LOOKING MODERN IN CASUAL OR DRESSY STYLES
Since I started working from home, my style has adapted to my lifestyle. I’m drawn to dressier clothing, but I now wear more casual clothing than I ever did before. When I worked outside the home, my casual clothing was usually reserved for the weekends or vacations. It seems like everything has flipped, and my dressier clothing is now reserved for date nights, vacations, or events like church, weddings, showers, reunions, etc.
Casual Clothing is NOT:
- Hand-me-downs that aren’t your style
- Clothing that has stains
- Clothing that no longer fits
- Uncomfortable
What I am trying to say is that you can and should still look stylish, modern, and fashionable even though the style is casual. Clothing that doesn’t fit well, whether casual or dressy, needs to be put away, given away, sold, etc. When your clothing fits you well, it doesn’t matter your style.
This Weekender Shirttail Sweater is one that I would have never given a second look at when I was on the website. I don’t know if you have ever shopped at J.Jill before, but their clothing can look blah online. I will go on there to order, and I get so frustrated at the lack of color, and everything looks boring. However, don’t let the website fool you; their clothing is fantastic, is of excellent quality, fits well, and looks so much better once you wear it. This Vintage Canvas sweater is not my usual style since it doesn’t have a v-neckline, a funky print, or a bright color. But, I love it, and my daughter gave it two thumbs up, which is a rare occasion.
The sweater has an inverted pleat in the back, giving it a relaxed look. It is 100% cotton, very comfortable, and runs true to size. I’m wearing a medium, and the size is perfect.
I love the Chalk color of the Coach Lori Shoulder Bag. Coach handbags have been something I’ve been carrying for over 20 years, and the quality is excellent. They can be an investment, but when you carry them for years, you get your money’s worth from them. Handbags are my weakness; that is where I tend to spend the most money. Shoes aren’t my thing, but give me a good handbag, and I am a happy camper.
Even when I am dressed casually, I try to add accessories. I don’t go overboard, but I usually wear a pair of earrings, my cross necklace, the two Tiffany ball bracelets that were a gift, and sometimes my David Yurman Cable Loop Bracelet. Today I have on the Adeline Hoop Earrings that are a great size for everyday wear.
I bet some of you are thinking, aren’t those jeans stained? Nope, I paid good money to get the look that says I’m a messy painter. Lol! I used to have a pair of blue sweatpants covered in caulk. We built a house, and I caulked all of the windows, doors, etc., and I used my pants to wipe off my finger. I should have saved those sweats and called them fashionable. Hahaha!
These boyfriend jeans won’t appeal to all of you, but they must have appealed to many women because it is almost completely sold out. I’m wearing a size 8, so I think the jeans run true to size.
I ordered these Canvas Pull-On Sneakers in my regular size, and they were too big for me. So, I sent them back and ordered an 8 1/2 instead of my usual size 9, and they fit great. I like pull-on or no-tie sneakers because I’ve become lazy in my later years of life. Lol! There is never a reason that taking one minute to tie shoes is an issue, but I like the convenience of slip-on and go shoes.
If you’ve never shopped at J.Jill, take a look at their New Arrivals. I have several things ordered, but I couldn’t get my widget to work so that I could show you my picks. I guess you’ll just have to wait and be surprised when they get posted on the blog.

Love the sweater!! I don’t wear distressed or painted jeans though lol. I’m just too old for that and can’t make myself buy something that to me is worn out. The purse is great too!!! Bags and shoes are my downfall!!! They last forever if you buy that kind of quality!!
i love the sweater but the color would wash me out Looks great on you!! Maybe they will read your comments and bring it back in more color options.
I am so glad you did a casual outfit. It looks great. Here in Colorado the dress code is casual and sometimes not in a good way. I too have been shopping JJill for years and the clothes have latest serveral years. Thank you for your advice.
Spoke too soon! I received an email from JJill featuring deep pink. Lol
Lol! That made me laugh!
I love J Jill; their pima cotton white tops (assorted styles) are NOT see-thru. It seems that lately they’re offering more color options. One color I do NOT like is that beige/pink/peach noncolor that is often called “blush.”
Join their email list–you’re notified of sales and J Jill really discounts their sale stuff. I never pay full price for anything! BTW, their jewelry is great quality too. I’m a big fan!
LOVE LOVE LOVE your casual outfit! 🌷
Totally my style! However the price tag is not, I can not justify paying $90 for a sweater or a pair of jeans. I will spend $100 for a handbag, my favorite is M KORS LEATHER HANDBAGS OR CROSSBODY. I did purchase one of your last Walmart Jeans you styled with the rip in the knee, I love them! Have worn them multiple times, so maybe I can find a sweater at Kohl’s, Macy’s or Walmart more in my price range.
Happy Easter Tania and have a great vacation with your family also. 🌷
Love this outfit so much, and you are SO RIGHT about JJill. Like you, I’m struggling to rework my casual wardrobe. I’ve retired from the workplace, am home so much more, and it’s harder than I imagined to put together a modern and age-appropriate look and to have a wardrobe that continues to work for me. This is exactly the kind of tips I need! Keep ’em coming! I can’t believe I’m actually looking at such jeans, haha, but they are so cute! Thank you, Tania
That top looks terrific on you! Yes, JJill has wonderful, quality clothing (and accessories)! I do wish they would add a bit more color, but fuchsia is not their style. That does not stop me from finding things in beautiful, soft colors. Love your blog! Happy Easter!!!
Thank you for this blog! You are a breath of fresh air. I have no time to shop, so I really appreciate all your fashion ideas and put together outfits. I can just go to your references and choose things I like. Thank you!

What a fabulous outfit! And I think you look great in it.
Love this outfit! You look cute and classy and hip and casual, all rolled into one. I would wear every bit of this outfit. I’m so sad that the paint-splatter jeans are sold out! (Though I could easily re-create them at home…haha and true!) Your BEST outfit ever, hands down!
This is a great Friday outfit! I have similar pieces already in my closet so you’ve inspired me to go “closet shopping.” I DO love JJill and, thanks to you, am now loving Chico’s. 😀
Such a cute outfit, casual but classy and can change it to dressy with heels. I had to save this to Pinterest, i liked it so much.
Great outfit..I have felt the same way about JJill online..the little booklets that come in the mail always look cute though…I bought a pretty linen shirt in the color Beet…
I love your hair color, it looks great!
