Have you ever noticed how some women seem to look casually elegant over 50 without even trying? Everything these women wear looks so polished and put-together, and the end result looks casually elegant. Think of Katherine Hepburn, Sarah Jessica Parker, Julia Roberts, and Jennifer Anniston; these women pull off casual elegance with ease.

What is Casually Elegant?

Casually elegant is all about finding a balance between comfort and sophistication. You want to look put-together but not like you’re trying too hard. It is a blend of casual and formal elements that create a sophisticated yet effortless look. The key is to aim for a look that is both comfortable and stylish, or what’s known as “casually elegant.”

Examples of Dressing Casually Elegant Over 50

Here is an example of pairing a casual button-down shirt with dress pants. This look is casual but still looks polished and put together.

This example of wearing a simple sundress with a denim jacket looks casually elegant while maintaining a relaxed and comfortable look.

What Clothing Do You Need To Dress Casually Elegant Over 50

There are no rules or lists of clothing needed to dress casually elegant. However, I came up with a mix of clothing that is both comfortable and polished. This list of clothing items can help you achieve a casually elegant over 50 look:

Tailored blazers: A well-fitted blazer can add a touch of sophistication to any casual outfit.

Button-down shirts: A crisp, clean button-down shirt can be dressed up or down, depending on the occasion.

Trousers or dress pants: Tailored trousers or dress pants can help to create a polished and put-together look.

Simple sundresses: A simple sundress can be dressed up or down with the right accessories and shoes.

Denim: Denim can be a great option for a casually elegant look, whether it’s a pair of jeans or a denim jacket.

Flats or loafers: Comfortable flats or loafers can add a touch of elegance to a casual outfit.

Classic pumps: A pair of classic pumps can dress up a casual outfit and are perfect for a semi-formal or formal event.

Simple jewelry: Simple but elegant jewelry, such as pearls or a delicate necklace, can add a touch of sophistication to a casual outfit.

A neutral-colored handbag: A neutral-colored handbag can help to elevate a casual outfit and can be paired with many different outfits.

Casually elegant is a personal style, and what might be considered casually elegant for one person might not be for another. The key is to find a balance between comfort and polished appearance that works for you. This is my attempt at dressing casually elegant.

I have incorporated several of the items from the clothing items needed list above. I’m wearing a button-down shirt, white trouser, jeans, simple jewelry, and carrying a neutral handbag. The boyfriend shirt is oversized, but that is the style right now. They look great worn open with a shirt underneath, tied at the waist, tucked using a half-tuck method, and worn loose and oversized.

The drop-shoulder cashmere pullover is so soft, and the neutral color can be worn with almost anything. The pullover is almost out, so I’ll try to find similar options for you.

I’ve become a big fan of Brahmin handbags. They look beautiful, they are high quality, and they are a timeless design. The Alabastor color is perfect for any time of the year, and I can’t wait to carry this bag in the spring and summer. Here are other designs in this color.

Since Brahmin handbags are on the expensive side, here are a few “similar” bags.

Wide-leg pants are huge, and I don’t mean through the legs. They are extremely popular, and I love how they look. Wide Leg pants are great for most women since they balance out the bottom half and this work for everyone except those with narrow shoulders. I’m wearing a size 8 in these jeans, and they fit great.

I’ve had these neutral suede pumps for over a year, and they are still some of my favorites. They look great with everything, and I’ve certainly gotten my monies worth from them. They run true to size, and I’m wearing my usual size 9.

Verse Of The Day

Psalms 40:1-2

I waited patiently for the Lord; he turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.

  1. I like your look, but it would not work for where I live; the Scottish highlands! I need a hooded jacket at all times, as the weather changes so quickly here, a blazer would only be suitable for a wedding or suchlike, most people go to dinner with friends in a fleece and jeans?! I could also not wear any type of thin heel as in your photos, as have to run for the bus sometimes and not suitable in all weathers either. I do think you look amazing, but clothes have to be suited to a particular lifestyle to work; if I lived in a city I might dress like you more.

  2. 💖💖💖This look, Tania. Unfortunately, the sweater is sold out. Thanks so much for showing similar sweaters from other stores

  3. My solution for dressing “casually elegant” is to shop at Talbots. They’re my favorite. I could dress in nothing but Talbots and be perfectly happy! 😀

  4. Hi Tania, love this post’s subject. I always try to pull off this type of look, but never feel successful.
Do you think that casual elegant outfits are usually neutral? That seems to be what you’re showing. When I picture Jennifer Aniston, for one, she always seems to be in neutrals.

