When winter arrives, it’s easy to get swept up in oversized puffer jackets, bulky boots, and whatever keeps you warm. Gurls, I’m here to tell you that just because the temperatures are dropping doesn’t mean your sense of style has to take a nosedive! In fact, winter fashion is all about finding that sweet spot between staying cozy and looking put together. With a few simple winter fashion dos and don’ts, you can embrace the chill without sacrificing your style. Let’s explore how to rock winter looks that keep you warm, confident, and feeling fabulous all season long!

Winter Fashion Dos and Don’ts for Mature Women

Fabulous Coat for Cold Weather, Winter Fashion Dos and Don'ts
Double Breasted Belted Coat (Medium)

DO: Invest in a Fabulous Coat

Your coat is the star of your winter wardrobe, so make it count! Look for one that’s warm, well-fitted, and makes you feel like a million bucks. Classic options like wool coats, chic trenches, or longline puffers in neutral colors will always be in style. These pieces are worth the investment because they elevate everything you wear underneath.

  • Tania’s Tip: Want to really make a statement? Choose a coat with a fun detail like a bold color, a fur collar, or a belted waist. You’ll look polished even if you’re just running to the grocery store!
  • DON’T: Hang onto that old, worn-out coat you’ve had for years. If it’s looking a little sad, it’s time to upgrade! And steer clear of anything too oversized—you don’t want to look like you’re drowning in fabric.

Layering Fashion Tips for Mature Women
Double Breasted Duster Cardigan (Medium) | Cable Knit V-Neck Sweater Vest (Large) | Striped Shirt (Medium) | Barely Boot Jeans (Size 8)

DO: Layer Like a Pro

Layering isn’t just practical—it’s a chance to play with different textures and colors. Start with a lightweight base layer, like a long-sleeve tee or turtleneck, and add cozy sweaters, cardigans, or blazers on top. Layering not only keeps you warm but also adds depth to your outfit.

  • Tania’s Tip: Don’t forget to layer under your pants, too! Fleece-lined leggings or tights are a lifesaver on those especially cold days.
  • DON’T: Pile on so many layers that you can barely move. The goal is to look chic, not like you’re headed to the North Pole.

Practical Winter Boots for Women Over 50
Women’s Down Maxi Winter Coat (Medium) | Insulated Winter Snow Boots (TTS)

DO: Wear Stylish, Practical Boots

Winter boots can be both cute and functional. A great pair of leather ankle boots, knee-high boots, or even trendy lug-sole boots can keep you warm while looking stylish. Bonus points if they’re waterproof! And don’t forget to take care of them with a good polish or weatherproof spray.

  • Tania’s Tip: If you’re in snowy weather, grab a pair of snow boots. Just make sure they’re stylish—there are so many cute options now that don’t scream “ski lodge.”
  • DON’T: Stick with worn-out boots that have seen better days. And avoid heels that will leave you slipping and sliding on icy sidewalks. Safety first, ladies!

Pop of Color, Winter Fashion Dos and Donts

DO: Add a Pop of Color

Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean you have to stick to boring black or gray. A pop of color can brighten up a dreary day and make you feel fabulous. Jewel tones like emerald green, deep red, or sapphire blue are flattering and oh-so-chic. Try adding color through scarves, coats, or sweaters.

  • Tania’s Tip: If you’re feeling bold, go for a colorful coat or handbag to make a statement. You’ll stand out in the best way!
  • DON’T: Overdo it with too many clashing colors. Stick to one or two pops of color and keep the rest of your outfit neutral for a balanced look.
Winter Accessories for a Stylish Mature Women
Satin Lined Knit Beanie Hat

DO: Accessorize to Impress

Winter accessories are a must, and they’re such a fun way to show off your style. From cozy scarves to chic gloves and hats, these little details can pull your whole look together. I especially love a cute beanie or a wide-brim hat for a touch of glam.

  • Tania’s Tip: Faux fur accents on scarves or earmuffs can add a little luxury to your outfit. Who doesn’t love feeling fancy?
  • DON’T: Forget your accessories! Not only do they keep you warm, but they also make you look more polished and put-together.

DO: Choose the Right Fabrics

Winter is all about cozy, warm fabrics like wool, cashmere, and fleece. These materials are not only practical but also look luxurious. They’re worth the investment because they last for years and always look classy.

  • Tania’s Tip: If cashmere is out of your budget, there are some amazing cashmere blends or even cashmere-feel options that look just as chic. I shared all kinds of options in this post!
  • DON’T: Wear fabrics that aren’t winter-appropriate, like lightweight cotton or linen. You’ll be freezing and look out of place. Save those for spring and summer!
Modern and Timeless Winter Fashion for Women
Faux Fur Trim Coat (Medium)

DO: Keep It Modern

Staying stylish as we age isn’t about chasing every trend, but it is about keeping things feeling fresh. Updating your wardrobe with timeless staples—like straight-leg jeans, sleek turtlenecks, and trendy boots—helps you maintain a current look without trying too hard. Plus, these updates prevent you from spending money on trendy pieces you’ll only wear for one season. I dive deeper into this topic here, so be sure to check it out!

