Is There Dust On Your Bible

The other day, while driving down the road, a country song came on the radio. It was about a young man wanting a special bottle of wine for a date. The gentleman gave him a special bottle and told him that even though it didn’t look like much and was covered in dust, it held something special inside.

Dust on the Bottle is a cute song, and the tune stuck in my head. I found myself humming the song all day long, but I didn’t think much about it. Songs get stuck in my head all the time, sometimes for days at a time.

I went to bed, and later that night, I woke up humming the song, but instead of humming dust on the bottle, I was humming dust on the Bible. When I realized the words had changed, I woke up and started thinking about “why” this had happened. It had to be the Holy Spirit since the words hadn’t changed earlier in the day.

The truth is, there was dust on my Bible. It was sitting on a shelf, and I hadn’t opened it in a while. I have gotten in the habit of using my phone or laptop to look up Bible verses, and I also listen to sermons online. The Bible app is downloaded on my phone, and it is so easy to type in the chapter and verse instead of trying to flip through all the pages of my Bible. I love

I took the Bible off the shelf, wiped off any accumulated dust, and let it fall open. The Bible fell open to Isaiah 61, probably because I had a bookmark on this verse. Earlier this year, I declared this was the year of the Lord’s favor, and that favor was my word of the year. I said I would “start each morning by reading Isaiah 61. I want to be called an Oak of Righteousness and to proclaim the good news of the Lord.” Well, that lasted a couple of weeks before something got in the way.

Isaiah 61:1-2

61 The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn,

As I sat reading the chapter, I started to feel the pages between my fingers. I flipped through the Bible, stopping to read a few verses, and realized why I needed to dust off my physical Bible occasionally. I felt more connected to the Lord holding the Bible in my hands.

There is nothing wrong with using our phones, tablets, etc., to read and look up verses of the Bible. You might still feel connected when using your electronic devices, but I now know I need to grab my Bible to feel that special connection.

To GOD Goes The Glory!

Have A Blessed Day!

  1. Loved this !! I too have let the dust settle on my bible- holding it and turning the pages does fill me with more warmth, feel more connected to Him. Thank you for this reminder!! Enjoy your day- and Merry Christmas!! ❤️🤗

  2. I had always read my Bible “the old fashion way” until about a year a go when we got a new puppy who liked to eat my bible during my devotional time :). I’m afraid that now it has become a habit… my bible app does not give me that same connected feeling that you spoke of. Thank you for the reminder. I think my puppy is grown enough not to eat my bible anymore.

  3. I have to use my bible, as I listen, I want to underline, a special line. Or I make notes, on the sides. I have different bibles, as I use them for my personal studies.. I love his word. and I like Isaiah 61:1-2. Thanks for sharing.

  4. I need to dust mine off!

  5. Tania – Thank you for this post. It inspired me to get my bible out & leave it on my nightstand. You are so right – there is just something about turning those pages.

Thank you for this reminder. It is so easy to keep up with reading plans on my phone but to touch my bible will be a reunion. I will have to look for it.

I done a Woman Devotion at our Church ladies group one time titled dust on the Bible. I started I out with decorating for the Holidays and picking up your Bible and dusting it off was my wrap up. So when I seen this post I thought wow I just done that devotion

  9. Lisa Tharp says:

Yes!! I recently updated my Bible to one that is interactive. But the best part of the Bible is that I carry it to church or can open it up anytime for my devotions. Even though I have Bible apps on all of my electronics, I still love actually carrying and opening my Bible for inspiration. Thank You for inspiring us!!

  10. I feel so much better when I read my Bible. When I don’t I miss the experience and know something good is missing.

  11. I love these words, thank you for a great reminder to fill our souls as well as look our best so that the inside of us is as beautiful as the outside! Thank you for being bold!

  12. Thank you for this excellent message! Fortunately I’m in a weekly Bible study and use my actual Bible so my Bible doesn’t get dusty. But I’ll admit to that happening in the past.
I’m a big reader in general so I have lots of books on my kindle. But for my favorite authors I always buy their actual book. Since God is my absolute favorite author I guess that makes sense to use His actual book.

    1. Yes!!! I love buying the books of your favorite authors, which includes the Lord.

  13. Roeli Lutz (Canadian) says:

PTL – God is faithful to lead us all back to HIS word.

    God Bless you and family.

Thank you ! Good reminder…it’s funny I love the feel of my old Bible 🤷‍♀️. It comforting more the my electronic gadgets , maybe because that’s the way we began learning. Have a blessed week!

    1. Have a blessed week! ❤️❤️❤️

  16. Good point. I do like reading my physical Bible each night before bed. I find I slow down and contemplate the words more than when using my iPad.

  17. So true! There’s something about His Word being in my hands that changes me. Thank you for sharing!

Great reminder. Have a blessed day!

  19. That’s so funny,Tania! I an a huge reader… I won’t read on my tablet. I want to physically hold a book in my hand! Well, guess what? My Bible has dust on it! Thank you for the peaceful reminder! Happy Sunday🙏🙏🙏

    1. Oh, no! Get that dust off right now! Lol!

  20. Thank you so much Tania. This is exactly what I needed to read today. Put my study FIRST! Love love. Have a great week ❤️

    Ina

    1. I’m glad you enjoyed the post.

  22. I do my daily Bible reading and on line Bible study using my Bible. I highlight verses that I want to sink in or ones I am not sure the meaning so I can further study. I also read out loud. A pastor on the radio recommended reading out loud. For me I seem to understand it better than reading it in my head like I used in the past. I love reading and studying the Bible. Thanks for this post.

