The Dresses I’d Choose If I Could Only Pack Three

Gurls, I am not what you would call a “light packer.” I always have good intentions. I tell myself I’m only taking what I need, and the next thing you know, I’ve packed three dresses for “just in case,” two extra pairs of shoes, and a backup outfit for a made-up event that is not even on the calendar.

Joe would probably say I pack like I’m leaving the country instead of going away for a weekend. Lol!

But I started thinking, what if I really had to narrow it down? What if I could only pack three dresses for summer? Not twelve. Not the one that comes home still folded with the tag on it. Just three.

I’d want one dress for dressier dinners, church, showers, or events. Then I’d want two easy dresses for everyday things, lunch with friends, shopping, errands, sightseeing, or vacation days when I want to look cute but not wrestle with my outfit.

Today, I’m sharing the three summer dress styles I’d choose, why they work, how they fit, and where I’d wear them.

Why These Three Dresses Made the Cut

When I’m choosing summer dresses for women over 50, I’m looking for a few things. They need to be comfortable, flattering, and easy to style. They also need to pass the real-life test.

Can I sit down in it?
Can I walk without tugging at it?
Does it show every lump and bump?
Can I wear regular undergarments with it?
Will it work for more than one occasion?

That last one is big. I want dresses that can be worn several different ways, especially if I’m packing for a trip. A dress has to earn its space in the suitcase, because my shoes are already fighting for room in there.

The Easy Vacation Dress

This tank dress is exactly the kind I like for warm-weather trips. It has a relaxed, knee-length sheath fit, so it skims instead of clings. That is a very important distinction, especially in July when the humidity is out here acting like it pays rent.

This is the dress I’d wear for sightseeing, lunch by the water, shopping, errands, or a casual dinner on vacation. It feels relaxed, but it still looks like you meant to get dressed. There’s a difference between easy and sloppy, and this one lands on the right side.

I’m wearing the Navy Fun Fish Print Tank Dress in a medium, and the fit feels comfortable and easy. The fish print is fun and very on-trend! If you are worried the print is “too much,” the navy background keeps it from feeling too loud. I like that it has personality without making me look like I’m headed to a theme party.

I styled it with the Bone Italian Leather Handwoven Pouch Crossbody Clutch from Quince. This is a great neutral color because it goes with almost everything. It holds the essentials I actually need, which is plenty for me. I do not need to carry three lipsticks, receipts from 2019, and a granola bar that has seen better days. Although let’s be honest, I probably still do.

This clutch is also available in other colors, but the bone shade is such a good summer neutral. It keeps the outfit light and fresh, and it works with navy, white, denim, black, tan, and brighter colors.

The Solid Colored Dress I’ll Wear Again and Again

This would be one of my everyday summer dresses. I’d wear it for lunch with friends, shopping, errands, casual get-togethers, or on vacation when I want to look nice without spending twenty minutes figuring out an outfit.

The Cold Shadow Solid Tank Dress in a medium, is soft and wearable, and it is a nice change from black. I wanted to show this one because a solid dress is one of the hardest-working pieces you can pack.

I know black is easy, but in the summer, I usually want something lighter and fresher. This color still gives you that same simple, versatile base without feeling dark.

I styled it with the Urban Expressions Lani Raffia Clutch and the Strappy Ornamented Flat Sandals, which fit true to size. The raffia clutch gives the outfit a pretty summer texture, and the sandals dress it up a little while still staying flat and practical.

How I’d Layer This Dress

One reason I’d pack this solid dress is because it would be easy to layer. I could wear it with a lightweight cardigan or jacket, especially in cooler restaurants.

You know exactly what I mean. It is blazing hot outside, then you walk into a restaurant and suddenly feel like you’re sitting inside a meat locker. I don’t know who controls those thermostats, but I’d like a word.

A cardigan also gives you arm coverage when you want it. Some days I don’t care one bit about showing my arms, and some days I want a little layer. Both are fine. The trick is having options that don’t make the outfit feel heavy.

