Whether you’re busy running errands, attending a professional meeting, or heading to a party or dinner date, there’s a long skirt or maxi out there for you. Today, we are exploring the world of long skirts and maxis together, including my list of styling tips and some of my favorite long skirts out there!
Looking for comfortable shorter skirts? Check out this post.
Tips for Wearing Long or Maxi Skirts
Choosing the Right Long Skirt for Your Body Type
- A-Line Skirts: An A-line skirt is a type of skirt that is fitted at the waist and gradually widens towards the hem, giving the shape of a capital letter A. This is perfect for balancing out your body’s proportions, and this silhouette is considered universally flattering.
- Maxi Skirts: A maxi skirt is a type of skirt that is long and flows down to the ankles or floor, depending on your height. Maxi skirts come in all sorts of materials, prints, and colors, and they are super versatile since they can be dressed up or down.
- Pleated Skirts: If you’re looking for a way to add some sophistication and movement to your outfit, pleated skirts are perfect for both casual and formal settings.
Styling Tips to Enhance Your Look
- Pair with Fitted Tops: Proportions are important when putting together an outfit with a skirt. I try to avoid big, oversized shirts and stick with a fitted blouse or sweater. This combo accentuates your natural waist and avoids adding bulk.
- Choose Appropriate Footwear: Depending on the occasion, you can rock your skirt with ballet flats or flat sandals for a casual look or heels for added height and elegance.
- Accessorize Wisely: If you feel like the skirt is wearing you instead of the other way around, try adding a statement necklace or a chic scarf to bring attention to your upper half.
Why Wear a Long Skirt Over 50?
- Comfort and Versatility: Long skirts are even more comfortable than a pair of jeans or shorts, in my opinion. You can find them with buttons or zippers, but my favorite style for the ultimate comfort level are the ones with an elastic waist.
- Age-Appropriate Elegance: You gurls know I don’t think our age defines what we should wear, but if you are looking to wear something more modest, a long skirt is the way to go!
- You can wear skirts all year long: Go for lighter fabrics like cotton or linen, which keep you cool in the warmer weather. Opt for heavier materials like wool or velvet to keep warm in the fall and winter. Layering with tights or leggings can also help keep your legs warm!

You look so classy in these skirts! I am thinking having skirts show your ankles make you look not too matronly. Is that a correct assumption?
Gina, I don’t think that showing ankles or not makes any difference. The difference is what you choose to wear. It is the item that can look matronly.
so many skirts to choose front. now to decide.
thank you
Kathy Ambrosi
I’m so sorry you’re feeling bad and hope that cough goes away. We have had the same issue here in several family members.
Sad to feel bad on your birthday.
Long skirts look great on you. I think you look pretty in everything you model.
Love these beautiful skirts for
Summer!
My sister and niece are going on a mission trip to Honduras this summer. I will be sure to pass this along to her. They’ve been looking for some cute skirts. Thanks!
Love the denim skirt!
Hi Tania,
I’ve read your blog for some time, but this is my first time posting a comment. I really appreciated this round up of maxi skirt options. I am petite but love to wear maxi skirts – however, they have to be fairly straight or gently a-line cut with not too much volume, or they overwhelm my frame. I have a pretty well curated wardrobe and don’t need to buy much, but if I see something that really piques my interest, I will get it. The T&B maxi from Nordstrom that you highlighted was a great find for me – I grabbed the last one in my size in the olive floral. Thanks!
Carolyn, I’m glad you decided to comment. I think your comment will help other petite ladies who think they can’t wear maxi skirts.
Thanks, Tania. 🙂 It is tricky to wear a maxi skirt (or dress) when you’re petite. But if you choose one with a cut that doesn’t swamp you, and it actually can make you look tall and quite chic. And it can be super cute also if you throw on a jean jacket with it. 🙂
Beautiful skirts!! Hope you feel better soon!
all the skirts are cute on you – great selection
I’m not much of a long skirt kind of person but these are so pretty I might change my mind!
Finally, I have at least 10 long skirts, I will NOW start wearing. lol
Love them, as you don’t have to wear nylons to cover legs. I do use
self-tanning for my legs and arms.
I will NEVER wear sleeve-less or short sleeve tops, as my arms
need ironing. lol I am 80 years old, and love to dress up everyday.
I will put sleeves in some of my favourite sleeve-less tops. I am a seamstress; no big problem for me to do this.
Love ALL the samples you have shown us today.
Get well soon Tania, God Bless!
Even if summer is here and warm today is 92, I always feel DRESSED when I wear a Maxi skirt
Be careful – I just heard on the morning news there is a covid variant going around. Feel better soon!!
Sounds like my symptoms with COVID in January. hope not.
I really liked both blogs today. I love Maxi skirts but wondered if I could wear one. also lived the ideas about adding Spring things to my home. Will get plow covers to go over the ones I already have. Great idea! 👍
Molly
Beautiful selection!
I’m not really a skirt person, but for those who are, you have shown some beautiful ones.

The black blouse is by CeCe, but the top is sold out since I bought it years ago.
Happy belated birthday Tania.
Absolutely love long skirts!
The denim one is my favorite.
Love all the skirt options. I am always overthinking wearing a maxi skirt since I am on the shorter side at 5’4 but you make it look doable. Thank you.
Tania sorry to hear you’re feeling blah 🤢 hope you’re feeling better soon!
I have to say you look absolutely gorgeous in everything you wear!
Belated birthday wishes 🎉🎊
I’m so sorry you are sick. I had one in February. It was viral so just had to fight it on my own. I drank herbal tea with manuka honey and the usual gargling with salt water. Tylenol helped with the pain. I hope you get better. 🙏The loft skirt is pretty.
Thanks for all the maxi/long skirts ideas. Love the blk/white abstract one.
Beautiful options! Hope you feel better soon!

I love the first skirt— being short— I’m always afraid of the length and dragging the hem???? But it looks great on you!! Hope you feel better— I just hate a summer cold/sore throat.
Tania,
I am petite and I must be careful in selecting skirts for length. I like the first picture. Love blue.

Loving the chiffon floral skirt with the off the shoulder top!
Thanks! I’ve worn that skirt many times.
Hi Tania. I’m 5″2 and love the style of the flounce skirts. I’m petite so they’re a little long. I have the blue eyelit skirt from The Loft but I’m on the fence about keeping it. Any suggestions on how to wear for woman over fifty?
Nicole, if you are Petite, then try wearing a shorter or cropped top. You can also do a full or half tuck and get the same look.
The A-line skirts are my favorite! I am petite so I have to be careful about length and volume. I would like to encourage everyone to leave a comment because Tania truly does give a $50 Amazon gift card away each week 😊
Thanks, Rhonda. I love blessing my wonderful ladies with an Amazon gift card each week.
