STYLING A DOUBLE BREASTED BLAZER AND GRAY JEANS

Styles don’t always work for us women over 40. But, I am a firm believer that you should always keep an open mind and try lots of different styles and prints. I wasn’t sure I would like to wear a double-breasted blazer because I didn’t want to appear stuffy. But, I have changed my mind, and here is why.

I’ve always loved wearing a blazer, even when I was younger. Blazer season is coming up, and fall and winter are the perfect times of the year to pull out your blazer. Blazers are classy and add a polished look to your outfit, even when worn with jeans. There are several styles of blazers, so you need to experiment to see what style works best for you. Here are a few styles that I wear all of the time.

Single Button Blazer

This is probably the style that I wear the most. Some of my single button blazers are cotton, some are wool, and some are knit, and I love all of them equally. I think that this style is universally flattering for most body types, and here are a few blazers that you might like.

Open-Front Blazer

If you are not a fan of buttons, then the open-front blazer is probably for you. It drapes nicely and is usually a better choice for ladies with large breasts.

Double-Breasted Blazer

A double-breasted blazer is the dressiest of blazers, in my opinion. With the two rows of buttons and the fold-over design, there can be a lot of extra bulk with these blazers, so they can be harder to wear. Since I don’t like to button any blazer, I will let my blazer hand open.

Before you put on a blazer, you have to decide what type of top you will be wearing. Will you be wearing your blazer the whole time, or will you take it off during the day? I like wearing sleeveless tops under blazers, but if you are shedding your blazer during the day, you might not want to go that route.

This entire outfit was from the Express collage that you gurls voted on the other day. This scoop-neck long sleeve thong bodysuit is a layering piece that you can wear with many other items. If you have a hard time keeping your tops tucked in, then a bodysuit is the way to go. However, all bodysuits aren’t created equal, so you might need to try a few before finding a brand that works for you.

I am long-waisted, so I sometimes have a problem finding one that doesn’t feel too short and cuts me in two. If you are petite, then you might have the opposite problem and find that you have way more material in the crotch than you want. I’ve ordered bodysuits before, and I’ve found most of them run very small. So, I ordered a large in this bodysuit, and it is plenty large enough.

I will give Express a big thumbs up when it comes to blazers. I think they are very well made, and I love the large button details. The blazers look expensive, and that is what I look for in my clothing. Let’s face it, we gals over 40 need to look a little more put-together, more expensive, more fashionable than those in their 20s and 30s. They can throw on a paper bag and still look great, so we need to put a little more effort into our looks.

This dark gray double-breasted blazer is a great neutral color. It looks great with jeans, but it will also look great with a skirt or a dress. The dark gray color works with white, navy, yellow, pink, green, purple, black, etc. I could have kept listing colors that work well with gray, but I think that you get the idea.

This blazer is a nice length, and it hits me right below my hips. Usually, I order a large in jackets, coats, and blazers, but I read that the blazer runs large, so I ordered a medium. I think that it fits great, especially since I will not be buttoning it.

I am obsessed with the color of these gray raw-hem jeans! The wash gives a nice worn look, and the fit is very flattering. I’ve gotten a couple of pairs of jeans from Express, and they always seem to be a favorite of mine. These jeans are a bootcut style, so there is a tiny flare at the hem.

I am wearing my usual size 10 in these jeans, but I sent them back and ordered the Long version. I want to wear them will heels and platform boots, and I think they needed to be a tad bit longer. These also come in short lengths, so there is something for everyone.

I know that many of you will pass on these high heel sandals because of the heel height. Feet issues are one of the problems that seem to come with over 40 territories. While I can still wear high heels, I am taking advantage of that since you never know when that will come to a screeching halt. I think these black heels are super sexy and stylish.

Other than the fact that I need a pedicure, these shoes look fantastic! I love the transparent band and the padded footbed, but the 4.5″ heel is a deal-breaker for most women over 40. The heels run true to size, and I am wearing my usual size 9. They also come in a couple of other colors, and the nude version is one that you could wear with anything, so check those out.

The Arden tote is a great statement handbag. I love the different textures of the handbag, and it is large enough to carry almost everything. I love a large handbag, so this is right down my alley. The single strap handle is perfect for throwing over your shoulder, and I love the hobo slouchy style of this bag. This is a Vegan handbag, and it is made from Polyurethane.

My accessories worked perfectly for this outfit. I just received the Britt Gold Beaded hoop earring and bracelet c/o Kendra Scott. When I took these out of the box, I couldn’t believe how well they matched this outfit! Each bead is hand drilled, rounded, and faceted before being woven onto a threaded loom.

I love the gradient-colored Quay sunglasses. Maybe it is just me, but I think that the gradient style is very chic looking. I like the oversized cat-eye shape of the glasses, and I think they are very sleek and modern looking.

Lucy gives this outfit two paws up, and she thinks that gray and black are a wonderful color combination. If I had thrown in a little tan in the look, then she and I would have been twinning. Lol!

  1. Love how sophisticated the dark gray blazer outfit looks! Just love it.

  2. Another one of my favorite outfits of yours! I’ve pinned it! Will be ordering the jeans!

  3. I like today’s combo. When I buy a blazer, should it button, even if I don’t plan to fasten it? In other words, should there be a gap between the front panels , or should they overlap?

    1. Jane, that is a great question. The buttons should be able to button, even if you don’t plan on buttoning them. I actually like them to button, but be very tight. That way, the jacket will still be partially open to show the top underneath.

I just have never been into double breasted blazers…

    1. Me neither, but I must admit that they look very chic and polished.

  5. I ordered the Britt bracelet and earrings, same color, a couple of weeks ago. I was stunned how gorgeous they were when they arrived! Pricey, but worth every cent. They will go with so much.

    1. They really are stunning. And, you are right about them being pricey.

I agree that grey and black look fabulous together. I’m one of those women that have to use the restroom a lot & sometimes very quickly, so I envision a bodysuit being a big challenge. I’ll just keep wearing tops that need to be tucked in 😂.

    1. Ginger, I understand how a bodysuit might be a challenge for some. That is the same issue with a jumpsuit.

      1. I owned a couple of bodysuits in the 60s that snapped at the bottom. Easy to wear.

Wait… “but the 4.5″ heel is a deal-breaker for most women over 40”? If this a blog for women over 50, why are you showing us these heels at all? Love your styling suggestions, but really – model some shoes we all can wear.

    1. Maybe I should have said some instead of most. I show heels because that is what “I” wear. I show flats and give similar options for those who can’t. I feel like I am covering both aspects.

    Love this look!!!

  9. Bodysuits 😱 I remember these from the 70’s…not fondly since I’m long torso. My experience is more like Jeanne Robertson. Look up her video on bodysuits 😂 It looks great and the idea is fabulous if it works on your body

    1. Lol! I love Jeanne Robertson, she is hilarious!
