pairs of Bermuda shorts over in this post, but I’m also sharing some of my favorites below.
Some of My Favorite Bermuda Shorts:
Easy, comfy, and practically stain-proof? Yes, please! These pull-on denim shorts are perfect for days when you want to look put-together without dealing with buttons or zippers. Plus, the no-stain technology means spills don’t stand a chance—perfect for coffee runs or summer BBQs!
If you love a little extra coverage but still want a flattering fit, these Bermuda shorts are a great option. They have NYDJ’s signature slimming panel to smooth things out and a longer length that keeps you covered without looking too boxy. A go-to for vacation, errands, or just an easy everyday look.
These Brigitte shorts are one of the first pairs of Bermuda shorts I owned! The stretch fabric makes them super comfortable, and the pull-on style means no fussing with buttons. They’re polished enough to dress up with a cute blouse but just as easy to pair with a tee and sandals.
Linen shorts that are lined? A dream come true! These have a relaxed fit with just enough structure from the pleats to make them feel polished. Whether you’re strolling through a farmers’ market or heading to brunch, these will keep you cool and looking effortlessly chic!
The Magic of Fit: It’s Not Just About Length
Length matters, but so does fit. Even the perfect inseam won’t work if the waist digs in or the thighs feel too tight.
Here are a few things to look for:
- Mid-rise or high-rise styles give your tummy a little support and help avoid the dreaded muffin top.
- Flat front shorts tend to be more flattering than pleats, which can add volume.
- A little stretch goes a long way. Look for shorts with at least 2-3% spandex or elastane for comfort and ease of movement.
- Pockets that lie flat—bulky pockets can add bulk in places we don’t want it.
How to Try Shorts On (Without Losing Your Mind)
Trying on shorts in a fitting room is enough to test anyone’s patience. I always recommend bringing multiple sizes into the dressing room, even if you think you know your size. Shorts can vary wildly from brand to brand.
Try them on and do a little test walk around. Sit down. Bend over. If they ride up or you feel the need to adjust constantly, put them back on the rack.
You want a pair that stays put and moves with you. Comfort is queen.
My Go-To Shorts Brands for Women Over 50
I’ve tried a lot of shorts over the years. Here are a few brands I know that I can consistently turn to when I need to find a flattering, age-appropriate style:
- J.Crew – Their 5″ and 7″ chino shorts are classics for a reason.
- Talbots – A great source for Bermuda shorts with a tailored feel.
- Old Navy – Surprisingly good for budget-friendly options with stretch.
- NYDJ (Not Your Daughter’s Jeans) – Known for their slimming fit and higher rise.
- Loft – They always have cute patterns and breezy fabrics for summer.

1 Corinthians 3:16 (NIV)
16 Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst?
Where can I find the floral, sleeveless blouse you have on with white shorts on your April 10, 2025 posting?
Thank you.
That was a shirt I bought several years ago. It came from Kohls.
😊
I will give wearing shorts another shot! I love the idea of stretch linen!
FOUND IT
😊 I love the v-neck cable knit sweater with the white walking shorts! I haven’t been wearing shorts, but I am thinking I might buy a new pair. (long ones) Thank you for the great posts.
🙂 I like the 5-7 inch walking shorts, that’s a great length
🙂 I don’t wear shorts out of the house anymore. These legs just don’t need to be seen.
I like many of your choices! I wish I could still wear shorts but I cannot stand the veins on my legs.
🙂I have several NYDJ Bermuda shorts that I roll into a cuff depending how short I want to go that day.
🙂
Nice article.
🙂 Love shorts for the summer. Talbots ones are great for petites and last.
🙂 Did you know that at the bottom of your posts in the “IN CASE YOU MISSED IT *click the posts” section, when you click the photos, there is no link attached/behind it?
Are you touching, or clicking on the photo of the post you missed? They all open for me.
Thanks for sharing a variety of styles to choose from 🙂
😀
Love the 1st pic with the khaki shorts with crisp white blouse. Just gorgeous. You have such a great figure.. I’m 5ft tall and gain weight just looking at a bag of Oreos 😞
Julie, since I’ve been eating Carnivore, I rarely crave sweets. When I do, I eat something small, but try not to bring it into the house.
😊. I agree that 7” does make me feel more confident but I sure miss my short-short days!
🙂
All nice shirts. The 4.5 ” F and E shorts look much longer on you than the model.
The legs might be longer than mine, Lol!
I love the first outfit. Looks great on you.
Found it!
😊
You look fabulous in shorts!
I do not have attractive legs so denim jeans is what I wear.
😊 love the linen shorts!
You have great legs for shorts! Unfortunately I don’t and I stick to pants.
🙂
Thanks for the tips on short styles. My legs are so bad, that I haven’t worn shorts in years, except when going to the beach!
found it
5-7″ shorts for me!