I’d look for a lightweight cardigan in white, ivory, navy, soft blue, or even a neutral tan. A cropped or slightly shorter cardigan would probably work best with this knee-length dress because it keeps the proportions balanced.

The Dressier One I’d Pack for Dinner or an Event

The third dress is the one I’d pack for dressier dinners, church, a shower, or a summer event. This shirt dress has a more polished look than the tank dresses. The stripes are classic, the midi length feels dressier, and the cinched waist gives it shape.

This dress feels like the one I’d reach for when I want to look a little more finished. It is not fussy, but it has presence. That is why it would be my dressier pick of the three.

The midi length also helps it feel more elevated. I like a knee-length dress for casual days, but a midi dress often feels a little more appropriate for dinners, showers, church, or events.

I really like this Cinched Waist Midi Shirt Dress. It has that crisp, summer look that feels pulled together without being stiff.

I’m wearing a large, but this dress is slightly too tight on me through the waist. That is where I carry most of my weight, so even though I’m wearing a medium in the previous dresses, I would feel more comfortable sizing up to an extra-large in this one.

And gurls, do not let the size or number on the tag boss you around. Nobody sees the tag but you, and if they do, they are standing entirely too close. The goal is not to squeeze into the smallest size possible. The goal is to wear clothing that lets you breathe, sit, move, eat dinner, and feel good.

I’ve said this before, but sizing is all over the place. A medium in one dress, a large in another, and an extra-large in a third does not mean anything is wrong with your body. It means clothing brands need to have a meeting and get their act together.

Once I added the Lined Classic Single Button Blazer, the whole outfit changed. It went from a pretty shirt dress to a more polished outfit that I’d wear to dinner, church, a meeting, or a nicer event.

I added the Bowler Bag, and I love how the structure of the bag plays with the classic feel of the striped dress and blazer. It gives the whole outfit a more finished look.

I’m wearing the Single Button Blazer in a medium, and it fits great. The color also works beautifully with the stripes in the dress, which makes the outfit feel cohesive. I love it when pieces look like they were made to go together, especially when I didn’t have to spend all afternoon figuring it out.

A blazer is one of my favorite pieces to pack because it can do double duty. You can wear it over a dress, but you can also wear it with a tee and jeans, a skirt, or a simple tank and trousers. It instantly elevates an outfit, and that makes it worth the suitcase space.

The Three Dress Formula I’d Use for Packing

If I were packing only three summer dresses, this is the formula I’d follow.
First, I’d pack one casual printed dress. That gives you something fun for vacation days, sightseeing, shopping, or casual dinners.

Second, I’d pack one solid everyday dress. This is the one you can change the most with accessories and layers.

Third, I’d pack one dressier dress. This should work for dinner, church, events, or any occasion where you want to look a little more put-together.
That is the kind of packing plan that makes sense to me. You are not packing three dresses that all do the same thing. Each one has a job, and each one can be styled more than one way.

What I’d Look For Before Buying

Before buying any summer dress, I always pay attention to fabric, fit, length, and styling options. A dress can look beautiful online, but if it clings in the wrong place or needs special undergarments, it may not get worn.

For women over 50, I think the best summer dresses are the ones that make getting dressed easier. They don’t have to hide your body, but they should work with your body. That means enough room through the waist, a comfortable armhole, a length you feel good wearing, and fabric that doesn’t show every little wrinkle or line.

Also, think about how many ways you can wear it. Can you add a cardigan? Can you wear it with flat sandals? Can you dress it up with a clutch? Can it go from lunch to dinner? Those are the dresses that earn their keep.

My Final Thoughts on Packing Summer Dresses

The biggest thing I want you to remember is this: choose dresses that make you feel comfortable and confident. Do not get hung up on the size tag, and do not buy something just because it looks cute on a hanger. The dress needs to work for your real life, your real body, and your real calendar.
That is what makes a dress worth packing.
