I had a wonderful day out with my DIL on Thursday, and she snapped some photos for me on the streets in a neighboring town. The sun was shining so bright, which is great if you are out enjoying yourself, but it isn’t so great if you are trying to take photos. Remember this in the future; bright sunlight can create harsh shadows and make your photos less than optimum. To take a great photo, you need deferred sunlight.

Here are just a few tips for looking your best in photos. If you are in your house or car, face a window with plenty of sunlight, but not shining on you directly. That type of light creates the BEST photo opportunities. You see me stand under my porch almost every day, and that is because I am facing the diffused lighting, and it doesn’t create those harsh shadows. Experiment with your angles. There are times when we will take a test photo with me facing in all of the directions to see which way has the best lighting. Then there are other times when the lighting isn’t great, but we have to stand in that direction to not have crap in the background. Photos of a person, versus photos of a landscape, look better in a portrait mode. That means that the background is fuzzy or muted. Look at the photo above, and then look at the photo below to see the difference. Experiement and have fun, but take the photos! Don’t be like me when I was younger and hide your face. Now I regret not having the photos to look back on my life.

Having some space between your body and your arms is also a great way to have you looking your best in photos. This is one of my favorite clothing purchases that I’ve made from Amazon, and that is saying a lot! But, I love the colors of this cardigan, and I love the longer length. I am once again wearing a color block sweater cardigan, but it looks different since it is larger blocks of color spread out over a longer item. This sweater is a fine gauge material, and you can see that in a close up of the sweater down below. I am wearing a medium in this cardigan, and it is plenty roomy, and a little of the big side. So, if you are teetering between sizes, then I would suggest sizing down.

I have on a lot of jewelry in today’s look. I love the layered look, and the Davis Multi-Chain necklace makes that easy for me. Plus, one of the reasons that I like this necklace so much is because it is also versatile. Each of the chains can be removed from the necklace and worn alone, or the necklace can have two chains instead of three. The large earrings are the Maggie filigree hoops earrings, and these earrings also come in a smaller version. I added the matching Maggie bangle, which has been a bracelet that you see me wear all of the time! The large chain Beckett bracelet is part of the Amazon Prime Day sale, and it is 20% off, so grab that if you’ve been eyeing it.

Fashion Blogger 50 Is Not Old is laughing in a color block sweater cardigan

Laugh! Laughing is a great way to keep looking your best in photos. I read once that Barbara Walters said that she also laughed out loud before having photos taken. I’m not sure that is true, but laughing does make you look better.

Here is the photo that I was trying to show you the material of the sweater. You can see that this is a nice weight sweater and that it is a fine gauge material. This looks like a high-end sweater, in my opinion.

Now, let me tell you about the Vince Camuto Crossbody handbag that I am carrying in some photos. This bag is the perfect size for carrying all of your essentials, and this seashell color is a great neutral that will go with everything. The bag is lambskin, so you know how soft and subtle it is. This is the perfect handbag to carry when you are out shopping or on the go.

I wanted to wear a dark-colored skinny jean with this cardigan, so these high-rise skinnies in the color Deep Lagoon Indigo was a perfect choice. However, if you’ve ever worn skinny jeans, you know that they are not easy to put on or take off as some other jeans. I shared the picture below on Instagram yesterday, and everyone got a kick out of it.

This is me changing clothing between photo sessions in the vehicle. Lol! Being a blogger is not as glamorous as it looks!

These pointed-toe chunky heel ankle boots look fabulous with the jeans. The boots are the perfect style for the jeans’, and the 3 1/4″ stacked heels are comfortable, even if they are tall. The boots have a 4 1/2 shaft, which gives them a higher profile than a lot of ankle boots. That would make them great for wearing with cropped pants also. The boots run true to size, and I am wearing my usual size 9 in the color Cloud Suede.

The last tip to have you looking your best in photos…point one leg. When you have one leg extended, it looks thinner. Also, if it is hiding part of the other leg, you create a slimmer profile. Be sure to tell me what you think about my simple tips for taking a photo. And if you try these tips and they work for you, please let me know. And, if you are feeling brave, send me a photo so that I can celebrate with you.

Notice in this photo that I am facing the diffused light, and the dark circles under my eyes disappear. Lighting makes a huge difference!

I hope that you enjoyed today’s post. My week is crazy busy, especially since I am taking some time on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday to enjoy the “virtual” R+F Convention. Normally, I would be off somewhere celebrating with a lot of my R+F friends, but that didn’t get to happen this year. However, that doesn’t mean that I will not be celebrating; it will just be a much smaller circle. My Energizer Bunny Friend and my DIL will be coming to my house on Thursday night, and then we will be at EBF’s house Friday and Saturday. I can’t wait to hear all the fantastic speakers, including Jay Shetty!!! Plus, on Friday night, the latest innovative product(s) will be announced. That is when it truly gets exciting!

I need some suggestions for an easy, but fancy meal that I can serve Thursday night. If you have a tried and true dinner, please fork over the details!!! I would appreciate the help, and I’ll be going to the store later today to grab ingredients.

These are great tips ! I never know the proper way to take a photo so I just don’t have hardly any of me at all. I will put these idea’s to good use. As always, I love this outfit.