😀 I like the 5-7 inseam.
🙂 my favorite are 5 to 7 inch slim fit denim
😀 I like all the shorts options and you look great in the outfits you modeled! I have cellulite all over my thighs and am really self-conscious about it. I usually resort to wearing the longer ones or crops.
🙂 My legs are showing my age but I wear shorts anyway. Thank goodness for self tanner, besides it’s hot in the summer.
🙂 found it ! Love the navy short with the navy and white stripe blouse.
I mostly wear the Bermuda length. I like them because I can shop, eat out for early day times, or just stay home.
Found it. I love the black and white polo sweater. Looks great with shorts and so many other things. I’m a Bermuda shorts fan.
☺️
Love the loft twill shorts. The slightly shorter look better on me! Short person with shorter legs 🫣
😀Thanks for bringing NYDJ linen shorts back on my radar. I owned a pair of these shorts years ago.
🙂Bermuda shorts are the length I feel most comfortable wearing when I’m out and about.
🙂 The Talbots perfect 7″ short may be a try for me. I don’t like tugging and pulling.
😊
Shorts are a must for me in the heat of summer. You look great in them.
😊Thanks for sharing the different styles of shorts!
I need to try the loft palmer shorts. 🙂 Found it.
🙂cute selections. Lucy Lu has mastered how to photo-bomb!
😊Love all the guidance on length and cut.
🙂 I have enjoyed wearing Talbots 10″ for the last few years. I’ll have to try a couple of others though!
🙂 Yep the short season is coming. I like the 7-9 inch, I’m 74 and my legs look OK I’m not 25 years old anymore.
😊Your little dog’s face is so cute in the first photo. It would have been a cute place for the smiley face. I have two shorts like the Frank and Eileen ones. They’re more loose and cool for the summer. My legs are getting worse the older I get so it’s going to have to be really hot for me to wear shorts and forget my vanity. It’s those veins and I have thin skin literally.
😀. What breed is Pepper? That’s such a cute picture of her! I hope that you have a wonderful weekend with the family. I don’t mind wearing shorts out and about, however my legs have so many fresh and lingering bruises on them, along with a few ugly veins, that I am self conscious about. Self tanners & I just don’t play well together. In my head I do hear you telling us that people are not going to notice or focus on the things we don’t like, so don’t let that keep me from wearing shorts or short dresses. The Kim Rogers brand at Belk also has nice options for us that don’t break the bank. Please keep encouraging us not to hide!
You might recognize Pepper… she is a Golden Doodle.
😊You look great in any length of short!
😊 such a cute pup! Love a 5 inch short too!
😊 good selectio
The black sweater and white shorts is a very classic look. no
🙂 I have the J Crew Factory shorts – they are perfect!
Love the 7 inch shorts 😃
😊The NYDJ stretch linen bermudas look great!
just ordered the NYJD Bermuda shorts. I’m also considering the J Crew shorts in the Dusty Red.
it’s still cold in Mass, but spring will come someday!
🙂love the post! Love the photo bomber in the first pic!
😄. As I have aged, I mostly wear Bermuda shorts if I am going out anywhere.
Tania, what do you think about skorts?
Love them! I’ll have a post on them soon.
🙂 5″ is my sweet spot for shorts.
🙂 found it
Thank you for the options you provided with shorts, I like the 4.5 length myself.
😀 Agree the Talbots Patch Pocket is a great choice for denim!! Also, ❤️ your photo-bomber in your first pic! 🐶
🙂 Cute.
🙂 At my age, I have to stick to capris. But,you look amazing in shorts Tania!
🙂 I like the beige linen blend shorts.
Found it😀. The 5-7 inch shorts are my sweet spot. Always a challenge to find ones that fit perfectly!
🙂 I have been wearing capris vs shorts for years. The capris were not flattering but I live in the South and it’s hot! This year I tried Talbots Perfect Shorts that hit at the knee. They are much more flattering than capris and cooler too! I ordered several pairs.
😊Found it! I really like all the options you showed for Bermuda shorts. I prefer the longer 7” length for me.
🙂 Talbots shorts are so comfortable!
😊 These are all nice options for shorts! You look nice in all the outfits you modeled. I have cellulite on my thighs and am so self-conscious about it. I usually wear the longer shorts or crops. I just started using a cellulite smoothing oil, don’t know if it will work or not. I’m going to use it for a while and see.
Love this post! Shorts are very difficult to find the right fit for me. I’m a shorty at 5 ft. Where did u find the bag in the Khaki Bermuda short pic?
🙂
It is one I bought from Anthropologie, but they don’t carry it anymore.
