I think the Hit or Miss segments have become a favorite for everyone. I know that I am enjoying it, and I look forward to it each Wednesday. This is when I like to wear new styles or colors, especially one I think will take some of you out of your comfort zone.

Since I’ve been doing these posts, there have been posts about graphic t-shirts, a shacket, cut-out tops, and even a cardigan that can also be worn as a dress. There isn’t a “one style fits all” when it comes to fashion. We all have different body shapes, different coloration, different heights, and different tastes. That is what makes this post so much fun. You and I might be the same size and similar coloration, but we could like completely different styles, and that’s alright. As I’ve heard many times before, “you do you.” Lol!

I picked this outfit for a Hit or Miss post because of the neck style and the color. My body shape is like a ruler, straight up and down. I don’t have a lot of curves since I hold most of my weight between my shoulders and my hips. It probably doesn’t help that I also have scoliosis since that makes one hip higher than the other. So, I use clothing to balance out my look and give me the illusion of curves.

In this case, I am using this Beautiful Orchid Boatneck Sweater. A boatneck neckline will draw your eye outward because of the opening. This illusion will make my shoulders appear wider than they are and therefore help to create curves. This works great for women with small shoulders or built like a triangle. However, it will not work for those who have broad shoulders and are an inverted triangle.

The orchid color is a color that I love and wear often. However, I’m betting this color will be too bright, too pink, and too showy for a lot of you. I get it…I never used to wear red for those reasons. I didn’t like to draw attention to myself (funny that I now post online for anyone to see), and I thought wearing a bright color would make me more visible. I got over my fear once I wore a red shirt, and not one person even mentioned it. We think people pay attention to us when they don’t even notice. Lol! I am wearing a medium sweater, and it fits great. BTW, the sweater is also available in black.

Here is a behind-the-scenes shot. You can see the sweater’s length, and you can also see how the jeans fit.

My jewelry is some that you’ve seen multiple times. But, remember, I have new ladies joining the blog daily, so I try to mention my jewelry each day. The gold hoop earrings make a huge statement, but they are very lightweight. I was afraid they would be too heavy and hurt my ears, but that was not the case. These are the everyday earrings that I wear around the house, out to eat or shopping. The 18 Kt. Gold Vermeil Cross Necklace is also an everyday piece of jewelry that I rarely take off. I wear this necklace when I sleep and shower, and I’ve never had an issue with the vermeil.

I’m also wearing a Cable Loop Bracelet by David Yurman. This bracelet was a gift, and I love it since it goes with anything. It has both silver and gold in the design, so I wear it no matter what color jewelry I am wearing.

I could have worn the sweater by itself, but adding a third completer piece to the look adds interest. A completer piece can be many different things, but mostly they are cardigans, blazers, vests, and jackets like a moto, denim, bomber, or utility jacket. You might also think of jewelry, belts, handbags, and shoes as completer pieces.

My completer piece is an old navy blazer that I bought from JCPenney about seven or eight years ago. This blazer is a classic style, so I can continue wearing it until it is ragged, faded, or stained. I like this blazer since it has the pinstriped lining that shows when I roll up the cuffs. I doubt I can find the exact blazer, but I’ll see if I can find similar options for you and link them below.

I’m wearing a pair of mid-rise tapered jeans with all the looks. I love how these jeans fit; they are slightly loose but not baggy. Plus, they have a slim-fit leg that tapers toward the ankle. These fit like relaxed skinny jeans, and I like the mixture of the two. I wasn’t sure what size I would wear, so I ordered my usual size 10 and a size 8 also. I ended up liking the size 8 the best, but there wasn’t much difference between the two.

I know that I wear a lot of heels, but some of you have mentioned having feet issues that won’t allow you to wear them. Today, I added an old pair of snakeskin flats that I bought a couple of years ago. I liked adding a neutral print to my outfit to give it some visual interest since the rest of my outfit is solid colors. The print isn’t distracting since it is a neutral palette, but they add interest. Here are some similar options.

I love the color. I’d wear it with black pants for work.

  2. My take, a partial hit! I love the color of the sweater and would wear it, but the boat neck, no. As you mentioned, I have broad shoulders and boat necks are NOT flattering. I don’t like how it goes straight across the neck. Sort of looks like it’s cutting off the neck. Blazer and jeans are great; just a different sweater neck would be what I would do.

    1. The sweater is a great color and style, especially with jeans! And, of course, cute shoes!

  3. Theresa Quinn says:

    Love! You always inspire me!!

