THIS OR THAT WITH J.JILL AND TALBOTS
Do you have any plans for this weekend? My DIL and I are headed to Asheville, NC, to spend the weekend, and I’m crossing my fingers that the weather stays nice. We don’t have any plans yet, so please let me know if you have suggestions on things to do or places to go. I don’t think we will go to the Biltmore house; we want to explore more of Asheville instead.
I picked two outfits from J.Jill and Talbots for today’s This or That post. These two brands are two of my best sellers, telling me that you love their clothing. If an item is out of your budget, watch for their sales to see if you can grab it. THIS outfit is a take on the Coastal Grandmother vibe. The Signature Soft Swingy V-Neck Tank is from Loft. I love this tank since it is soft, has a deep v-neck that helps to elongate my neck, and doesn’t stick to my lumps and bumps. The tank comes in black and light blue if you don’t need another white tank. I’m wearing a medium, and you can see that I still have lots of room.
I love the soft khaki color of this Pure Jill One-Button Cardi! This is a great neutral color, and this cardigan will be an essential item in your wardrobe. It will become a workhorse for you since it can be worn with so many things for almost the entire year. It is soft, lightweight, and comfortable. I think it runs a tad bit large, so I sized it down to a small, and it fits me great.
I’ve tried a lot of J.Jill clothing, but not their jewelry. So, I picked up the Sand & Shore Short Necklace with a pearlescent mixture of faux and authentic shell beads. I liked the crocheted polyester cord, which reminds me of some of my vintage jewelry. I added three Rivera Stretch Bracelets in the neutral mix. The bracelets will go with dressy or casual items and match almost anything. J.Jill has a special running through May 24th of a BOGO half off on bracelets.
The Easy Linen Crop Pants are great pants for Spring and Summer. I’m wearing the color Sepia even though it looks much darker on the website. The pants are lightweight, airy, and perfect for the warm weather coming this summer. These pants come in a couple of other colors, and all of them would work great for this summer. I’m wearing a medium, but I am going to return them for a small; I think they run big.
Here is a great look at the leg shape of the crop pants. Also, you can see the Canvas Peep-Toe Espadrille Wedge Heels and the Woven Crossbody Small Handbag. I think that a wedge heel is the easiest of heels to wear since they are stable. The Flax color is a great neutral, but these shoes also come in navy. I sized them down to an 8.5, and they fit great. The crossbody bag has a long strap and a shorter gold chain, but I chose to carry the bag as a clutch for this look. I like the versatility of having three different ways to carry the bag, and I like the neutral White1 color. There are many other options to choose from, so have a look to see if you can find one you want. The bag is under $30, so it is a great way that you can add a pop of color to an outfit without spending a lot of money.
Now, it is time to have a look at the THAT outfit. This look has more colors, but it is still a muted look. I stayed with a beige/khaki look on the bottom half but incorporated color near my face.
I LOVE the Tropical Print of this Cotton Button-Front Shirt from Talbots! The shirt is a very lightweight, breathable cotton, and even though it is long-sleeved, you won’t get hot in this shirt. I couldn’t see through the shirt, but you could always add a nude-colored cami if you are worried about that happening. The microfiber cami runs small, so the way I order this item is my usual size 1 if I want it to be a tight fit for layering and a size 2 if I want to wear it without a shirt over it. I’m wearing a size 1 in the tropical print shirt.
The Girlfriend Linen Cardigan is another lightweight item. This cardigan is one you can wear all summer long to cover your arms when you’re wearing a tank top or a camisole. I love this Seaside Blue color, but it also comes in a Coral and White version. I’m wearing a medium, and it fits me great.