😊 I wear shorts frequently during the summer and have trouble finding them in store in that 5 – 7 inch length, which is perfect for me (actually 6 inches is perfect). When that length is available, I usually buy two or three pair in different colors.
🙂 I love shorts but just not on me unless they cover my knees. Thank you for the ideas 🙂
🙂 Lots of good information if you going to wear shorts.
Found it:) great post on shorts- I like almost all except the shortest. I will never give up wearing shorts!
🙂 Chino shorts are my go-to.
I find as a petite that 5″ is my sweet spot for shorts hem. Longer than that looks disproportionate, and shorter than that looks yikes. 🙂 I love Talbots for shorts, that is where most of mine are from.
😊The older we get, the longer the shorts.
🙂 I wear skorts more than shorts. I just feel they fit my current shape better.
🙂 I like my shorts to be at least 9 inches long
🙂 found it
🙂 found it! I really love the white shorts from kohl’s. I think that would be a perfect length for me.
🙂 Bermuda for me. Especially like this length to dress up with a jacket.
🙂
5-7 inch inseam is my favorite. Anything shorter and I feel like my legs are too exposed. Longer and it feels odd.
Found it. 😊 Many good options. Like the lined linen shorts.
In Florida’s heat, shorts are a must. Nice to have the Bermudas
for going out. Pepper is adorable. Thanks for that picture. Enjoy
the game. I was at my grandson’s game last night. He will be so happy
that you are there. 😊⚾️
🙂 thank you for the shorts ideas! I live in Phoenix so shorts are definitely a staple. I find at 5’4” 145 pounds, with a thicker thigh, that a 7” wide leg looks best on me. Not sure why I never think about checking out Old Navy. Thanks for the reminder!
🙂 OK, you have convinced me to give shorts another try. I am a bit self conscience about the spider veins on my legs. I do have one pair that I will wear around the house or in the yard but the thought of wearing them out in public is horrifying. I will also try some leg make-up to lighten the veins. Thanks for your inspiration.
The only smiley face I found was sweet, little Lucy Lu’s peaking out behind you in the first photo. What a cutie! Love the 7″ shorts!
😉 I no longer wear shorts, except while working in the yard. But gurl, you look great.
I loved the comment “gravity is real.” I told that to a young friend when she showed me her tattoo of a long stemmed rose on her breast. I said it would one day turn into a hanging basket.
LOL!!!!
🙂 Love Chicos’ bermuda shorts.
😊 I am more of a Bermuda shorts gal.
😊 Any suggestions for the best length for a petite – I feel some of the longer ones make me look frumpy but too old for short short!
Joan, you have to wear what makes you comfortable. I would suggest a 5″ – 7″, and probably a pair that is slim, not too wide.
😊 When in doubt always go classic!
🙂 Found it
Found it! the 7 inch is my favorite length. It’s comfy and stylish.
🙂 I have a hard time shopping for shorts I like but I have some LL Bean and J Crew shorts that work well for me.
😀 great insight. I love wit and wisdom- have several pay
😊 I like shorts that are just above the knees. I would love to try the lined linen shorts.
🙂 Found it! Love striped tops with white shorts, and the pink shorts with the floral button up, so ready for warm weather. Have a blessed week!
found it
Found it 🙂 I don’t know why women over 50 feel like they can’t wear shorts. I wear them all the time and I’m 63. The 5-7 inch length is definitely my favorite – not too long not too short. I really like the Wit and Wisdom and denim pair from Talbots. 😊
😉
Loved how LuLu photobombed your photo.
What breed of dog does your brother have?
I saw her peaking out in the photo! Pepper is a Golden Doodle that has had a hair cut.
😁 I’m short so Bermuda shorts are tricky for me. I love Loft shorts!
😀 Love this post. My go to outfits for summer are skorts and tops but I’m ready to up my options this year. I am going to put on my big girl panties and hit the fitting rooms😃
🙂 Love the patch pocket denim shorts from Talbots but the rise looks high waisted. My waist is almost the same size as my hips , so mid rise fits me best. Love this post as I tend to avoid shorts🤣
Nice choices. I found a more narrow fit in shorts seems to help in a longer lengths.
🙂
🙂 Found it. The pink shorts are so pretty, that is my preferred length aging has not been my friend with the gravity and crepey skin factor.
Thanks!
I love the Bermuda stretch shorts. 🙂 the hot pink and flowered shirt is so cute!
😊thanks for sharing. Shorts season is approaching!
:)) Here in hot, humid Florida shorts are a must!!! 5-7 ” are the best length for me.
😊 Bermuda length is my preference. My legs aren’t what they used to be, but I prefer the Bermuda length.
🙂 Any link to the first sleeveless floral top?
No, it is several years old. It came from J.Crew Factory.
