Holiday travel is about to start, and if you’re anything like me, you know that it can be as exhausting as it is exciting. And when we’re over 50, we want outfits that keep us comfortable and looking stylish, right? I’ve been on plenty of car rides and flights, and I’ve learned that dressing comfortably doesn’t mean sacrificing style! Today, I’m sharing my favorite comfortable travel outfit ideas for women over 50 to keep you looking chic and feeling cozy from the airport or car all the way to your destination.

Essentials for a Comfortable Travel Outfit

Comfort is Key

When it comes to travel, comfort should always come first! I’m talking about stretchy fabrics, loose silhouettes, and layers that allow you to move and breathe. Think about what you’d be comfortable sitting in for hours on end—whether on a flight or a long drive.

For those days when you just want to feel like you’re wearing pajamas (but look a little more polished), joggers or athleisure pants are the answer. They’re comfy, breathable, and you can easily dress them up a bit with a cute top or light jacket. Look for styles with a little more structure, so they don’t just look like loungewear. You can find some of my favorite athleisure brands here, as well as some loungewear you’ll feel comfortable wearing out in public over in this post.

Layers for Temperature Control

Airports, planes, and different destinations can have wildly different temperatures, so layering is key. I often bring a cardigan along for flights because they are easy to slip on if I get chilly. They’re lightweight, add a nice bit of texture to your outfit, and can even double as a little blanket if you need it on the plane.

A denim or utility jacket is another travel favorite of mine. They’re not only stylish but practical—just throw one over your basic tee, and voila! Instant chic. And don’t forget, jackets with pockets are lifesavers. Pockets are perfect for keeping your essentials handy, like your phone or passport. View my favorite denim jackets here, and my favorite ways to style them over in this post.

A big scarf or pashmina is one of the most versatile items you can pack! It can serve as a blanket, a wrap, or just an extra layer of warmth when you need it. I love scarves in fun colors or patterns to brighten up a neutral outfit—and they make any look feel a little more special.

Basic Tees and Tanks

You can’t go wrong with a simple tee or tank as your base. They’re easy to layer and versatile enough to dress up or down. I love packing a few in basic colors like white, black, or grey—you’ll always have something that goes with everything else in your suitcase. You can find some of my favorite base layers here.

Breathable Fabrics Are a Must

Ladies, if there’s one thing you don’t want, it’s feeling overheated or stuffy. Breathable fabrics like cotton or bamboo are perfect for travel, keeping you cool and fresh throughout the day. Plus, they’re usually wrinkle-resistant, which is a bonus when you’re hopping from plane to car to hotel.

Wrinkle-Free Clothing

Speaking of wrinkle-resistant clothing, some of our favorite brands have lines specifically designed to keep you looking polished on your next journey!

Have you seen Talbots Travel Capsules line? It’s full of mix-and-match pieces in wrinkle-resistant fabrics, so you can create plenty of chic outfits without overstuffing your suitcase.

You’ve probably seen the Chico’s Travelers Collection, but it’s a real lifesaver for frequent flyers! Their wrinkle-resistant pieces pack like a dream and still look great when you unpack. They even have a lot of sparkly, glamorous pieces that are going to be great for winter weddings and holiday parties!

Stretchy Pants and Leggings

Ladies, if you don’t already own a pair of stretchy pants or leggings, it’s time to try them out. Choose neutral colors like black or navy that go with anything, so you’re ready to go wherever the day takes you. I share my favorite leggings here.

Comfortable Travel Footwear for Women Over 50

When you’re traveling, the right pair of shoes can make or break your whole day. We want comfort, support, and a style that’s versatile enough to go with any travel outfit. Now, it really depends on where you are headed and the time of year, but you can’t go wrong with any of these:

Sneakers

Sneakers, especially slip-on ones, are a lifesaver for travel. Not only are they easy to get on and off (especially handy when going through airport security), but they’re also built for comfort. Look for styles with cushioned soles and arch support, so your feet stay comfortable even after hours of walking.

I share a lot of sneaker recommendations around here! Check out these posts for all of my suggestions:

Ballet Flats or Loafers

If you’re looking for something a little more dressed up, ballet flats or loafers are a great choice. They’re compact, easy to pack, and add a touch of polish to any outfit. The trick is to find a pair with a bit of padding and a flexible sole.

Sandals

If you’re traveling to a warm destination, a pair of supportive sandals can be your best friend. I recommend sandals in neutral shades like tan, black, or metallics since they can be styled with everything from shorts to casual dresses. Check out my picks here!

  1. I just love these comfy outfits! Even if I’m just staying at home, they are perfect.
Recently, I was going through some boxes of stuff from my late MIL’s house and found some school work she did when she was 8 years old. She passed away in 2021 at 90 so these are quite old. The most interesting thing was a story she wrote about Christmas. It was so sweet. What a treasure!

Again, thank you for the $50 Amazon gift card! I’m going to buy one of these outfits with it!! What fun!!

  2. Cyndie Meline says:

    So many great choices!

  3. Ginger Hiller says:

Love the scripture verse! I am going to take a closer look at several of the sets you shared so that I can suggest them to my hubby for my Christmas. Thank you!

My mom passed away almost 4 years ago and Dad a few months ago. I found so many treasures going through their things. My grandmother’s bible from when she was a young girl, her mother’s bible from the 1890’s, and her grandmother’s bible from 1861! Plus 2 Henry Wadsworth Longfellow books from the 1800’s that are in pristine condition! I have 2 antique quilts as well made by great aunts. I have all of these treasures in my grandmother’s beautiful art deco style cedar chest. I feel very blessed to have these things. BTW, first time posting…. usually just lurk around LOL.

    1. Leslie, I am so glad you decided to comment and let us all know about your wonderful finds. I tell my kids what means the most from me so that they know not to put it in a yard sale for a few bucks.

  10. Yup, I have the same pattern of afghan but in a variety of colors. My grandma was legally blind but she was still able to crochet and made a ton of them! I kept A couple and my kids all have one and the rest I had to donate. Every time I look at them it reminds me of my wonderful grandma! A definite keepsake!

  11. So many cute comfy outfits to choose from! Love comfy clothes!

  12. Kathy Laweryson says:

  14. Oh my goodness, I just want to go buy them all! LOL! They look so comfortable but very stylish. Of course I have nowhere to go right now, but what great ideas for me to keep in mind if any traveling plans happen to materialize.

    1. Most of my traveling is by car, and these are perfect for those trips, too.

  15. I have the exact same afghan in the same color pattern! We received it for our wedding shower and were married the same year you were.

    1. Lots of great travel outfits. now, I just need to book a trip!

  16. I just found some of these hidden treasures! My 91 year old mom passed last month and we were cleaning out her home and I came across some of her orginial crochet blankets. What a gem! We will miss her.

Traveling for me includes shoes that can come off and on easily, especially for those TSA checkpoints, socks (my legs and feet get cold), a hoodie or a wrap as an extra layer and for my head (especially on a plane) – my head can get cold, and wipes for airline seats or rest stops/hotels/fast food stops. Can’t forget my Kindle loaded with all kinds of good reads! It sure beats 10 pounds of books in my luggage.

  21. Let be treasures like this..

  22. These styles look very comfortable for travelling.

    Beautiful treasure find.