  • Tania’s Tip: If you’re not sure where to start, look for inspiration online or in stores like Nordstrom or Talbots. They always have updated classics that work for mature women.
  • DON’T: Hold onto outdated pieces just because they’re comfy. If it’s looking worn or feels frumpy, it’s time to donate and refresh your closet. You can read my tips for cleaning and organizing your closet here.
How to wear textures like velvet, leather, and sequins for women over 50
100% Merino Wool Cable Pullover Sweater (Large) | Velvet Leggings (Size 10) | Zipper Foldover Clutch |  Similar Leopard Print Pumps | Kinsley Gold Statement Necklace in Ivory Mix

DO: Have Fun with Textures

Winter is the perfect time to mix and match textures. Think soft knits, sleek leather, and plush velvet—it all works together to create a rich, layered look. Don’t be afraid to experiment!

  • Tania’s Tip: A velvet blazer or a faux leather skirt is a great way to add a little drama to your outfit. Pair them with something soft, like a cashmere sweater, for balance.
  • DON’T: Overdo it with too much of one texture. Mixing textures is chic; wearing all velvet or all leather can feel a little over-the-top.

Shopping for texture can feel overwhelming, so I hope these posts make it easier to find exactly what you’re looking for:

DO: Stay Comfortable

This is probably the most important “do” of all—make sure you’re comfortable! There’s nothing chic about being miserable in shoes that pinch or layers that leave you sweating. When you feel good, you look good—it’s as simple as that.

  • Tania’s Tip: Invest in pieces that have a little stretch or give. You can look stylish and still feel like you’re wearing your favorite comfy clothes. My favorite comfy clothes are matching athleisure sets. You can find my favorites here and here.
  • DON’T: Force yourself into anything that doesn’t feel good just because it’s trendy. Confidence is always in style!

Thank you for the helpful suggestions Tania. I recently had an early morning doctor appointment and realized I didn’t add enough layers. I can remember my Mom telling me years ago to dress in layers.

    1. It is the best and easiest way to stay warm.

  4. Great ideas. I love the layering idea, also the cosiness of it.

  5. Christine Hess says:

Thank you for sharing your tips and advice! I’ve been style challenged for years, now I can shop with confidence.

  6. I’ve been wearing all my red tops and sweaters and changing to dark blue jeans, or black jeans or black heavy weight leggings. Also wore dark wash jeans with deep green wool sweater, with a marigold turtleneck underneath. Your tips are absolutely on-target, Tania!

  7. I love your post! I have the rich burgundy vest the color is beautiful. I also have the satin lined beanie.

Thank you for sharing these great tips with us. Good advice all around.

Tania, Thank you for sharing so many great suggestions with us! My body overheats very quickly and easily, so I do have to be careful with layering and fabric content. I do like adding a pop of color with my handbag or shoes. I like your idea of wearing tights under my pants, however, I wonder about adding an extra layer around my waistline and being comfortable all day.

  10. All good advice. thanks for the reminders and for all your posts.

  11. So cute about your granddaughter. I’m sure I would have been just as hesitant! She’s adorable. Great advice for us with colors, textures, etc. love the dark flare jeans. I clicked on the link and was surprised to see they are from Walmart. Only because they look expensive. lol
    Darn, all sold out!

I would like to be an “immature” woman – haha

  13. Good tips. I wore my fleece leggings under jeans that are a bit big on me yesterday. The leggings filled them out. Your granddaughter is braver than me. I might try caviliar with a Chick-fil-A nugget but never McDonald’s.

  14. Tania, I am so pleased to learn my love of fleece lined tights is shared! I am actually wearing them this morning with a pair of my Talbots fleece lined leggings! This is our 4th day without power. (No need to call 911. We have a gas fireplace AND my Keurig works thanks to a generator. Just no furnace…doing fine).

    1. Yikes!!! One winter, the power went out in the entire county. Ours thankfully came back on by morning. We ended up having all my kids friends staying with us because their parents wanted to make sure they were warm. We had a fireplace too, so we had a lot of firewood, and several tanks of propane. Since we weren’t needing them, we gave them to friends along with the use of our generator. Everyone has to come together when there is a large problem like that.

  15. I got something out of every one of these tips!! You’re on fire today!

  16. Love the pop of color recommendation. Must remember that.

  17. I would be the one trying hard to make myself eat something iffy. Some people just go on about their business when it’s not good or if the texture is weird. I’m traumatized. HA!

  18. Colleen Wheat says:

These are great ideas! I really appreciate you sharing as there are some I would not have put in my thought process!
