The Light Of The World Brings Hope And Guidance
Every night, right before going to bed, I take my little dog, Lucy, out to potty. It is pitch black outside, and on a good night, I can see the moon and stars shining. I always take a powerful flashlight out with us to make sure there aren’t any other animals around. The other night, as I shined the light into the yard, I was amazed at all the particles floating in the air that I couldn’t see without the light.
There were so many tiny particles highlighted in the beam of light that I actually covered my mouth and nose with my shirt. What were those particles? What was I breathing?
A lot of people had been mowing their yards that day, so I wondered if small pieces of grass were floating around. Occasionally, when I go outside, I can see soot floating in the air where someone has been burning leaves, etc. It can look like falling snow, although this “snow” is usually gray.
When I walked into the house, I continued to shine the light through the air to see if there were as many particles inside. Thankfully, there was only a small amount, so I wasn’t worried.
Later the next day, I dropped the back of my earring and didn’t see where it landed. I was in my bedroom, and after searching and not finding it, I went to grab the flashlight. Joe and I figured out a long time ago that shining a flashlight across your floor will illuminate everything in its path. Warning: this will show all the dust bunnies that are residing unnoticed, but that’s okay; we all have them.
Sure enough, once I put the light down on the floor and looked around, I found the missing back of my earring. I also found a sock that had gotten kicked under the dresser and a stuffed toy mouse that my cat had put under my bed.
This morning, I was thinking about how Jesus is the Light of the world. He brings hope and guidance to our lives. It is like walking into a dark room and turning on the light; everything that was once hidden from our view is now visible.
John 8:12 NIV
12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
I’ll be honest; I don’t like going outside after dark with Lucy. There could be things hidden in the dark that mean us harm, or I could stumble and fall because of the darkness. Having my flashlight makes me feel safer than being out there by myself.
Jesus does the same for us every day. With Jesus, we can see where we’re going, like having a flashlight. He helps us understand right from wrong and shows us the best path to take.
His light isn’t just something to look at. It changes things. It makes scary, dark places feel safe and helps us find our way when we’re lost. Jesus being the light means He can make our lives brighter, better, and safer.
Psalm 27:1 NIV
1 The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid?
With Jesus by my side, showing me the way, why should I be afraid?
Jesus’ light doesn’t just show us the path we are on; it also shows us the “dust bunnies” we have hidden from others’ view. He brings our flaws out into the open and encourages us to change. He is the gardener who is pruning away at our dead branches and dying leaves. Without his pruning, we can never truly flourish and grow.
We may not always like what we see in the light, but it is usually for our benefit. I know I won’t be venturing out into the dark without a light source, and I don’t want to go through life without the Light of Jesus.
To GOD Goes The Glory!