  4. It’s a hit!!! Love the entire outfit!

  5. Love a boatneck and the color. The jeans are so so, and definitely not worth $98.

  6. Hi. I like the outfit as a whole. The bright color is perfect for spring. However, I shy away from a boatneck anything. I keep futzing with it to hide my bra strap. 🤦🏻‍♀️ I need a new spring/summer bag. I like your new bag but would rather have trendy and therefore less expensive. Help!

  7. Patti Smith says:

I love this outfit, especially the hot pink sweater. I looked at buying it but it is way to shorty for me. I’m not particularly tall at 5’8” but I’m long waisted and carry all of my weight in my mid-section. Love nut haven’t been able to find one I love. Mid-rise jeans are not good for apple shapes!!!

  8. Kathy Henderson says:

This outfit is a hit. This is my “uniform”. I would tweak the sweater with 3/4 sleeves and maybe a toned down color. I’m pear shaped, do these jeans work for gurls with hips? I do love them. And those hoops earrings. Swoon! Your Bible verse was my Bible verse yesterday. Cool. I knew we could be friends.

  9. I think I have those loafers! I don’t wear them all that much because I’m rarely out of slippers any more. Love the pink boatneck shirt and navy blazer. I can’t love the tapered jeans though, I remember the tapered pleated jeans of the 90s too well. Hee hee!

  10. I would wear everything in this outfit. I am pear shaped so the boatneck and blazer would bring the attention up and out. I like the jeans and the shoes. Definitely a hit!

  11. Crystal Tingle says:

Hit for me. I love pink and navy together. I did think the shirt was a bit pricey to be so plain.

  12. Hit!!! You are wearing my favorite color combination: Bright pink with navy. I have to be careful with the drop-shoulder style of the sweater, since it can emphasize the sloping, forward-turn of my shoulders. I find pink and navy (with mid-wash jeans too!) to be a fresh, flattering combination for my coloring – and yours too, Tania! I also love the striped lining of the blazer. You help me dress better!

  13. This is a definite hit for me! I love the bright fuchsia color and it looks fabulous on you. I couldn’t wear the boatneck though because I do have broad shoulders. I like how the blazer puts a nice finish to the outfit. I never think about rolling up sleeves so it’s nice to see you do that and reminds me to do it also. I love how Lucy Lu is always in the background hanging by her mama!

  14. Definitely a hit! I LOVE that shade of pink and wear it often. I also like the navy blazer as it tones it down a bit. Even though I’m busty, I love a boatneck neckline as it also can emphasize a long neck. 🙂

  15. It’s a HIT for me! Love the the entire outfit, especially the sweater. As always, you look great.

  16. Maribeth Conklin says:

Yes!Yes!Yes!!! Gorgeous color sweater and looks great with the jacket.

  17. Love the color! I also like the Ann Taylor “how to wear it” suggestion of adding a little patterned scarf. Or perhaps add a statement necklace.

  18. Anne Haslam says:

Hit for me. I love the the outfit. Is there a way to disable the pop up to become one of the girls if you’re already subscribed?

  19. Definitely a hit! Love the unexpected snakeskin shoes.

  20. Kathy Fiscus says:

It’s a classic look and a hit. I love brights. I noticed that your bra strap shows in one photo. I like this neckline but that is always a concern and usually happens with this neckline – must be the way that neckline is cut.

  21. Hit. I’m all over the color. I do have issues with boat necks because bra straps typically show. That issue varies by top so I need to try on. Love the blazer look. I have a navy field jacket that I think would be cute over this too.

  22. I would totally wear a boatneck sweater. It looked great with the jacket. Thanks for sharing!

  23. I used to have a couple boatneck tops that I loved. But now that I think about it, I haven’t worn this style for quite a while. I love the color of your top today, so I think I will order it! I love the shoes, jeans and jacket too!!

  24. Hit for me too. Agree with all who said blazer makes this a classic look. As for a boatneck, I have been wearing Talbots boat neck tee for years. Sweater color is wonderful on you.

  25. Melesa Garrison says:

HIT …. I love that color of pink with navy and those colors look great on you. Cute shoes as well.

  26. Ellie Parker says:

Hit for you, looks beautiful! For me it is a no. I am very low chested and high necklines emphasize that. I’ve learned I’m best dressed in v-neck and scoop necklines.

