Tips for Wearing Long or Maxi Skirts
Choosing the Right Long Skirt for Your Body Type
- A-Line Skirts: An A-line skirt is a type of skirt that is fitted at the waist and gradually widens towards the hem, giving the shape of a capital letter A. This is perfect for balancing out your body’s proportions, and this silhouette is considered universally flattering.
- Maxi Skirts: A maxi skirt is a type of skirt that is long and flows down to the ankles or floor, depending on your height. Maxi skirts come in all sorts of materials, prints, and colors, and they are super versatile since they can be dressed up or down.
- Pleated Skirts: If you’re looking for a way to add some sophistication and movement to your outfit, pleated skirts are perfect for both casual and formal settings.
Styling Tips to Enhance Your Look
- Pair with Fitted Tops: Proportions are important when putting together an outfit with a skirt. I try to avoid big, oversized shirts and stick with a fitted blouse or sweater. This combo accentuates your natural waist and avoids adding bulk.
- Choose Appropriate Footwear: Depending on the occasion, you can rock your skirt with ballet flats or flat sandals for a casual look or heels for added height and elegance.
- Accessorize Wisely: If you feel like the skirt is wearing you instead of the other way around, try adding a statement necklace or a chic scarf to bring attention to your upper half.

Why Wear a Long Skirt Over 50?
- Comfort and Versatility: Long skirts are even more comfortable than a pair of jeans or shorts, in my opinion. You can find them with buttons or zippers, but my favorite style for the ultimate comfort level are the ones with an elastic waist.
- Age-Appropriate Elegance: You gurls know I don’t think our age defines what we should wear, but if you are looking to wear something more modest, a long skirt is the way to go!
- You can wear skirts all year long: Go for lighter fabrics like cotton or linen, which keep you cool in the warmer weather. Opt for heavier materials like wool or velvet to keep warm in the fall and winter. Layering with tights or leggings can also help keep your legs warm!

I love the off the shoulder top. Do you have a link to this navy blue shirt?
Susan, I’m not sure if that top is available any longer. I bought that several years ago. It is by CeCe, and I found it on Nordstrom.
Hope you are feeling better soon!
You look so classy in these skirts! I am thinking having skirts show your ankles make you look not too matronly. Is that a correct assumption?
Gina, I don’t think that showing ankles or not makes any difference. The difference is what you choose to wear. It is the item that can look matronly.
so many skirts to choose front. now to decide.
thank you

Love these beautiful skirts for
Summer!
My sister and niece are going on a mission trip to Honduras this summer. I will be sure to pass this along to her. They’ve been looking for some cute skirts. Thanks!
Love the denim skirt!
Hi Tania,
I’ve read your blog for some time, but this is my first time posting a comment. I really appreciated this round up of maxi skirt options. I am petite but love to wear maxi skirts – however, they have to be fairly straight or gently a-line cut with not too much volume, or they overwhelm my frame. I have a pretty well curated wardrobe and don’t need to buy much, but if I see something that really piques my interest, I will get it. The T&B maxi from Nordstrom that you highlighted was a great find for me – I grabbed the last one in my size in the olive floral. Thanks!
Carolyn, I’m glad you decided to comment. I think your comment will help other petite ladies who think they can’t wear maxi skirts.
Thanks, Tania. 🙂 It is tricky to wear a maxi skirt (or dress) when you’re petite. But if you choose one with a cut that doesn’t swamp you, and it actually can make you look tall and quite chic. And it can be super cute also if you throw on a jean jacket with it. 🙂
Beautiful skirts!! Hope you feel better soon!
