7 Must-Have Coats for Women Over 50 This Winter
It feels like we were just talking about lightweight sweaters and pumpkin spice lattes, and now we’re bundling up for those chilly winds and maybe even snow. While I’m not a fan of freezing temperatures, I am a fan of fabulous coats. A good coat doesn’t just keep you warm; it pulls your whole outfit together. In fact, in the dead of winter, the coat is the outfit!
If you’re over 50 like me, you know we want pieces that are practical, stylish, and make us feel confident. This winter, I’ve rounded up the must-have coats for every occasion, whether you’re heading to a holiday party, running errands, or just taking a cozy stroll through your neighborhood.
7 Must-Have Coats for Women Over 50 This Winter
The Wool Coat
A wool coat is like your favorite pair of jeans—classic, reliable, and always in style. If you don’t already own one, now’s the time to grab this staple. Wool coats are warm enough for most winter days and look great with just about everything. They’re my go-to for wearing with dressier outfits like a dress, skirt, or trousers in the winter.
Camel Wool or Faux Wool Coat
I’ve been loving camel-colored coats lately because they pair beautifully with both casual and dressy outfits. Wool coats with a hint of cashmere are extra soft, but even a well-made wool blend can last you for years if you care for it properly. The one I’m wearing here is faux wool, which works great for those who can’t wear wool. This coat is beautiful and gives the look of wool without the high price and wool allergies.
The Puffer Coat
If you’re in a colder climate, a puffer coat is your best friend. I used to think puffers were too bulky, but let me tell you—they’ve come a long way! These days, you can find sleek, flattering styles that keep you warm without making you feel like the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. If you want to add a little extra shape, look for a puffer coat with a belted waist—it’s amazing how much difference a belt can make!
I know we all love a neutral puffer, but if you want to stand out this winter, look for a bold-colored puffer coat. Pair it with jeans or black leggings, then add any shoe you want… a tall boot, a sneaker, or a flat!

The Long Coat
A long coat is a non-negotiable in my closet as a woman over 50! No matter the style, I like the longer length for keeping my legs and bottom warm. I also love how they look with a dress! It’s dramatic, timeless, and perfect for creating a sleek, elongated silhouette.
Long coats are also so versatile! They work just as well for formal occasions like church or weddings as they do for everyday errands. If you’re more petite and worried a long coat will swallow you up, opt for a long coat that falls just below the knee to avoid overwhelming your frame.
The Parka
For those days when winter isn’t messing around, a parka is your best bet. These coats are built for serious cold and often come with practical features like water-resistant fabrics, insulated linings, and cozy hoods. They’re perfect for outdoor adventures or even just walking the dog. A good parka is my go-to when I know I’ll be out in the elements. Add a knit hat and gloves, and you’re ready for whatever winter throws your way. If you want a parka that feels a little more luxe, choose one with a faux fur trim—it’s functional and stylish.
The Faux Fur Coat
If you’ve got a holiday party or just want to feel extra fancy, a faux fur coat is the way to go. It’s cozy, glamorous, and always makes a statement. Whether you choose classic black, a soft neutral, or a fun animal print, faux fur is guaranteed to turn heads. I grabbed this one when I was styling the “Mob Wife Trend” earlier this year!
If you don’t love the faux fur look, but still want softer looking jacket, try a teddy bear fleece! This one is soft and warm, but not fuzzy.
The Trench Coat
You might think of trench coats as a spring thing, but winter trenches are a game-changer. Made with heavier fabrics and often lined for extra warmth, these coats give you that polished look while still keeping you cozy. They’re perfect for mild winter days when you want something a little lighter.
You can find some of my favorite trench coats in this post!
The Quilted Jacket
If you live somewhere with milder winters, a quilted jacket might be all you need. These lightweight jackets are perfect for layering and have a sporty yet stylish vibe. They’re great for days when you’re running around town but don’t need the bulk of a heavy coat. This one is sold out, but there are tons of great options on Amazon. I especially like this one, because it looks like something you’d see at Free People or Anthropologie!
Choosing Your Winter Coats
When it comes to winter coats, I always say it’s better to have a few high-quality options that cover different needs rather than trying to make one coat work for every situation. A wool coat for dressier days, a puffer for casual outings, and a wrap coat or parka for everything in between can carry you through the season in style.

I’ve lost so much weight, 45 lbs so far, that I need new coats! Maybe an article on very warm, raincoats with zip out warm layers? Love this email every day!!!
I love the tan outfit one of your granddaughtersis wearing

I can’t believe the Camel top coat is from Walmart!! here in Mass, a puffer coat comes in handy. today was in the low 30s and windy. Brrrrr
can’t believe that in NC IT’S colder.

Oh my goodness, your granddaughters are adorable!! One looks like you and the other your daughter ❤️
I love all the coats you’ve previewed, especially the long wool and trench. I’m not in need of another coat, in fact it’s time to donate, but enjoyed seeing them
The teddy bear fleece looks cozy. I prefer to wear a lighter weight jacket with a warm sweater rather than a heavy coat. Some coats are too overwhelming on my petite frame.
The faux fur leopard coat makes quite a statement!
Cute stuff! I did get a beautiful trench coat from Quince (a brand you introduced me to…Thank You!) it’s the perfect weight for where I live! Happy Friday ❤️❤️❤️
I am thrilled that you’ve tried Quince. I’m getting ready to place a big order from them.
Thank you for sharing! Your granddaughters are so cute—and may be fashion bloggers soon!
Your granddaughters are adorable!
Love the different styles and lengths shown. You can make quite the “entrance” in a couple of these!
I love all of these coats.
You look so elegant in the faux fur!
The winter coats post was fun but what really caught my eye was the pearlized raglan sweater in light blue — 60% cotton. But I can only wear such a light color in the summer, but it is still quite tempting. I’m enjoying the posts!
Wow! That leopard coat is a statement! It looks great on you.
I thought it was gorgeous!
It sure was
Cute photo and the one padded quilted coat from Amazon is nice
Beautiful coats. My computer currently reads 21 degrees in upstate SC, so definitely a coat day! Those are pretty rare around here. Happy shopping! Granddaughters are so fun.
It was 15 today! 🥶️
I do love coats and have many to prove it! Great post of some great coats!
Coats are one of the things I tend to collect.