  27. It’s a hit! Love it with the jacket!

  28. At 73, I love a boat neck. It is a bit more interesting than a crew neck, whilst giving coverage to bits that don’t look quite so smooth now. I’m also top heavy and this neckline seems to help balance me out.

  29. Love the color of the top. I think it would be so cute with white or cream pants. Love the shoes but would probably wear a mule flat I am loving those right now.

  30. I love this. I always wear this neck style. Love it.

  31. Sally Bauman says:

That top is totally what I would wear! Love the color and the boatneck, wore them all the time when I was younger. The blazer is something I have tried over the years and just never seemed to be the thing I pulled from my closet. I love the look of them but I guess I always felt they were too structured for my style. I have found that as I have gained so much weight in my middle that I have gone away from the bright colors I used to wear to not attract attention to it.

  32. Hit for me. Looks great on you and I would were all of it.

  33. Hit for me especially those flat loafers.

  34. Love the whole outfit. I have seen you wear the blazer before and think it was a great purchase. My neck is the worst part of me so I don’t wear boat necks but it looks great on you.

  35. This outfit is a hit: a blazer with jeans (relaxed skinny is a flattering fit for most), that bright orchid color, the accessories (jewelry and shoes)! The dresses you posted yesterday had a V neckline which I think is more flattering in general but this boat neck is a nice change. A problem with boat necks for us narrow shouldered ladies is that it almost always requires a strapless bra

  36. Marie Dee says:

First of all, you look fabulous in that shirt! You are really looking sharp, too! I know you’re working hard to get & stay healthy. You are my inspiration! I have a boatneck shirt but it doesn’t look good with a blazer…too much fabric up around the neck for me. I prefer V or Round necks with this body shape!

  37. Love this outfit! A HIT! The boatneck sweater is one of the most flattering sweaters because it helps compensate the width of shoulders which looks more natural.

  38. Amy Tuttle says:

I love the pink sweater! I’m built similarly to you, so boatneck doesn’t always work for me – v-neck tends to look better. But that color is gorgeous! I love the jeans and the shoes too.

  39. Pat McCauley says:

Love the colour but not the boatneck neckline

  40. Carla Pope says:

Love your explanation of the body types that work with a boatneck sweater. That also explains why they are not flattering on me – they take away my curves.

  41. You look so
Cute every day! I love the pink sweater!

  42. Hit for me. Love everything about it.

  43. I like the sweater on all levels and I would wear it with a pair of white jeans and a statement shoe or sandal. Not crazy about the slides or the blazer because I generally don’t feel comfortable in either if those two items. Love the snakeskin though!

  44. Susan Dingmore says:

It’s a hit for me! I can’t do boatnecks but could sub in a crew or v-neck and have a similar effect! Love it!

  45. Love the outfit on you… but the color is too much for me. Also prefer a scoop or v-neck. Those shoes are adorable!

  46. Wendy Perry says:

Hit for sure! Love the entire outfit, especially the sweater color!!

  47. Looks absolutely fabulous on you, Tania, but I could never wear it because of my broad shoulders. Pointy toes on the shoes (love the snakeskin!) also off the table because of foot problems. Rock it while you can!

  48. Tonja Rhule says:

Love the combo pink & blue outfit! I hate snakes so the thought of looking down at snakes on my feet scares the crap out of me. So the shoes are a no for me. 🙂

  49. Love the pink but I would like black instead of navy. I have stopped purchasing any boat neck tops. I always regret them later as I struggle with bra straps showing since I have small shoulders.

  50. Kathy Hayles says:

For me, today’s outfit is a hit! I love boatneck tops! I also love color.

  51. Very pretty. I would wear it and I love the colors and the shoes.

  52. I love the boat neck and I am all about the color…I definitely would wear

  53. This is a Hit. Love the pink

  54. Pamela Salzer says:

Love the outfit and the fuchsia sweater. I feel like with I wear a boatneck neckline my bra straps show. Any suggestions?

  55. Grandma judy says:

I love your outfit! Bright colors are a must for me and especially bright pink in the spring. And it goes so well with navy. The only thing I can’t do is wear boatneck tops. My shoulders are so narrow that my bra straps always show. If you know of any products out there that work to hold your straps I would love to know about them

  56. Julia Gilbert says:

This outfit is definitely a “HIT.”

  57. Mary Ruth Harden says:

Love the colors and addition of the Navy jacket.