    1. I’ve been “praying through the Psalms” lately and have found that reading them out loud makes them stay better in my mind. It’s a different kind of experience. I generally read fast and realize that sometimes I don’t remember much of what I read. This helps me to focus on what God is really saying to me.

  23. Nancy Kitzmiller says:

Your Sunday posts are my favorite ones. I look at the week day posts also and enjoy the pretty clothes, information about great deals and of course, funny stories about Joe or your granddaughter. But your encouragement from God and keeping it real about yourself are the best! Thank you😘

  24. Loved this. Just heard a message from a pastor about drifting away from God and what you can do to remember when you first became a follower❤️

  25. Ann Ekberg says:

What a beautiful reminder to “dust off” my Bible. It has become so easy to use the Bible apps out there. They will even read the verses for you through the audio version.
The Holy Spirit is our helper!
Thank you for listening to the Holy Spirit and making this post.

  26. Ginger Hiller says:

Thanks for sharing this Tania! I think that I’m glad that I don’t have the Bible app on my phone, so that I will have cause to open & read the very best book there is.

  27. Sarah Fister says:

I listened to that song for a long time thinking that the words really were “there might be a little dust on the bible,” until my daughter corrected me one day…. I think I like my words better 🙂

    1. Sarah, both version work! There is something special inside.

  28. I’ll be singing Dust on the Bible whenever I hear that song!

  29. Brenda Summersgill says:

I like having a physical Bible for my daily devotions. Most of the time I come across a verse that speaks to me and I like to underline it and write comments in the margin.

  30. Elaine Cray says:

I got away from reading the Bible until I retired last year. Now, I have committed myself to reading my Bible everyday and following a schedule to “Read the Bible in one year”. Thank you for expressing the need to pick up our Bibles and meditate on God’s Word!

  31. Louise Fox says:

Thank you! I always enjoy yoyr Sunday posts!

  32. I love reading my study Bible with the notes and commentary on each page. I read one of the comments of your readers saying how it’s easy to get distracted when you’re reading on your phone. I had to smile because here I sit with my Bible open on my lap and I’m thinking where is my Sunday post from Tania. So I grabbed my phone and searched online for your post. Apparently I can get distracted even with my Bible.
    Love Sunday posts!

    1. Lol! The evil one can distract us no matter what we are doing.

  33. Thank you for the great reminder! We also carry our Bibles to church. We wouldn’t go to work or do a job without our equipment lol 😆 Children wouldn’t go to school without their pencil. I just love this post and you are right nothing like an open Bible in your hands

  34. Thank you for this Tania. I needed it. Have a beautiful day!

  35. Catherine Foster says:

Can you please send me the link to the 3 pack of Amazon leggings? Thank you!

  36. This is a great post, Tania. Another way I feel connected to the Lord is to write out the scripture and then add some thoughts of my own. Our church is currently working on gratitude journals and it is such a good reminder of all we have to be grateful for. Blessings to you Tania.

  37. There’s something about holding my hardback Bible in my hands that appeals to me. Often as I am searching for a particular chapter or verse I come across a note I made in the margin, a verse I underlined or a note I tucked in there. Thanks for reminding us that even in this high tech age that sometimes the old fashioned way still works!

  38. On point message this morning, Tania. It is so easy to get distracted on a device. I always look forward to your Sunday post – it’s usually exactly what I need to hear. Have a great week!

  39. Jenniffer Groski says:

I am going to send this to my son. We have been praying that God will allow him to return home so we can get him into rehab and on a path to recovery after his meeting with his PO on 11/13.
    Thank you!!!

  40. Patt Dyal says:

What a blessing this morning for me. I forwarded the message on to my adult children. A perfect message on this glorious day that God has given us.

  41. Laura Crenshaw says:

I love that song too! And how the words had changed for you. Thanks for the reminder.

  42. Susan Mariotti says:

Amen! The feeling of peace and calm from holding my Bible and reading his words brings you back to it.

  43. Donna Wood says:

I’m the same way, Tania! I use my iPad for everything, even reading the bible. I’m at that point in life where reading printed word requires a change of glasses and I don’t always have the right ones handy….LOL! It’s so easy on the iPad to just increase the font size or brightness to be able to read without squinting to see. When I read your post, I realized that I miss the feel of having my bible in my hands and the reminder of all the notes and highlights I have made in it over the years. Have a great week, my friend!

    1. Donna, there is something different about holding the Bible in your hands.

  44. I, too, use my phone and laptop for devotions and looking up Scripture. Thank you for this reminder to actually read my Bible. Thank you for not being ashamed of the gospel and for these Sunday posts.

  45. Thanks so much for your message today Tania. I need to dust off my Bible as well. Too often I use my phone to read a passage, and then I’m connected to something completely different and my mind is no longer on the Lord. The Bible is where our hearts and minds need to rely upon and ponder. May God give us the grace to remain steadfast in our pursuit of Him in His word!

    1. Jodi, you might have put your finger on it…maybe it is because we can get easily distracted when using our electronic devices.

  46. Love this! ❤️ Reminds me of Little Big Town’s song “Beat Up Bible”

    1. There’s an old Hank Williams Sr. song called Dust on the Bible. I tried to listen to it, but jut couldn’t do it. Lol!

    1. I’m glad you enjoyed the post.

  47. Yep, Holy Spirit at work right there! Great post, I need to do the same thing. Wonderful message on this beautiful Sunday morning, have a blessed day.

    1. There is nothing wrong with using our electronic devices. However, holding the Bible in your hands feels different for some reason.
