WHY YOU NEED A CAPSULE WARDROBE FOR SPRING
The most requested blog post I get revolves around a capsule wardrobe. Today, since it was too cold to go outside and take photos, I decided to tackle this request and explain exactly why you need a capsule wardrobe for spring. A capsule wardrobe is great when you are limited in space or monetary resources. The whole idea behind a capsule wardrobe is that you can mix and match your items to get more wear from them. Today’s capsule spring wardrobe will have many the same elements that you would have in a capsule wardrobe for any time of the year. The difference will be that I will include a few items that might not be warm enough for the fall and winter months.
The other day on the blog, I did a post about ways to look your best. The post had some of the tips and tricks that I use for finding ways to look better in my clothing. Everybody has problem areas, and figuring out how to dress to minimize those areas will help you feel better about your look. Today’s post is how to look your best with limited clothing.
When it comes to a capsule wardrobe for spring, you will want a lot of basics and a few items that add spice. I bet a lot of you already have some basics in your closet. You need to try them to see if they fit you correctly and see if they are stained or have holes. Things that don’t fit need to be donated or taken to the seamstress, and if they are stained, they need to become patches, pillows, or cleaning rags. If they have holes in them, put them on eBay and charge double what you paid for them. LOL!
A White Button-Down Shirt
A white button-down shirt is a basic that is very versatile. It can be worn with jeans, leggings, skirts, and dresses, under sweaters, and as a cover-up over your bathing suit. The trend for this year seems to be the boyfriend or oversized look. This look is casual and great for wearing with jeans and leggings. If you are wearing one under a sweater or in a corporate setting, you will still want to have a slim-cut shirt on hand.

Jeans
Jeans are timeless and classic, but the style changes on them at warp speed. Some looks are never going out of style, but they may not be the “trend” of the moment. Right now, the trend is moving toward straight-leg jeans, wide-leg jeans, and crop jeans. And all of them should have a relaxed or loose fit. Don’t worry; boot-cut jeans and slim ankle jeans will never completely go out of style. No matter which jeans you choose to wear, make sure they are flattering to your body type. When choosing jeans, remember that darker wash jeans tend to be dressier than lighter wash jeans.

Animal Print Button Up Shirt (I’m wearing a medium)// Red blazer (Sold out except for size 16) // Straight leg Catalina Jeans (I am wearing a size 8) //
A Blazer and Denim Jacket
I am including two items on this one. One is for dressy occasions, and one is for casual style. Because we are looking at a capsule wardrobe, I will show you blazers that you can wear in multiple ways. Solid colors like black, navy, red, gray, and shades of white will be your best options. I would choose a medium or dark-wash denim jacket since that can be dressed up or down.

red pullover sweater (I am wearing a medium) // black faux-leather moto leggings (I’m wearing a size large) // Black twill blazer is sold out (I link to similar ones below) // Kaia fat hoop earrings, the Rue long necklace, and the Maggie bangle bracelet. //
Cranberry v-neck top, (I am wearing a size medium) // navy double-breasted jacket (I’m wearing a size 12) // silk heart-print square scarf // heart hoop earrings // small druzy heart necklace //
red sweater dress (I’m wearing a size medium) // Vince Camuto Jean Jacket // AVI Gold Hoop Earrings // Ryder Statement Necklace //
Shoes
If you are building a capsule wardrobe, you need a pair of black and neutral shoes and a pair of sneakers. Black and neutral shoes can go with anything. I would suggest one pair be a heel (whatever your feet will tolerate), and one a loafer or flats. If you want to be “cheeky,” then make one of them leopard print.
leopard print sweater blazer (limited in size) // KAIA gold hoops // Beckett necklace // link bracelet // Maggie filigree bangle // high-rise skinny ankle jeans from Chicos // shoes are from Dr. Scholls // Vince Camuto Crossbody handbag //
plaid ankle pants (I’m wearing a size 10) // suede kitten heels (I’m wearing a size 9) //
argyle sweater (I’m wearing a medium, and it is on SALE) // small Maggie filigree hoop earrings // Perfect Black Pant by SPANX (I’m wearing a size large) // Pointy Toe block heels //
Navy leggings (I’m wearing a size large) // Sperry sneakers (I’m wearing an 8 1/2) //
T-Shirt
A t-shirt isn’t the most glamorous item, but it is one that can be worn any time of the year. We all need a white tee, preferably one that isn’t see-through. However, I will suggest always wearing a nude color bra with your tee, which will help immensely. I prefer a v-neck or a scoop neck top since those elongate your neck and help you to appear taller.
Cardigan Sweater
You need to look at your wardrobe and decide what color cardigan would best match your existing clothing. I buy the colors that I like, and that way, they always seem to mix and match. If you are not sure what color you need, you can’t go wrong with black, white, and navy, and I suggest at least one or two colorful cardigans that can go with multiple colors.
cotton poplin button-up shirt (I’m wearing a size large) // skinny flare cut of these jeans (I’m wearing a size 10) // Davis multi-strand necklace // My earrings KAIA // bright blue long cardigan (I’m wearing a medium and it is still too big)
turtleneck sweater (I’m wearing a size medium) // waterfall cardigan (I’m wearing a size medium) // dress pants (I’m wearing a size 10)
A Versatile Dress
I did a post about taking one dress and wearing it in multiple ways. That is the goal of a capsule wardrobe. By picking a solid color dress, you can see that it goes with multiple items.
Leopard Print
Fuschia leopard print pullover (I’m wearing a medium)// Joe’s Jeans linked above // chunky heel bootie
animal print scalloped edge camisole (I’m wearing a medium) // denim jacket (I’m wearing a large) // large statement bib necklace //
Gurl’s, there are probably a few things more I should have added, but it is late, and I am tired. Remind me the next time I do one of these posts, that they take WAY longer than a normal blog post. Lol! Joe would insert a whining noise here.

Love this post and glad to know I have most items you have listed.
So many cute ideas.
Have been an email subscriber for 2-3 years.
Love your laid back personality, and the variety of price points and clothes you show. Your personal stories are fabulous!
Wow! I was so overwhelmed by this post! Mind blown! I can see why it was a lot of work. I love what you included, and along the way, I have purchased a quarter of the items you show. What would have been cool is to see everything categorized on a clothes rack; meaning, all tops hung together, all jackets hung together etc. That would take even more work! Ha! I wouldn’t do it either, but for those of us who have unorganized minds craving to be organized, that visual would help!
Have a great weekend Tania! I LOVE your blog!
NYDJ for those who love this brand might find their size on zulily if it’s sold out at the website.
Thanks for the capsule wardrobe post Tania. I think I need to organize my closet this weekend. Your suggestions should help me have a better idea of what to keep and what to get rid of!
Love all the different outfits you have posted here. Gets me inspired to try different things with the clothes I already have with adding a few new pieces