Pepper is adorable! I know longer wear shorts other than around the house. I love wide leg linen pants as my shorts replacement! 💗
🙂 I usually wear 5in shorts since I’m only 5’2″
🤗 I prefer the longer shorts too
Did not find a :), but had to comment. I currently love the look and fit of the 5-7″ short. I really like bermuda’s on others, but on 5′ 3 1/2″ – even though I have a 31″ inseam, they just make me look 3″ shorter and 20# heavier, so while I buy a pair each summer, I donate them at the end of the year, because -they don’t work. But love the shorts, both 5 – 7 and the bermuda’s on you, they are flattering, and stylish!
😀 My favorite is Chico’s short!
🙂 I find Bermuda shorts most comfortable at this stage of my life, but more often reach for a skort instead, finding them cooler and less constricting.
found it 🙂 I love the 9-10 inch shorts, I have long legs so they work for me.
🙂
Good to know that various lengths seem to be in style.
I usually prefer slimmer short styles that are maybe 3-4 inches above my knee because of my height/weight. 🙂
Although, I also like some with a bit shorter inseam and a little wider leg opening too. Guess it depends on my mood?? 😉
A lot of it depends on my mood, too.
Found it!
Shorts can be very frustrating to shop for. Thank you for the wide range of options.
😊I still wear shorts. The Talbots and J. Crew styles are my favorite.
😊 I am petite but still want a 6 or 7 inch inseam. I have some old Loft shorts that are that length. They seem to have went to “short shorts” now. Wish those front patch pocket shorts were longer! Enjoy your family weekend!
😊
I love those bright pink shorts!! I stick with skimmers or capris due to the chubbiness on the inside of my knees.
🙂 Love the different styles of shorts. The way you style them proves they can look chic!
🙂 loved it!
I love the look and ease of a mid length khaki short. My problem is that what starts out as looking crisp and “put together” often ends up looking wrinkled and sloppy. Are you aware of any nonwrinkle shorts that are stylish (not athletic)? Thanks for all your posts!
Look forward to shorts weather! Very helpful information. 🙂 found it!
Look forward to shorts weather! Very helpful information. 🙂 found it!
I love Bermuda shorts. I have long, bony legs- chicken legs, so I like to hide them, but I live in SC, so need to be cool…..Lol!
😊 I prefer the 9-11 “ length. Pepper is adorable!! Enjoy watching your grandsons game!
🙂 I struggle with shorts. I would love to wear the longer ones, but being short they make me look even shorter and they accentuate y knee replacement scares. Short ones ugh…
found it!
I prefer the Bermuda shorts, can’t stand any that ride up between the legs!
🙂 I rarely wear shorts unless I am walking and no one can see me except from a distance. I am not fond of how my legs look at this time. I do use Jergen’s self tanner which does help. Thanks for the post.
Found it:) I don’t know why women over 50 feel like they can’t wear shorts. I wear them all the time and I’m 63. The 5-7 inch length is definitely my favorite-not too short not too long. I really like the Wit and Wisdom and denim pair from Talbots.
Laura, I think it is because they are subconscious of their legs, and don’t want others looking at them.
☺️ The 7-9” inseam works best for me.
😊 Do you happen to have the link for the sleeveless floral top you are wearing with the white shorts? I love that top!
No, it was from J.Crew Factory, and is several years old.
Great post, love the sharp looking outfit white shorts and black sweater.
😊Found it. I like the 9-10″ shorts. They just look classier to me.
😊
I prefer the, what I’ve always called walking shorts, length. Frank and Eileen are calling them golf shorts in the picture you showed with you wearing the black polo. style sweater. The length is 7.5.
The F&E shorts aren’t that long.
: )
this is valuable inseam length information! very helpful when ordering online
😀that pup looks like he will not give up the lookout!
She is a sweetie!
Thank you! Love your blogs, please sign me up for your Amazon drawing. Thanks so much! I typically don’t wear shorts unless I’m at home cleaning. Yvonne
Commenting gets you signed up. Good luck, you never know who will win!
Shorts length can be tricky…I don’t want to look matronly or tacky!
Found it!
What a variety of shorts!
Great suggestion about taking several sizes to the dressing room to try on. I have to get over the mental block that I’m not a medium in all brands or styles.
😀 The JCrew Frankie short flattering , especially as they are more tapered.
😊
I prefer the 7-9 inch shorts. Lee is a great brand for a tailored look.
😀didn’t find it, & all nice shorts & dog👍
I really like the 7″ shorts, but I also love the info for fit. I’m going to try high waist. I tend to carry weight in myid section. I’m eating lots of salad, drinking gallons of water. Thank you so much.
I’m so ready for shorts weather! Really liked Talbots denim ones🙂
this is so true after 50 gravity starts to set in and longer shorts look so much better.
