There’s nothing better than slipping on a cute dress in the summer…until your thighs decide they’re not getting along. If you’ve ever cut a shopping trip short, dreaded sightseeing on vacation, or started taking suspiciously tiny steps because your thighs were rubbing, you’re definitely not alone.

Thigh chafing happens when skin repeatedly rubs against skin or clothing. Heat and perspiration can make that friction even more irritating, which is why it tends to become much more noticeable during the summer.

Thankfully, there are several ways to help prevent it. The trick is figuring out which solution works best for you. Some women prefer an anti-chafing balm they can swipe on before getting dressed. Others are much more comfortable creating a physical barrier with lightweight shorts. And if perspiration is the bigger issue, a moisture-absorbing powder may help.

I’ve also learned that sometimes the most useful fashion advice isn’t about what makes an outfit prettier. It’s about what makes you comfortable enough to actually wear it.

What Causes Thigh Chafing?

Chafing is basically friction irritating the surface of your skin. Your inner thighs are especially prone to it because they may rub together as you walk, and moisture from heat and perspiration can make matters worse.

You don’t have to be a certain size or shape to deal with thigh chafing, either. If two areas of skin repeatedly rub against each other, irritation can happen.

That’s why most chafing solutions tackle one of two things: reducing friction or reducing moisture.

Once you look at it that way, choosing a product becomes a lot easier.

Option 1: Create a Barrier With Anti-Chafing Sticks and Creams

If you don’t want to wear anything extra under your dress, an anti-chafing stick or cream may be the easiest place to start.

These products leave a thin barrier on the skin so your thighs glide against each other instead of repeatedly rubbing. They’re especially convenient for travel because most are small enough to keep in a purse or suitcase.

One thing I would keep in mind is that these may need to be reapplied during a very long, hot day. I’d rather toss a small stick in my handbag than discover three hours into sightseeing that I should have. Lol.

Body Glide Original Anti-Chafe Balm

Body Glide Original Anti-Chafe Balm is one of the better-known options and applies much like a deodorant stick. It’s designed to create an invisible barrier between areas where skin or clothing rubs.

This would be an easy option to try if you want protection without adding another layer underneath your clothing.

Gold Bond Friction Defense Stick

Gold Bond Friction Defense Stick is another affordable option for areas prone to friction. The stick format also makes it convenient for travel, long shopping days, or vacations when you’ll be walking more than usual.

Megababe Thigh Rescue Anti-Chafe Stick

Megababe Thigh Rescue Anti-Chafe Stick is specifically marketed for thigh chafing and has become a popular option for wearing under dresses and skirts.

If your main complaint is inner-thigh rubbing and you don’t want to wear shorts underneath your dress, this is the type of product I’d consider.

Chamois Butt’r Anti-Chafe Cream

Don’t let the cycling connection scare you off. Chamois Butt’r Anti-Chafe Cream was developed for cyclists dealing with prolonged friction, but the same basic idea applies to walking, traveling, theme parks, and other activities where skin repeatedly rubs.

Since this one is a cream rather than a stick, it may appeal more to someone who prefers spreading the product exactly where she needs it.

Option 2: Prevent Skin-on-Skin Rubbing With Lightweight Shorts

This is probably my favorite solution under dresses because you’re physically keeping your thighs from rubbing together. And before anyone mentions shapewear, that isn’t necessarily what we’re talking about here.

There are plenty of lightweight shorts made simply for coverage and comfort, with no sucking in, smoothing out, holding your breath, or wondering how you’re ever going to get the thing back off.

The Thigh Society Cooling Shorts I Actually Wear

I need to give these Thigh Society Cooling Shorts their own little moment because these are the pair I actually wear, and they make wearing dresses so much easier for me.

These are not shapewear, and that’s exactly why I like them. They aren’t trying to squeeze me into a new zip code. They’re lightweight shorts that give me a barrier against thigh rub along with some extra coverage underneath a dress.

I wear the 7-inch length in M/L, and that length has worked well for me, including under some of my shorter dresses.

I especially appreciate them when I’m traveling because I can walk, sit, climb stairs, and move around without worrying as much about my thighs rubbing together. And there is one other benefit that has nothing to do with chafing.

If you’ve ever worn a dress on a breezy balcony, you already know. The beach will humble you, and so will a surprise gust of wind. Having shorts underneath makes me feel a whole lot less concerned about giving the neighbors an unexpected fashion show.

If you love dresses but tend to avoid them because of thigh rub or you simply want more coverage, these are worth considering. They’re one of those practical things that make clothes work better in real life.

Old Navy High-Waisted Jersey Biker Shorts

You don’t necessarily need specialty slip shorts, either. A simple pair of lightweight bike shorts can accomplish the same basic goal.

The Old Navy High-Waisted Jersey Biker Shorts, 6-Inch give you a shorter inseam that may work well underneath above-the-knee dresses and skirts. The important thing is checking that the hem of the shorts doesn’t show when you sit or walk.

If your thighs tend to rub farther down your legs, a longer inseam may be more comfortable.