I’m with Joe. Lol! Recently assembled a dog crate designed by NASA engineers. Love your look today. White pants are a personal favorite.

  7. Tania, I like that you give items with different prices, so we can find our own budget-friendly items from your blog.

  8. Love these looks! “Casually Elegant” is my favorite style and you’ve nailed it perfectly with these great finds! The suede pumps are gorgeous!

  15. Melissa Palmer says:

I absolutely loved this post. You have given a name to the look I strive for. Also love when you show “affordable options” of items. Thanks for sharing.

  16. Very nice outfit and accessories. I’m in agreement with Joe. I hate to buy something that has the dreaded “U” word. LOL

  17. This is a beautiful look on you, Tania!

  18. Tania I love this look, the neutral color is so classy and you look great!

  19. I like the look. I was interested in the white shirt, however, it is very poorly
reviewed with many ladies complaining about the thin material and wrinkles that won’t even come out when the shirt is ironed. Talbots is not an inexpensive store and I would have expected better. Maybe not a good idea to recommend clothes that have that many negative reviews

  20. LOVE the white pants and off shoulder sweater. One of your best ever!!!

  21. Tania, I do not wear high heels, never could what about wearing pants with booties? I need a chunk heel, just can’t walk in the pointy heels. I’m active and only 60. Any suggestions?

  22. Brahmin is my favorite!! Love the outfit!❤️

  23. Talbots clothing is too expensive for me. However, I love to go to their page and see their “how to wear” ideas. A lot of them are what you wear and suggest. I enjoy your posts.

  24. Love, love love this outfit! My problem with wide leg pants are they are too long with flats. I can’t wear heals any more. But this is a casual elegant outfit I want.

  25. You nailed it! You are the very essence of casually elegant!

  26. Love the colors you chose!

  27. Andrea Pollard says:

I feel like you could wear a potato sack and still look casually elegant. 🙂

  28. This is really a pretty look. I haven’t bought any wide leg pants yet, but most likely will in the spring. Speaking of wide leg pants, my favorite thing to watch on TV is “All Things Great and Small” on PBS. The vintage style clothing is lovely and some of the female characters dress in these great looking wide leg pants. The fit reminds me a bit of some of my high school outfits from the 70’s, before everybody wore jeans every day.

  29. I loved this outfit! I loved the Brahmin bag also, and they are my favorite! I have quite a collection of them now, and they can’t be beat for quality and beauty. I don’t have a round one yet, but I’ve been eyeing it for awhile, and it might be my birthday present to myself!

  30. Love all of the outfits.

  31. I love the neutral tone outfit. Very elegant.

  32. I love the casual elegance! I’m 75 but still like the style, just not sure about the heels anymore? Dianne

  33. I love your outfit! It looks really fresh for February when it is still winter!

  34. Jacque Abell says:

Exactly what I am looking for. The styles i want to get to. Thanks Tanya!

  35. Really like your casual elegant look. I have a friend who dresses like this all the time. My favorite outfit of hers is simple white button up shirt with black pants – all high quality. And, a beautiful cross. I have copied it and paired it with a black leather jacket. While I don’t look as elegant as her, I’m pretty close! I think I’ll try to “copy” you, too.

  36. Linda Burniski says:

Simple. Casual. Classic. Perfect. Love this look. Try to do more often. Looks easy but it is hard to pull off.

  37. I love this casual elegant look! The colors are beautiful!!

  38. Gotta love a classic look. White pants, nice striped blouse, classic pumps, and handbag! You can’t go wrong! Love the choices that you listed.

  39. THIS LOOK IS PROBABLY THE MOST CLASSIC PUT TOGETHER OUTFIT I HAVE SEEN YOU IN. KEEP THIS STYLE!

  40. Linda Dearman says:

Put several items in my shopping bag. Thanks Tania.

  41. FYI…I’m pretty sure you can have Ikea assemble if having it delivered but maybe only in certain locations. But…I’ve assembled everything from IKea myself. 58 and single!
    I always love your look!