  4. This is my style. I like it. Can you mix plaid with snake print or animal print?

I love your ideas for a photo shoot! I look so old now, but cancer docs say that that is why they cured me,…so I could grow old and have wrinkles! Aagh! Thank the Lord my 13 yo daughter says “Mom, you just look upper middle aged!” Oh. No! Better than when my husband said 10 years ago “Hey, this is the BEST we are ever gonna look,…from here on out, it’s all downhill”. Um, thanks, I. Do. Not. Need. To. Hear. That…..ugh,…

  6. Tania, you’re always a bright spot to my day.

Easy dinner everyone loves, Swiss chicken. Spray casserole dish with cooking spray. Layer chicken breast, Swiss cheese slices, can of cream of chicken soup diluted with a little milk, boxed cornbread stuffing and drizzle with 1 stick melted butter. Bake at 350 for 1 hour. Serve with a marketplace bag of green beans. Everyone 💕 it!

    1. My favorite quick dinner party dish is similar. For four: lightly brown four boneless chicken breasts in a little butter and put in casserole dish. Layer some marinated artichoke hearts on the chicken. Mix one can cream of mushroom soup with a little of the marinating juice from the jar of artichokes and pour over the chicken. Sprinkle grated Swiss cheese on top. You can prepare to this point and refrigerate a day ahead. When ready to bake, pop in a 375 degree oven and bake about 40-45 minutes. Serve with Uncle Ben’s Brown & Wild rice and a green salad. Recipe easily doubles, triples, or more to serve a big crowd. Love your blog and the photos today were great!

  7. My suggestion for dinner is a spaghetti bake. Easy to put together the throw it in the oven and bake. Leaving time to make a salad and add some nice bread and you’ve got dinner.

I love this sweater! I keeping going to it, I just need to order it.

  8. Julia Gilbert says:

    Gorgeous blue on you!

  9. I had been eyeing that cardigan. After seeing it on you I immediately ordered it. Hope it looks as good on me as it does on you!

  10. You make me laugh, Tania. It looks like you and your DIL had a great time shopping and photo taking. I love my DILs and really miss hanging out with them – you are lucky for sure. Absolutely adore this out fit and it looks amazing on you. Thank you so much for the photo taking tips. I always look so goofy in my casual shots so this might help, I say MIGHT. I may just be that goofy person who never looks quite right. And I have never had issues ordering from Amazon, except maybe I order too much!

  11. Elizabeth says:

Thanks for the tips! Beautiful cardigan and such flattering colors.

  12. Love the sweater and I ordered it!

  13. Meal idea: Stuffed shells. Looks “fancy”, tastes fantastic and actually rather easy to make. The directions are on the box if you buy Ronzoni pasta (maybe other brands as well, but I know this one for sure). Serve with tossed green salad and garlic bread. Great with red wine! Leftovers (or pre-made pan) freeze beautifully.

  14. Love your blogs. Really good info today. Love the cardigan. The blue looks wonderful near your face. Your DIL took great pics.

  15. I love this post and you look great, especially with the beautiful cardigan. The boots are so stylish and really finish off the outfit. Whenever I had to make something for company, I never went wrong with a pasta dish like baked ziti, with a side of meatballs and a salad to go along with that. I worked in food service for many years, and pasta was a popular choice.

  16. Great tips Tania always feel better when I look good in photos 🤣 love your changing photo !!

  17. One of my family’s favorite meals is taco salads. So easy! I just prepare all the fixings and toppings and sit them out like a salad bar and let everyone fix their own. That way they can customize them to their own taste. I usually also serve guacamole, Spanish rice, and refried beans.

  18. “crap” in the background! haha…..thanks for the laugh!

    You keep it so real!

  19. Amy Evans says:

Love this! What have you been doing with your diet? You look fantastic!

  20. Tammy Liechty says:

Thanks for the photo tips. Love your outfit today! What an inspiration you are to me💕

  21. Tania, what is the white v-neck tee you are wearing?

    1. Pat, I knew that someone was going to catch that I didn’t mention that. Lol! It is a v-neck sweater that I bought last year from Target, but it isn’t on their website anymore.

      1. Rosalie frawley says:

you can buy the v neck white tee shirt at Target, universal thread brand, great tee’s.

    2. Lori 💕 says:

Hi Tania! I purchased that same sweater and love it!
Dinner idea: a loaded potato bar with brisket sliders. Cook the potatoes in the crock pot. Prepare all kinds of toppings ie shredded cheddar, sour cream, bacon bits, black olives etc. Buy the pre cooked brisket from Sam’s along with the Hawaiian rolls.
Easy and delish! Have a wonderful day!

    1. That looks delicious, Laurel. I’ll have to find out if they like chicken. If not, then I’ll try this one night for Joe and me later.

  22. Good tips! I always laugh out loud to before shooting. It helps to get you in a good mood! Amazon….. I tried it….. I had earrings ordered 3 months ago… Still don’t have them!

    1. Nancy, I do think that laughing really helps. I’ve ordered thousands of things from Amazon. The only thing that I had an issue with getting was the surgical masks back when the Coronavirus first hit. They kept saying they would ship them, but they finally canceled the order. I think that they couldn’t find them.

      1. Go to the store and get a pork roast and a jar or two of pepperoncini peppers. Buy potato salad. Come home put cut up roast in crockpot, with peppers, juice and all for 4-5 hours on high or 6 on low. Take it out, pull with forks. Pulled pork sandwiches and potato salad. Works for me.
Love this sweater and the colors. Thanks for tips on photos.
