Gurls, let’s talk about something many of us experience but don’t always discuss—those times when our bodies are in transition. Whether it’s due to menopause, a few extra pounds (hello, chocolate cake!), or simply life’s natural changes, dressing when you’re in between sizes can be tricky. I’m sharing my favorite tips and tricks to help you look fabulous, feel confident, and embrace this phase with grace.

How to Dress When You’re Between Sizes

1. Forget About the Size on the Tag

Seriously, gurls, don’t let a number on a label ruin your day. Clothes are meant to fit YOU, not the other way around. Every brand sizes differently, so don’t hesitate to grab a different size if it fits better.

If something doesn’t fit quite right, but you love it, take it to a tailor. A little nip here or tuck there can make all the difference. Trust me, it’s worth it for those pieces you adore!

2. Stretchy Fabrics Are Your Best Friend

When your size is fluctuating, stretchy fabrics can be a lifesaver. Look for materials with a bit of spandex or elastane—they’ll move with you and feel much comfier.

3. Master the Art of Layering

Layers can do wonders, gurls! They add style, provide coverage, and make it easy to adjust to fluctuating sizes. Start with a fitted tank or tee as your base, then add a structured jacket or flowy cardigan.

4. Say Yes to Adjustable Waistbands

Oh, the joy of adjustable waistbands! Whether it’s pants, skirts, or shorts, having a little flexibility in the waist can make all the difference. You can find some of my favorite Elastic Pants/Pull on Pants for Women Over 50 here.

5. Don’t Skimp on Shapewear

Gurls, shapewear is like a secret weapon. It’s not about squeezing into something uncomfortable; it’s about creating a smooth foundation. The right shapewear can make you feel like a million bucks. High-waisted briefs for tummy control, bodysuits that smooth everything out, and lightweight slip shorts under dresses are all great options. I share tons of high-rated, affordable options here.

6. Accessorize Like a Pro

Accessories can save the day! When you’re feeling unsure about your outfit, add a pop of personality with jewelry, scarves, or a fabulous handbag.

7. Stay True to Your Style

Just because your body is changing doesn’t mean your style has to. Find ways to adapt your favorite looks to work for you right now. If you need more help with establishing your own style, check out 5 Style Resolutions for Women Over 50 in 2025 and 10 Fashion Mistakes That Cost You Money Over 50.

8. Embrace the Journey

Gurls, our bodies are always changing, and that’s okay! Instead of stressing over the scale or the size tag, focus on dressing for the woman you are today. You deserve to feel fabulous, no matter where you are on your journey.

How to Shop Smart When In-Between Sizes

Start by focusing on versatile, affordable pieces that can work for multiple outfits. For example, wrap dresses, stretchy pants, and flowy blouses are great investments because they adjust easily to body changes. Another option is to explore clothing rental services like Rent the Runway or Nuuly. These allow you to try stylish pieces without committing to buying items you may outgrow quickly.

I think many of us have experienced being in between sizes (probably more than once!). If you have any additional tips for dressing during this in-between stage, feel free to share them in the comments!

Found it! Thanks for this post. I’m a between sizes girl. I need bigger pants to go over the cankles yet a smaller size at the waist. I can’t do wide leg pants as I almost have a phobia of them. The bell bottoms of the 70’s traumatized me as a kid. Haha and all that fabric swishing between my feet. I’m an easy tripper. I

  13. found it

you look so good in those skirt sets. Are they as cozy as they look?
I’d like to try something other than jeans/pants & a sweater but here in New England it is soooo cold sometimes I ‘d be happy in sweat pants all day…Not my greatest look.

    1. They are very cozy, and I love that you can wear them separately with other items.

  14. Julie Lozano says:

    I FOUND THEM!

  18. Roberta Schwandner says:

I have to admit I do pay too much attention to the size. It should be a guide but I have refused to buy something because I won’t own something that size. I find that the sizes vary more then ever. I can wear a small-large and that’s ridiculous.

    1. I have things in a small all the way to an XL. It is about fit, not about the size.

  19. Linda Derrington says:

    I FOUND IT!!

  20. Found it! Your advice about being between sizes is spot on. I’ve also found that women’s clothing sizes are so different. In some brands a large is great for me,in others and XL is needed. Frustrating!especially if ordering online. I wish womens were standardized like men’s sizing!

  21. Is the navy top available? The tank and pants are from Chicos but I can’t find the top.
    Carol

  22. Please provide a link to the lacey navy tunic you have over the Chico’s side slit tank. Thank you!

  23. Found it. But it was hard. I like the jewelry and advice on in-between sizes. It’s harder with pants or jeans for me. I had female surgery last May. After a couple of months of recovery I got rid of most of the anesthesia bloat. However some of my pants and jeans didn’t fit as well. Now all of a sudden I can fit in them.

  24. Nice suggestions & I found it

  25. Found it, but had to go back and look again

    1. You’ll get faster, and I’ll get sneakier. Lol!

  35. I hope I’m between sizes soon. I started a low-carb diet yesterday and am really enjoying it. Thanks for the inspiration with your carnivore diet. I shop shoes when I’m dieting, and use them as a reward for every 5 pounds. It’s quite an incentive!

  36. these are good suggestions. it is just a number on a tag. thank you for that

  43. Found it! Spandex is my favorite friend

  44. So many good suggestions. I’ve been wearing stretchy pants with elastic waists for awhile. I used to have a waist, not so much anymore! you are wise to remind everyone to ignore the size. squeezing into an ill fitting garment – just because you like the size -makes you look bigger.

  45. Found it but it wasn’t easy!
I love the first outfit the best – tan and white and those beautiful hydrangeas. I didn’t see a link to the lacy navy top over the shell.

  46. I found it! Took a little bit but I found it 😉

  47. Deborah M says:

Found it! I’ve finally learned to try different sizes if my usual size doesn’t look quite right. It’s frequently merchandise sizing issues. Thanks for reinforcing to choose fit over the number on the tag.

    Great ideas.

  56. Barbara K. says:

    Found it!
Reading your posts is part of my morning routine. I enjoy all of it!

  57. Wearing knitwear vs woven fabrics. Knitwear has some natural give to it, so it works +/- a couple pounds. Woven fabrics are stiff and unforgiving. Also, wear your favorite, most flattering colors, especially near your face, which can make you feel more uplifted. And of course, when all else fails, cute shoes!!!

  58. Ruby Hostetler says:

    Found It!
    RAH

  59. Found it! I agree about a really great tailor altering clothes that don’t otherwise fit. I’ve had a few tops and pants altered over the years and what a wonderful difference that has made in fit!

  85. Found it! I love slip shorts for under my summer dresses! I swear I invented Spanx yrs ago when I used to cut the feet out of my control top pantyhose so my pants would look smoother lol I bet a lot of us did that!

You hit the nail on the head today! I’m in weight-loss mode and use many of your tips. I’m feeling more like trying new eye shadow than clothes right now; want to wait until I settle down a bit more into the next size down before I buy more smaller clothes. I just feel “bigger” when I layer on clothing. You look great when you do it.

    1. Maybe your underlayers need to be thinner and not as bulky. That might help.
