As a woman over 50, I know how important it is to have a wardrobe that is both comfortable and stylish. We all have our style, but there are a few classic fashions women over 50 need to consider having in their closets. These pieces can be mixed and matched to create a variety of looks for different occasions. Since they are classics, you can wear them for a long time.

Fashions Women Over 50 Need – The Classic Little Black Dress (LBD)

Every woman should have at least one LBD in her wardrobe. This classic piece is versatile and can be dressed up or down for many occasions. For a dressed-up look, you could wear your LBD with heels and a statement necklace for a fancy dinner or wedding. For a more casual look, wear it with a cardigan and a pair of flats for church or a casual outing.

Fashions Women Over 50 Need – A Blazer

A blazer is a smart and stylish addition to any outfit. You could wear it with a pair of dress pants or a skirt and a blouse for a professional look at work, or dress it down by pairing it with jeans and a t-shirt for a casual outing. A blazer is a great way to add a touch of sophistication to any outfit and can be worn in any season.

Fashions Women Over 50 Need – A Denim Jacket

Do you have a denim jacket in your closet? I hope that you answered yes to that question because they are so versatile that you can wear them with almost anything. I’ve had denim jackets in my closet that I reach for year after year, and they never seem to go out of style! They are available in so many different styles and colors. Don’t ask me how many denim jackets I own (hint: it is way too many, haha!).

Fashions Women Over 50 Need – A White/Black T-Shirt

I love a white or black T-shirt, especially in the summer. A black tee and jeans are so cute when worn together, and I highly encourage you to try that look sometime. Everyone should own a black, white, gray, and navy T-shirt, and also a couple of brightly colored ones. I love a v-neckline the best for me, but I also have tees in crewneck and scoop neck. A tee is so versatile since you can wear it alone, under a jacket or cardigan, under a vest, and even as pajamas if you are like me.

Fashions Women Over 50 Need – Flattering Jeans

Jeans are a wardrobe staple that every woman over 50 should have. It’s important to find a pair that fits well and flatters your figure, as this will make them a go-to item in your wardrobe. You could wear your jeans with a sweater and a pair of boots for a casual look or dress them up with a blouse, a belt, and a pair of heels for a night out. I’ve recently done two posts on jeans since they are such an important part of our wardrobe: What Are The Best Pairs of Women’s Jeans Under $50, and What Are The Best Jeans For Women Over 50

Fashions Women Over 50 Need – A Button-Up Shirt

A crisp white or blue button-down shirt is a versatile piece that can be dressed up or down and pairs well with just about anything. You could wear a button-up shirt with a pair of dress pants, a blazer, and heels for a professional look at work or pair it with a skirt and sandals for a casual outing. A white or blue button-up shirt is a classic fashion women over 50 should have in their wardrobe.

Fashions Women Over 50 Need – A Classic Skirt

Leopard Print Tank – (Sold Out) | Ponte Midi Skirt (Medium) | Black Long Cardigan (Medium) | Chainlink Bracelet | Large Hoop Earrings | Black Ankle Booties (old) – similar

Whether a pencil skirt or a knee-length A-line, every woman should have a classic skirt in her wardrobe. You could wear a classic skirt with a blouse, a belt, and a pair of heels for a professional look at work, or dress it down with a t-shirt and a pair of sneakers for a casual outing. Skirts are a feminine and stylish option that can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion.

Fashions Women Over 50 Need – Comfortable and Stylish Shoes

It’s important to have a pair of comfortable and stylish shoes. Flats and sneakers are great for everyday wear, while pumps and boots can be dressed up for more formal occasions. When shopping for shoes, it’s important to find a pair that fits well and offers support. This will ensure that you can wear them comfortably for long periods of time. Fashions Women Over 50 Need – A Trench Coat

A trench coat is a stylish and practical outer layer that can be worn in any season. You could wear it with a pair of jeans and a sweater for a casual look or a dress and heels for a more dressed-up occasion like a fancy dinner or a funeral. Trench coats are a classic and timeless piece that every woman should have in her wardrobe.

