The Best Supportive Sandals for Women with Bunions or Plantar Fasciitis

If you have bunions or plantar fasciitis, you already know that not all sandals are your friend. Some look cute for about five minutes, and then your feet are screaming, “Ugh!” I have worn a few pairs that made me rethink all my life choices before I even made it back to the car.

The good news is that there are sandals now that give you real support, cushioning, and comfort without looking bulky or outdated. These are the shoes you can actually walk in, travel in, run errands in, and wear all day without regretting your choices. And at this stage of life, I am not interested in shoes that require suffering. I did enough of that in my younger years, thank you very much.

I’m sharing some of the best supportive sandals for women with bunions or plantar fasciitis, including orthopedic sandals, recovery sandals, walking sandals, and easy, everyday flip-flops that still offer support. A few of these are brands I personally love, and others are highly rated options that check the right boxes for comfort.

Why Supportive Sandals Matter When You Have Foot Pain

Foot pain can make everything harder. A cute outfit is wonderful, but if your feet are throbbing by lunchtime, that outfit suddenly feels a lot less fabulous. Plantar fasciitis often needs shoes with good arch support, cushioning, and a supportive sole, and Mayo Clinic recommends choosing supportive shoes with thick soles, good arch support, and extra cushioning while avoiding flat, unsupportive shoes.

Bunions are a different kind of aggravation. They usually need room, softness, and shoes that don’t rub across that tender area. Cleveland Clinic notes that switching to shoes with wide, deep toe boxes can help take pressure off bunions.

So, no, this is not just about comfort. It is about finding sandals that support your feet, give your toes room, and don’t make you walk like you just stepped barefoot on a Lego.

What to Look for in Sandals for Bunions or Plantar Fasciitis

Before we get to the sandals, let’s talk about what actually makes a sandal better for sore feet. This is the part I wish someone had explained to me years ago, before I bought sandals based on looks alone and then wondered why my feet staged a full rebellion.

Look for arch support first. If you have plantar fasciitis, a flat sandal can make heel pain worse because your foot has to work harder with every step.

Look for cushioning, especially under the heel and ball of the foot. A little softness can make a big difference when you are walking on hard floors, pavement, or through a store that somehow keeps getting bigger the longer you shop.

Look for adjustable straps. These are especially helpful if you have bunions, swelling, or one foot that acts differently from the other. Surely I am not the only one with a foot that likes to be dramatic.

Look for a roomy toe area. Anything that squeezes across the bunion area is probably going to bother you, even if it looks adorable on the website.

Look for a stable sole. A sandal that bends like a tortilla may feel lightweight, but it usually will not give enough support for all-day wear.

My Favorite Sandals for Comfort

Aetrex Espadrille Wedge Sandals

Aetrex Espadrille Wedge Sandals (Size 9-9.5)

These are my favorite Orthopedic Sandals. These have built-in arch support you can actually feel, especially if you deal with plantar fasciitis or just general foot fatigue.

They’re designed to help keep your foot aligned, which sounds technical, but what it really means is your feet, ankles, and even knees don’t feel as worn out at the end of the day. I also love that the straps are adjustable, so you’re not fighting to make them fit. They adjust to you, not the other way around.

These are a great choice if you want something supportive but still a little dressier than a basic walking sandal. The espadrille style makes them easy to wear with dresses, cropped pants, shorts, or casual summer outfits.

NAOT Sandals with Cork Footbed and Arch Support

If you’ve been following me for a while, you know these are my “holy grail” walking sandals. The reason I keep coming back to these is the security and the support. The cork footbed actually molds to the shape of your foot, so the more you wear them, the more comfortable they get.

I especially love the adjustable straps. They make it easy to get a more customized fit, which is helpful if your feet swell during the day or if you need a little extra room around a bunion. They stay securely on your foot without that annoying slipping and sliding that makes you grip the sandal with your toes.

Note: These run a bit small, so I recommend sizing up for the best fit.

Recovery Sandal (Maximum Cushion + Relief)

OOFOS Original Recovery Sandal

This recovery flip-flop is a favorite for a reason. This is the kind of sandal you reach for when your feet are tired, and you want softness underfoot. The footbed is designed to absorb shock and reduce stress on your joints and heels, which makes it a nice option after a long day of walking.