I have several straw handbags that are casual looking, but this is my first one that is dressy. The Leather Detail Fram Clutch is GORGEOUS and is plenty roomy enough for me to carry everything I need when I am at an event or on a date night. The handbag is lined, and I love the chain strap with leather padding for your shoulder.
You are going to have to ignore the fit of the Tie-Waist Crop Pants. I always wear an 8 in Talbots bottoms, which I did before losing any weight. So, I’m not sure why I picked up a size 10 (insert eye roll), and they swallow me whole. They are wide-leg crop pants, so they would already be relaxed in the leg region, but they wouldn’t be near this oversized if I had gotten the correct size. The pants have an elastic back, so that I might have worn a 6 instead of my usual size 8.
For you ladies who love the look of espadrille shoes but don’t want a high heel, these Knot Linen Espadrilles might be perfect for you. They still have a small heel, but it is only 1 1/2″ tall, so most of you will find that way more manageable. I love Talbots shoes, and I think they are of great quality. These run TTS, and I’m wearing my usual size 9.
Now, it is time to decide which outfit you like the best. This – the neutral look from J.Jill, or THAT – the look with the colorful top and cardigan. You could like both outfits, or you might not be a fan of either. I guess there are actually four options instead of two.

Both outfits are beautiful on you but I would wear THIS, however, I could see wearing THAT cropped pants with it.
I LOVE the “this” look in neutrals by J. Jill. I’ve been trying to figure out the coastal grandma thing myself, and this outfit nails it! As for something different to do in Asheville, if you haven’t been to Black Mountain it’s a beautiful and charming little town about 15 miles from Asheville. Great little shops and restaurants, music and mountain art. We’ve only been a couple of times but absolutely loved it.
I love the JJill neutral look! And those are my two favorite stores!
I really like both outfits and see them both fitting the coastal grandma look. I do have one little negative comment – why do all the bloggers feel that their clothes must be skin tight? I think loose clothing is obviously more comfortable and older women don’t necessarily look good in clothes hugging their bodies. Just my opinion. You are always adorable in everything you show us.

I love the This outfit the best, although they are both cute! I couldn’t find the linen crop pants in my size online but there were plenty available at my local stores. So I’m heading there tomorrow to purchase them! And the necklace! Love Love Love!!

I am so happy to finally see an influencer show J Jill. It is one of my favourite USA stores. I seldom get to shop there (I live in Canada) and especially so these last few Covid years…but I love to go when I can and have been mystified why more mature bloggers don’t showcase their clothes. I have some wonderful basics from there that I go to so often in my closet.

Although both are good in my opinion, they give off two different looks/vibes. The neutral is more sophisticated while the Talbots appears more casual. Have a three Talbos girlfriend sweaters that I love. Also love the Talbots sandal. However, if I had to choose only one it would be the more sophisticated JJill look.

I very much prefer the “THIS” outfit from JJill on you, though both look good. I think it’s the simplicity of the solid colors combined with the sheen of the necklace that I like most. I grew up just outside of Asheville but, other than the Biltmore Estate and the Grove Park Inn, I don’t have any recommendations because it’s been so long since I lived there. Have a great time!
THIS is more my style. Both outfits look good on you (well, they would if the tie waist pants were a better fit, LOL) My eyes are still adjusting to the wide leg crop length pant, not sure they’ll ever be a style I embrace. Love both J Jill (their sizes seem to always run big) and Loft (especially the Lou & Grey) and I need those knot linen espadrilles from Talbotts! Have fun in Asheville!

Love Asheville!!! They have two great shoe stores you should check out..Tops downtown has an awesome collection of shoes you may not find elsewhere but is pricy. Discount Shoes has great selection at a discounted price as the name suggest but not cheap. I usually buy my Taos, L’Artiste, FLY and etc here.
Sierra Nevada Brewery is gorgeous and has a lunch menu. Several rooftop bars downtown are great for cocktails at sunset. And too many good restaurants to name.

My daughter and I just got back from Asheville and it was wonderful! You’ve got to go to Grove Park Inn for lunch or dinner on The Sunset Terrace, the view is amazing!

We just returned from Asheville and enjoyed a lovely lunch at Sierra Nevada, a brewery not far from the town.
Wow Tania that neutral look from J Jill looks like a catalog photo–Yes and yes! Of course, I judge everything by how it might look on my 5 foot frame, so that “colors” my opinion–no pun intended! The Talbots floral top is lovely on you, but that look would cut me right in two. Thanks for sharing! Plus, Curate is a fabulous tapas restaurant in Asheville. Malaprops bookstore is awesome, and I’m pretty sure Chocolate Fetish is across the street–yum