Fashions Women Over 50 Need – Statement Jewelry

A statement necklace can add color or interest to any outfit. You could wear it with a plain blouse or dress to dress up your look for a night out or a special occasion, or pair it with a sweater and jeans for a casual outing. Statement necklaces are a fun way to accessorize any outfit. However, if you rarely wear necklaces, try a pair of statement hoops instead.

Fashions Women Over 50 Need – A Scarf

Scarves can add a splash of color or pattern to your outfit. You could wear it as a neck scarf, a head scarf, or tied around your bag for a pop of color. Scarves are especially useful in the colder months to keep you warm. There are so many styles of scarves to choose from, so you’re sure to find one that fits your style.

Fashions Women Over 50 Need – A Neutral Colored Handbag

Every woman over 50 should have a neutral handbag that is both functional and stylish. A neutral-colored handbag, like black or brown, can be paired with just about anything and is perfect for everyday use. A bold-colored or statement bag can add a pop of interest to your outfit and is perfect for a special occasion. When shopping for a handbag, it’s important to consider its size and functionality. A larger bag may be more practical for everyday use, while a smaller one may be more suitable for formal occasions.

Croc Embossed Leather Shoulder Bag

In addition to these classic pieces, there are a few other items that every woman over 50 should have in her wardrobe. These include:

Fashions Women Over 50 Need – A Cardigan or Sweater

A cardigan or sweater is a great layering piece that can be worn over a blouse or dress to add warmth and style. I wear sweaters 70% of the time in winter, and I love adding a cardigan to create a slimming effect. You can check out my Winter Sweaters To Add To Your Closet for Women Over 50 to see all the different sweaters available.

Fashions Women Over 50 Need – A Pair of White jeans (boot-cut, flare, or straight-leg)

I wear white jeans all year long. The “you can’t wear jeans after Labor Day” rule no longer exists so you can get more wear from your white jeans. You can pair them with brown or black booties in the winter months, sandals and tunic tops, or a white tank with a crisp navy jacket in warmer months. Some people make the mistake of wearing white panties with white jeans, but you should wear nude underwear so they don’t show through the pants.

Fashions Women Over 50 Need – A Pair of Leggings or Yoga Pants

Leggings and yoga pants are comfortable and versatile pieces that can be dressed up or down. They’re perfect for running errands or working out, but they can also be dressed up with a sweater and boots for a casual outing.

I hope you enjoyed the 15 Fashions Women Over 50 Need In Their Closet. By including these classic pieces and a few other key items in your wardrobe, you’ll have a range of outfits to choose from for any occasion. Remember to wear what makes you feel comfortable and confident, and don’t be afraid to experiment with different styles and combinations to find what works best for you.

  1. Very nice fashion ideas for over 50.. thank you!

  2. My votes for your “best looks” here are the LBD, white blouse, scarf, and white jeans. I did purchase a pair of the Express jeans you wrote about and totally agree regarding an LBD, white blouse, and black and white tees. I for one, however, cannot pull off a jean jacket for the life of me. I’ve tried and have officially given up! As for comfy shoes, have you checked out Rothy’s and Birdies? Love them both! Looking forward to more blogs and scripture from you. Blessings in 2025!

    1. I had to laugh at your “I officially give up” comment. I get it, some items just aren’t meant for everyone.

This is a great blog, wardrobe musts for women over 50! Love all your suggestions! Thank you!

  4. Thank you for the inspiration to move on from all my old fashions. I think I was stuck in a rut and wanted new ideas to move forward as I get older. I like wearing t shirts but find my rolls on my tummy hard to hide. Also, do you recommend wearing a belt with pants and tucking in your shirts?

    1. Kerry, I’m glad you are willing to get out of your comfort zone, but I want you to be confident in how you look. When it comes to wearing a belt or tucking in your shirt, it depends on the outfit. The dressier the look, you need a belt and a tucked shirt. If you are being casual, you can go without a belt, and you can either do a front tuck or wear the top untucked.