  42. So glad I can read your posts now

  43. Ginger Hiller says:

Tania, You look fabulous in that gorgeous outfit! I wish that I could pull off that look, but I cannot wear double layers like that without having a soaking wet neck and midsection. And I cannot wear any type of heel, so I am struggling with how to wear wide legged pants so that I am on trend. Poor Joe! I’m glad that your file cabinet is finally put together. Very seldom are the instructions what they should be.

  44. Not sure I could afford this casual look, but I can replicate. I love this style. Now I’m on the hunt for affordable options. Thanks

  45. I love this look !! However, I’m “not old enough to wear white “. lol

  46. Lisa Clancy says:

How about a post of some casual dresses to wear to baby showers or bridal showers? Want to look on trend but not like an 18-year- old.

  47. Great outfit ideas! Any suggestions for a Caribbean cruise? Also so you think it okay to wear faux leather pants for spring? Thanks in advance for any advice.

  48. Dottie Kinnaman says:

I love, love the casual elegance look! And the outfit you’ve chosen looks truly beautiful on you!

  49. I love this look! Perfectly put together. Also, if I was close enough, I’d come put pieces together for a good price. I’ve always assembled the things at my house and I’ve gotten pretty good at it.

  50. Love your Joe stories. I feel your pain in similar ways- I ordered a ton, a load of gravel for the bed /walkway area, had to share with friends because too much. Then did not learn, ordered mulch delivered, yeah, same thing, measured calculated, got the load, neighbors loved me because my house got mulched, along with 3- yeah 3- neighbors. Needless to say, I am no longer allow to order gravel or mulch. Loving the outfits! I have a light heather green vneck sweater that I have struggled on how to wear- now I can copy your white pants outfit. Have a great week!

  51. Very classy looking. Very well assembled outfit for u. I’m in my 60 and always try to look put together when going out. Love all of the items in this piece today. Always taking screen shots of your outfits they help so much when I’m trying to put together my outfit. Thank u so much.

  74. Theresa Timko says:

Love these looks, especially the wide leg white pants. What’s not to love with wide legs and white, right? Great article.

  75. Tania, do you happen to know what is the most similar pair of old navy skinny curvy jeans because they stopped making them a few years ago and they were my favorites! Thank you!

    1. Shelia, I’m sorry, I don’t. Skinny jeans aren’t popular right now, so there aren’t as many options.

  76. LeeAnn Barnard says:

This sweater is gorgeous. It looks so soft and cozy.

  77. That outfit looks great on you.. it is 100% my style!

  78. Love that outfit on you! Thanks for this post.

  79. Janice Wooldridge says:

Assembly required increases my heart rate !

    1. Lol! It took me a few minutes to figure out what you were talking about!

  80. I love everything about this post! I work at a school and we are casual so I need elegant casual ideas. Sometimes it is so easy to get to casual, I am heavily influence by the younger co-workers sometimes and their casual styles. I am trying to make sure that I am dressing appropriately but fun at the same time. Thank you for all your time and effort helping with ideas!

    1. I’m so glad this look will work for you.

    1. That bag is gorgeous!!!

    1. Mary, that is my problem too!

  83. Jill Buchanan says:

Thank you — love the tips from you!

  84. I like Brahmin so much and have several in different colors and styles. Can’t go wrong with them! The trick is to find them on sale (Macy’s, Brahmin website)!!
    Love the casually elegant style!

  85. I think this outfit is just plain causually stunning! Very Sharp!
    Love Love Love the look!

  86. I love your outfit! Ever last detail! I have never shopped at Talbots, I need to get to that store.

  87. I live all of the looks but as someone else mentioned due to foot issues heels are a pain…literally and figuratively. (I wish it wasn’t the case. 😪) So if you could, please, a few more with sneakers. ❤️

    1. That’s why I always try on shoes before I buy them. I only wear heels for special occasions or for shorter events. I would think a pointy toe flat could be dressed up if you cannot wear heels.
I found some Ann Klein loafers that are so comfortable but like wearing sneakers, and you get the polished look

  88. This is my style to a T!

  89. Tania, you nailed it. The outfit is perfect. People will definitely do a double take. Love it.

  90. love the look! I would love to see more outfits with sneakers! Due to foot problems it’s my shoe almost 100% of the time.
    Thanks in advance
