Tommy Bahama Vacation Outfits for Women Over 50 That Look Polished and Feel Easy
Vacation packing sounds fun until you are standing there trying to figure out what works for dinner, sightseeing, travel days, chilly restaurants, warm afternoons, and the occasional moment when you just want to look nice without overthinking it. That is when I start tossing things on the bed like I am preparing for a two-month European tour instead of a long weekend.
Tommy Bahama is one of those brands that makes summer dressing feel a little more relaxed, but still polished. It has that easy vacation feel without looking sloppy, and that is exactly what I want when I am packing. I don’t want anything too tight, too short, too fussy, or too young. I want clothes that feel comfortable, look pretty, and can be worn more than one way.
Today I’m sharing a few Tommy Bahama outfits that would work beautifully for vacation, summer dinners, casual days, patio lunches, or any warm-weather trip where you want to look pulled together without packing half your closet. Joe would probably say I still pack half my closet, but we are not asking him. Lol!
Why Tommy Bahama Works So Well for Vacation Outfits
Tommy Bahama does resort style really well. The pieces usually have that relaxed, tropical, warm-weather look, but they still feel elevated enough for dinner or a nicer outing. That is important, especially when you are packing and need items that can do more than one thing.
For women over 50, I think the best vacation outfits usually have a few things in common. They are comfortable; they skim instead of cling; they work with neutral shoes and bags; and they can be layered if you end up in one of those restaurants where the air conditioning is set somewhere between “meat locker” and “Arctic expedition.”
These outfits also mix dressier pieces with casual accessories, which is one of my favorite ways to make vacation dressing easier. A good dress, a lightweight jacket, comfortable sandals, and a few neutral accessories can cover a lot of ground.
A Black Summer Dress That Works Two Ways
This black sleeveless dress is one of those pieces that immediately made me think, “This would be easy to pack.” A black dress is always a smart travel piece because you can change the look completely with accessories. In the first outfit, I styled it with a straw hat, raffia clutch, and black wedge sandals. This version feels like a vacation dinner, a resort evening, or a summer event where you want to look polished but not overdressed.
I love the contrast stitching because it gives the dress some shape and interest. A plain black dress can sometimes fall flat, especially in photos, but the stitching helps define the lines and gives the outfit a more finished look. The sleeveless style keeps it cool, and the length is nice without feeling too short.
Sizing note, I ordered my usual size 12, but this dress runs a little big on me. I could have worn a 10 and probably would have liked the fit better. If you are between sizes, I would consider sizing down.
This is the kind of dress I would pack first because it can work for several occasions. Add the hat and clutch, and it feels vacation-ready. Add a jacket and a tote, and suddenly it looks like a completely different outfit. That is the kind of math I actually enjoy.
The Same Black Dress With a Linen Jacket
Here is the same black dress styled a second way, and this is why I love a versatile dress. Adding the white linen jacket changes the whole feel of the outfit. It looks a little more polished, a little more city-ready, and definitely more practical for travel days or cool indoor spaces.
A light jacket is one of those pieces I almost always want with me, even in the summer. I can be perfectly fine outside, then walk into a restaurant and start looking around for a tablecloth to wrap around my shoulders. A white linen jacket is a much better option, and it makes the black dress feel brighter and more daytime-friendly.
Sizing note: the linen jacket also seems to run slightly big. I ordered my usual size, but I think I could have sized down in this one, too. It still works, especially if you want room through the shoulders or plan to wear it over other tops, but I would keep that in mind when ordering.
I styled this look with a brown handbag and brown sandals, which softens the black and white combination. Black accessories would work too, but the brown gives it a warmer summer feel.
A Striped Wrap Dress That Feels Feminine Without Being Too Fussy
This blue and white striped wrap dress is such a pretty vacation option. It has that breezy summer feel, but the shape keeps it from looking too casual. I love a V-neckline because it is flattering, and the wrap style gives definition through the waist without feeling stiff.
The ruffle detail adds movement, and the midi length gives nice coverage while still feeling light. This would be beautiful for a beach dinner, a summer party, a cruise, or even church with the right jacket or wrap. It has that “I made an effort” look without needing a lot of extras.
Sizing note, this one fit slightly tight through the chest on me. There is a hook and eye at the V-neck, but I did not use it because it felt better open. If you are larger through the bust, you may want to keep that in mind. The rest of the dress looked nice, but the chest area was the one place I noticed the fit.
I styled it with a raffia clutch and jewelry, which keep everything easy and warm-weather appropriate. The stripes add plenty of visual interest, but I never leave the house without my jewelry.
A Casual Shorts Outfit for Warm Vacation Days
Not every vacation outfit needs to be a dress. Some days call for shorts, sandals, and a top that looks better than a basic tee. This outfit is casual, but it still feels pulled together, which is exactly what I want for sightseeing, lunch, shopping, or a warm day of running around.
The linen button-up shirt has an easy, relaxed feel, and I like that it gives a little more polish than a T-shirt. The neutral color makes it easy to pair with black shorts, white shorts, denim, or even linen pants. It is one of those tops that can do a lot of work in a suitcase.
I ordered a large in the shirt, which is what I usually order in button-up shirts, because I do not want the buttons to gap open. I probably could have worn a medium, but I do not like to chance it with button-front tops. A little extra room through the chest makes the shirt more comfortable and less fussy, and I would rather have that than be tugging at buttons all day.
For the shorts, I ordered both an 8 and a 10, and I decided to keep the 8s. They fit better and still felt comfortable. The black color makes them easy to style, and they balance nicely with the softer neutral top. I added light neutral sandals and a black crossbody, which keeps the outfit practical for a casual day out.
This is the outfit I would wear when I want to be comfortable but still look like I did not just throw on the first thing I found. Although let’s be honest, sometimes that is exactly what happens. We just prefer it not to look that way.
What to Pack With Tommy Bahama Vacation Outfits
If you are trying to keep vacation packing simple, I would start with a few pieces that work with more than one outfit. You do not need a different shoe, bag, and jacket for every single look. That is how the suitcase gets heavy, and Joe starts giving me that look over the top of the luggage scale.
A few good add-ons can stretch your outfits a long way. A straw hat makes a simple dress feel more vacation-ready. A raffia clutch works with dresses, linen, and resort outfits. A white linen jacket gives coverage and warmth without looking heavy. Brown or nude sandals are easy to wear with almost anything. A black crossbody is great for casual days when you want your hands free.
This is also where jewelry can help. A few gold necklaces, bracelets, or statement earrings can make a simple outfit feel intentional without taking up much space in your suitcase.
A Few More Tommy Bahama Pieces I Have On Order
I also have a few more Tommy Bahama items on order that I think could work well with these outfits or as additional vacation pieces. Once they arrive, I will be able to see the fit and quality in person, which always makes a difference.
I am especially interested in pieces that can be mixed into this same vacation capsule idea. Dresses that work for dinner, lightweight layers for cool evenings, easy tops, and pieces that can be worn with neutral sandals and bags are always the most useful. Pretty is wonderful, but useful and pretty is where the magic happens.
One Last Thing
Vacation outfits do not need to be complicated. A few easy pieces can take you from travel day to dinner to sightseeing without needing to pack your entire closet. A good black dress, a lightweight jacket, a flattering wrap dress, and a casual shorts outfit can cover a lot of summer plans.
That is why I like this Tommy Bahama mix. The pieces feel relaxed but still polished, and they have that vacation feel without looking like you are trying too hard. At this stage of life, I want clothes that make getting dressed easier, not clothes that require a committee meeting.
And if you see me packing three extra pairs of shoes anyway, just look the other way. Joe already has that department covered.