The Old Navy High-Waisted Jersey Biker Shorts 3-Pack, 8-Inch gives you extra coverage, and the three-pack could be handy during summer when you may want a clean pair almost every day.

Cooling Slip Shorts

Another option is a pair of Cooling Slip Shorts from Amazon. These are designed to be lightweight underneath dresses while providing enough coverage to keep the thighs separated.

This type of short would make sense for someone who wants less structure than a traditional bike short.

Reamphy Slip Shorts

Reamphy Slip Shorts, also from Amazon, are another affordable favorite. They’re soft, stretchy, and designed specifically to wear under dresses without adding bulk.

Wirarpa Anti-Chafing Underwear Shorts

If you’d rather combine underwear and thigh coverage, the Wirarpa Anti-Chafing Underwear Shorts are another style to consider. This can be especially convenient if you don’t want to wear underwear plus another pair of shorts underneath your dress.

Option 3: Try Thigh Bands If You Don’t Want Another Layer

Some women cannot stand the thought of another layer of fabric when it’s 90 degrees outside, and I completely understand that.

Bandelettes Original Anti-Chafing Thigh Bands

bandelettes original anti-chafing thigh bands

Bandelettes Original Anti-Chafing Thigh Bands cover only the portion of your thighs that rub together rather than covering your entire upper leg. That gives you the physical barrier you get from shorts without as much fabric.

The tradeoff is that fit becomes especially important. You want a band that stays securely in place without digging into your leg, so I’d pay close attention to the manufacturer’s sizing instructions.

Option 4: Control Moisture With Body Powder

Sometimes friction isn’t the whole problem. Heat and perspiration can leave the skin damp, which may make rubbing feel even worse.

A moisture-absorbing powder can be helpful for women who notice their chafing is primarily a hot-weather problem. I would use powder on intact skin rather than skin that’s already raw or badly irritated, and I’d follow the directions on the particular product you’re using.

Anti Monkey Butt Lady Powder

I mean…that’s certainly a name. Lol. Anti Monkey Butt Lady Powder is designed to absorb moisture in areas prone to friction.

It might be especially useful during hot weather or on days when you know you’re going to be outside for hours.

Happy Curves Comfort Powder

Happy Curves Comfort Powder is another powder designed for areas where heat, moisture, and friction are an issue. If you’re sensitive to fragrance or other ingredients, always check the ingredient list before using any new body product, especially on easily irritated skin.

Which Chafing Solution Should You Choose?

Here’s how I would narrow it down.

  • If you want the least amount of clothing possible: Try an anti-chafing stick or cream.
  • If your thighs rub together a lot when you walk: Lightweight slip shorts create the most straightforward physical barrier.
  • If you want chafing protection plus modesty under dresses: This is where I really like my Thigh Society Cooling Shorts.
  • If you hate wearing shorts underneath dresses: Thigh bands may give you enough coverage without the extra layer.
  • If perspiration seems to make everything worse: A moisture-absorbing powder may be worth trying.

And you don’t necessarily have to pick only one method. On a long sightseeing day, for example, someone might prefer lightweight shorts along with an anti-chafing product on another area that tends to rub.

The goal isn’t to use more products. It’s to figure out the simplest solution that lets you forget about chafing and enjoy your day.

What If Your Thighs Are Already Chafed?

Once skin is irritated, I wouldn’t keep piling anti-chafing products onto it and hoping for the best.

Gently clean the area, pat rather than rub it dry, and avoid whatever is causing more friction while it heals. A simple skin protectant such as petroleum jelly can also help reduce friction.

If the area becomes increasingly painful, swollen, develops open sores or drainage, appears infected, or simply isn’t improving, that’s when I’d stop treating it as ordinary chafing and check with a healthcare professional.

My Best Tip for Preventing Thigh Chafing

Don’t wait until you’re halfway through the day to discover that your thighs are going to be a problem.

If you’re wearing a dress on vacation, going to an outdoor event, shopping all afternoon, or doing a lot of walking, think about chafing before you leave home.

For me, putting on my Thigh Society Cooling Shorts is easy because I don’t have to think about reapplying anything later. Someone else may be perfectly happy with a swipe of anti-chafing balm.

Neither is necessarily better. The best chafing solution is the one you’ll actually use, and that keeps you comfortable.

Because life’s too short to leave a cute dress hanging in the closet just because your thighs have declared war on each other.

  3. Thank you Tania for this post about thigh chafing which has kept me from wearing cute summer dresses for years. Even at my thinnest at 100 pounds as a young girl my thighs still chased and caused me grief so I turned a blind eye to dresses. I am so grateful now as an adult to ser all these options of which I am goung to try because I love a good dress that twirls, and I am a stylist in a western boutique so we always have lots of dresses that I’d love to wear with my favorite boots🩷

Found it 🙂 I walk early in the morning so I wear yoga shorts and they are great under dresses. If it keeps my thighs from chafing while I walk then it’s a go to for under dresses in the hot Florida summers. I have also bought so lighter weight shorts for dresses also. They also kinda keep you sucked in, in all the right places too.