This is not the dressiest sandal in the group, but it has its place. I think of this as the sandal you wear around the house, to the pool, after exercise, or when your feet need a little mercy. Joe may not notice a new blouse, but he would probably notice if I were hobbling around the kitchen as if I had aged 20 years overnight.

Classic Support (Tried & True Comfort)

Birkenstock Arizona Soft Footbed Sandal

Black Birkenstock two strap sandal.

This classic two-strap sandal is a classic for a reason. The two-strap design is simple, but the contoured footbed gives support that molds to your foot over time. These are great if you like a sandal with structure and a timeless look.

The soft footbed version gives you a little extra cushioning, which can be helpful if regular Birkenstocks feel too firm at first. They also have adjustable straps, which is always a plus when you need a better fit across the top of the foot.

My sister has these and loves them. And trust me, if my sister loves something, she will tell me. If she does not love something, she will also tell me. Sisters are basically Yelp reviews with better hair.

Orthotic Flip Flops (Easy + Everyday Wear)

COFACE Orthotic Flip Flops – Yoga Mat Cushion

This cushioned orthotic flip flop are a good option if you want something simple and easy for everyday wear. They have a cushioned, yoga mat-style sole that feels soft underfoot, but they still offer more support than a flimsy flat flip-flop.

These would be good for casual errands, around the house, pool days, or beach trips when you want something easy to slip on. They are not as structured as a walking sandal, but they are a better option than the paper-thin flip-flops that belong in the “what were we thinking” category.

AEROTHOTIC Flip Flops with Cushioned Footbed

This cushioned support sandal are another easy option for women who want comfort without a complicated sandal. They have an orthopedic-style footbed that helps reduce pressure on the heels and arches, and the cushioned sole gives them a softer feel.

I also like that the straps are padded, which helps if your feet are sensitive or if you tend to get rubbing across the top of your foot. These are nice for indoor and outdoor wear, especially on casual days when you want something supportive but still quick to throw on.

Supportive Walking Sandals (Stability + All-Day Comfort)

Vionic Walk Max Wanderer Sandal

This supportive walking sandal is built more like a true walking sandal. It has strong arch support and a stable sole, which helps reduce strain on your feet when you are walking for longer periods.

This is the kind of sandal I would look at for travel days, sightseeing, outlet shopping, or any day when you know you’ll be on your feet a lot. The secure straps help keep your foot in place, so you’re not sliding around with every step. That matters more than we think, especially once our feet start sending daily opinion pieces.

KuaiLu Orthopedic Walking Sandals

This orthopedic walking sandal have a sportier look, but they are practical for long casual days. The adjustable straps help you get a better fit, which is helpful if your feet swell or if you have bunions that need a little extra space.

The cushioned sole helps absorb impact while walking, making these a good option for outdoor activities, errands, casual travel, or days when comfort is the main goal. These are not fancy, but they are useful, and sometimes useful wins the day.

OrthoFeet Chloe Sandal

This orthopedic sandal is made specifically with sensitive feet in mind, including plantar fasciitis, bunions, and general foot pain. It has built-in orthotic support with good arch support to help align your foot and reduce strain.

The multi-layer cushioning helps absorb shock with every step, and the three adjustable straps are a big win. They let you customize the fit around bunions or swelling without creating pressure in the wrong spot. This is one of those sandals that truly prioritizes comfort but still looks nice enough to wear out of the house.

Aetrex Sandal

This orthopedic quarter strap sandal is a great option if you want serious support without giving up style. It has built-in arch support that helps align your foot and reduce strain from plantar fasciitis, along with a cushioned memory foam footbed that feels soft with every step.

The adjustable straps are especially helpful if you have bunions or swelling, since you can customize the fit and avoid pressure points. I also love that they are velcro. At this stage of life, I am not above appreciating Velcro. If it makes my life easier, I am all for it.

One Last Thing

Gurls, when it comes to sandals and foot pain, support is everything. A pretty sandal is wonderful, but not if it makes you limp by the end of the day. Look for good arch support, cushioned soles, soft straps, adjustable features, and enough room so your toes do not feel squished.

When your feet feel good, everything else feels easier. You stand taller, walk better, and enjoy your day more. And honestly, that is the goal. Cute shoes are fun, but cute shoes that do not make your feet holler are even better.

What about you? Do you have a favorite supportive sandal brand, or are you still hunting for the pair that makes your feet happy?
