The 8 Best Fall Boots Every Woman Over 50 Needs in Her Closet
1. Classic Ankle Boots
If you don’t already own a pair of ankle boots, let me tell you—this is the one boot every woman over 50 should have in her closet. These little gems are incredibly versatile, and they go with just about anything, from jeans to dresses. Plus, they’re the perfect transitional shoe as the weather starts to cool down.
I’m a big fan of a classic leather or suede ankle boot with a low to mid-heel. They’re just the right amount of dressy without feeling too fussy. Whether you’re headed to lunch with the girls or running errands, ankle boots will keep you stylish and comfortable all day long.
When shopping for ankle boots, look for features like side zippers or elastic panels—they make it so much easier to slip them on and off. I also recommend sticking to neutral colors like black, tan, or taupe because they go with everything!
2. Riding Boots
Ladies, if you haven’t discovered the magic of riding boots yet, now is the time. These boots are the definition of timeless. Riding boots add a touch of sophistication to any outfit, and they’re perfect for those crisp fall days when you want to wear a dress or skirt and need a little more leg coverage.
I also love pairing riding boots with skinny jeans or leggings and a cozy sweater. You’ll look effortlessly chic, like you’re heading out for a day in the countryside (even if you’re just grabbing groceries). The great thing about riding boots is that they instantly elevate your look, and they’re so comfortable since they typically don’t have a large heel.
If you’ve got wider calves like me, don’t worry! Many brands offer extended sizes, so you can find a pair that fits just right. Stick to classic leather in black or brown, and you’ll have these beauties in your wardrobe for years to come.

3. Wedge Boots
Now, let’s talk about wedge boots. If you’re someone who loves a little extra height but doesn’t want to sacrifice comfort, these are the boots for you! Wedges give you that lift we all love while being so much easier on your feet than traditional heels.
I adore wedge boots because they’re stylish, comfortable, and perfect for all-day wear. I’m talking about everything from running errands to dinner dates—these boots can do it all! You can dress them up or down, and they go with everything from dresses to skinny jeans.
Look for wedge boots in suede or leather for a chic, polished look. I like them in neutral tones like camel, black, or taupe because they’re incredibly versatile. The wedge style is great for women over 50 who want to stay fashionable but still need something practical.

4. Suede Boots
There’s just something about suede boots that screams fall! They’re soft, luxurious, and instantly elevate any outfit. Whether you’re rocking a pair of ankle-length suede boots or going for knee-high, this style is a must-have for the cooler months.
One of my go-to looks for fall is a pair of suede boots with skinny jeans and an oversized sweater. It’s a classic combo that’s both stylish and cozy—exactly what we all want for fall, right?
But here’s a tip, ladies: make sure you treat your suede boots with a protective spray. Suede can be a little tricky when it comes to moisture, so a quick spray will help keep them looking brand new. And as always, I recommend sticking to those earthy, neutral tones like brown, taupe, or olive—they just scream fall!

5. Knee High or Over-the-Knee Boots
Now, I know what some of you are thinking—over-the-knee boots for women over 50? Yes, absolutely! Don’t shy away from these just because they have a reputation for being a little daring. When worn the right way, tall boots can look incredibly classy and sophisticated.
The trick is to balance the look. I love pairing knee high boots with a knee-length sweater dress or a long tunic. You get the coverage you need while still looking stylish. And trust me, these boots are surprisingly comfortable, especially when you opt for a flat or low heel.
If you’re ready to take the plunge into super tall boot territory, go for classic colors like black or grey. You’ll find they’re easier to style than you might think and can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion.
6. Chelsea Boots
I love a good Chelsea boot. These boots are timeless and easy to wear, and they tend to stick around season after season. The pull-on design with elastic side panels makes them super convenient for those days when you’re rushing out the door (we’ve all been there, right?).
I find that Chelsea boots are perfect for casual days when you want to look put-together without too much effort. They pair beautifully with skinny jeans or straight-leg trousers and a tailored blazer for a chic, polished look. You could also wear them with a regular old crewneck sweater or turtleneck and jeans for a laid-back outfit.
7. Heeled Booties
There are times when we all need a little extra height and glam, and that’s when heeled booties come in handy. I find myself having more heeled boots and booties than I do flat ones, LOL! They are my go-to shoe for things like date night, church, etc. during fall and winter.
I always recommend a block heel over a stiletto. Block heels are more stable, which makes them easier to walk in, especially if you’re like me and can’t wear high heels for too long. If you’re worried about pain, look for a pair with cushioned insoles. Your feet will thank you!
8. Western-Inspired Boots
Western-inspired boots have made a big comeback, and I have to say, I’m here for it! These boots are perfect for adding a little cowgirl flair to your fall wardrobe, and they’re surprisingly versatile.
You can wear Western boots with a flowy dress or a skirt for a fun, boho-chic look. Or, pair them with jeans and a button-up shirt for a more laid-back, casual vibe. They’re playful, comfortable, and they add just the right amount of personality to your outfit.
If you’re new to the Western boot trend, start with a simple pair in a neutral color like tan or brown. You’ll be surprised at how much wear you’ll get out of them!

Hello,Tania,
I love boots,as well. Some of the styles you showed are absolutely darling! I loved the riding boots, and am in the market for a new pair. I’ve had mine for years, and they are finally looking like they need to be replaced. Thanks for all the great fashion posts. I really enjoy reading them!
Cheers!
I love all the Cool boots! Thanks for all your research!
Love all of these boots especially the dark brown ankle boots!
Couldn’t get through the winter without my ankle boots!
I love boots! I always say the only thing I love about cooler fall and winter weather is that I get to wear boots! As I get older, I don’t wear any heels higher than 2 inches. I like the wedge boots that you are wearing.
Picky about my boots! Love the Chelsea boot look but must have a zipper to get it on my foot. I can’t pull them on.. any suggestions?
That style with a zipper is a little harder to find.
take them to the shoe shop. they will put zippers.
not a problem👍
Cute boots.
I love boots but where I live, they are impractical. I do have one knee high pair and one ankle bootie for when it’s “cold” out. 🙂
I have one pair for snow, and I get to wear them a couple of times a year.
Love the ankle boots. I have a pair of Alegrea ankle boots. I didn’t think they’d be as comfortable as they are. I just bought a pair of Dansko Frankie ankle boots. so comfortable, too.
Love all these boots!
I love boots.
Oh how I love my boots and am so happy that fall is finally here!!
Nice selection of boots!
Wedge boots and shoes are my favorite!!
I love boots too! Just bought a pair of moto boots last week when I met my twin sister to go shopping. 😊 Might need a pair of Chelsea boots next!
I like the dark brown booties. I have two pair from Clark’s that are similar.
Thanks for this post Tania. I’m loving the Blondo Sinner boots, but I’m hoping they don’t run narrow. I may give them a try.
Thinking about a pair of western boots! You & your sister are so cute!
I am guessing that instead of a standard closet, you have a clothes/shoes ROOM. So many great choices.
Great boot ideas! Happy Fall! 🍂🍁