  58. Love this outfit. I especially love the navy blazer and jeans. Boatnecks are not my favorite since I find I am constantly checking to be sure bra straps aren’t showing. I don’t feel like it’s too much blue at all. Now if you had added a blue top or blue shoes it would be a different story.

  59. Love the Bright colors, think I would wear with Cream colored jeans.

  60. Susan McCannell says:

Terrific outfit. The flats are a nice addition but I would prefer an almond toe. The sweater is a wonderful color, with an interesting neckline, and although I like 3/4 or longer sleeves, I like the length of these. The completer jacket is definitely something I wear, and i would add a pin or two to the jacket lapel to complete the outfit with those jeans. This is a homerun for me.

  61. A big hit for me .. I love everything about this outfit and would definitely wear it.

  62. It’s a hit! Not especially fond of the blazer because jackets don’t have much “give” and feel restrictive. I’m getting more brave with my wardrobe due to your blog. I live in a small town where there is NO clothes shopping. I’ve bought several things through your site with good success. God bless you for helping women like me!!

  63. This is a hit for me !!!! I can not wear V neck tops due to cleavage issues. So I always look for bust neck tops in solid colors. Love the pink !!!!!

  64. The outfit is great and looks perfect on you. I would wear the top and jacket but with a tighter leg jean.

  65. Hit for me! The blazer just completes the outfit! The top is bright but is not overpowering. Love the shoes and wouldn’t have thought of wearing those with this outfit! Beautiful

  66. This whole outfit is definitely a hit for me. Love the fushia top. Perfect outfit for lunch with friends.

  67. krista rogers says:

I think that sweater is a hit! the only thing I dont like about boat necks is my bra strap showing!!!

  68. Lisa Volkmer says:

This is a hit! I cannot wear that shade of pink, but wish I could! Love it 🌸

  69. Love the color of the top, but how do you keep your bra straps from showing? Strapless bra?

  70. Mary Beth Sheldon says:

LOVE this top, I wear boatnecks very often, it’s my favorite style of neck on tops. I love the color too and it looks so pretty on you!

  71. Love the color and the sleeves of the top. I would have to try it on to see if the muffin top over my jeans would show. Flats are super cute and reminded me I have a pair in my closet! The blazer I am not sure about with the sweater. The sweater doesn’t need the third piece so maybe it would be more seasonable for me. Certainly a hit in my book!

  72. This is a definite hit. Love the outfit. This color looks great on you.

  73. I love the boatneck, the color, but those short sleeves, NO. the whole outfit looks super cute though I must admit. I would also not have chosen the shoes, since I am usually more “matchy” than that but I have been trying to veiw these as nuetrals and have gotten many compliments when I venture out of my comfort zone.

  74. This outfit is a hit with me! The only thing I would need to change because of foot issues is the adorable snake skin flats need to have a more rounded toe. That’s it! I’m a bit shy about wearing bright colors but fuchsia is one I have embraced off and on . I don’t have any item in my current wardrobe in that color, but maybe it’s time again.

  75. Great color but boatneck never works for me as Um er bra straps show! So sad when I love a top and then it’s a boatneck!

  76. Jacqueline J Hopfensperger says:

Love the color of the sweater and the neckline.

  77. Connie R. says:

This is a hit for me! I am not sure if I could wear the sweater because it might be too short on me. Thank you for incorporating flats in this look.

  78. The entire outfit is a hit for me and I would wear it as is. Love the orchid sweater both on it’s own and with the blazer. I also like the length of the jeans and those snakeskin flats are oh so cute!

  79. I absolutely would wear this but maybe with a black blazer…I don’t care for blue with blue jeans…I read another bloggers spring trend predictions and bright colors were the first thing she discussed..hoping you will post what is trending in and out for spring.

  80. Anne-Marie Brunet says:

Love the sweater and the colour!…and the addition of the blazer – great for early spring weather!

  81. Sarah Warfied says:

I love all the pieces, especially the sweater. A little too much blue. White jeans would be a great swap.

  82. Patti McDonald says:

LOVE the color! Boatneck sometimes works for me (busty and 5’1). I like the jeans too. Jacket is a nice way to bring it all together but still looks good without it.

  83. For me boat neck anything is definitely a fashion miss. I have large shoulders to begin with and like the old padded shoulder look of the 80’s that style makes me look like a linebacker

  84. Irene Binyon says:

I LOVE boatneck tops. I think this looks great on you.I’m always on the lookout for boatneck tops. The blazer hits your hips in the perfect area.
