I get asked a lot about a capsule or essential must-have items for each season. Every season has certain items that you need to make your wardrobe complete. Most of these items will be things that you can wear year after year with a tweak here and there. Boots are always going to be a fall and winter item, but the style of the heel or the toe might change slightly. A good coat or puffer jacket will be something that you will almost always need unless you live in a warm climate. So, today, let’s see what TEN fall essentials you are going to need/want to make your closet complete.
While I am already shopping for fall, there is also a summer HUGE After Party Sale happening on Lilly Pulitzer today and tomorrow. I’ve already spent my limit, so you better grab yours while the sizes are still available.
Knee Boots for Fall
Since I mentioned boots, let’s start there. Knee boots are one of my most favorite items for fall. I love tucking my skinny jeans into them and wearing them with a big chunky sweater. They are also super cute when worn with a dress or skirt, as I did in this post in 2019. I have knee boots in several colors and styles. I think that you should have a black pair and a brown pair, but it is up to you which color brown you choose. It seems like I gravitate toward this pale brown color, or caramel when I am selecting a pair of brown boots. You will also need to decide what type of heel works the best for you. Chunky heels are trending right now, but riding boots are always in style, so you can’t go wrong with those.
Ankle Boots for Fall
I would build on to my house to add a closet just for ankle booties. Ankle boots are so stinking cute, and I love them all. I am like Joe is by his newfound love for Skechers; I want every pair that I own in multiple colors. Lol!!! When the painters saw my shoe wall, they were like, “wow!” I hated to tell them that I hadn’t even gotten my fall and winter shoes out of storage yet. Lol!!! Here is the post from the photo above.
For fall and winter, bootcut (or straight-leg) and skinny jeans are my two favorite choices. I love the bootcut/straight-leg jeans because they help to balance out your body, and your boots look wonderful when worn with these jeans. But, you can’t beat a skinny jean if you want to tuck your jeans inside your boots. Boot cut jeans can be bulky, and it is a struggle to get boots zipped when those are tucked inside your jeans. Quilted or Puffer Vests
A padded, quilted, or puffer vest is a fall essential. These vests keep your core warm without adding bulk to your arms. These are perfect for early fall when you need extra warmth, but a coat is too heavy. I love a vest since it can easily be removed if the temperatures warm up, and they add some interest to your outfit. Here is the link to the post above.

Everyone Needs A Winter Coat
If the temperature drops or snow starts to fall, you will be glad that you have a warm winter coat. Joe is the coat person in our family, and he has a crazy amount of coats. I don’t like to wear coats since I am usually only walking a few feet to the car, and then only a few feet from the vehicle to the place that I am going. BUT, I have a coat in the car with me at all times, even if I am not wearing it. You never know when your car might break down, and you might have to walk. Plus, I enjoyed playing with the grandchildren outside in the snow last year, so I was glad that I had a long warm coat to wear. Here is the link to the post above.
A Moto Jacket Takes 10 Years Off Your Age
A suede or leather moto jacket is the perfect fall accessory item. This fashionable jacket updates any outfit, and it is ideal for a fall football game or even a date night. Adding a moto jacket to your wardrobe takes TEN years off of your age, so what are you waiting for??? Here is the link to the post above.
Cashmere To Feel Like A Princess
If it wasn’t for the price tag, my fall and winter wardrobe would consist of cashmere from top to bottom. I love the softness of cashmere, and it makes me feel like a princess when I am wearing it. I always try to add one or two cashmere pieces to my growing collection, and I usually pick solid and classic pieces so that I can wear them year after year. Here is the link to the post above.
I don’t like constricting necks, but I love a turtleneck. That is why I love a chunky turtleneck sweater. A chunky turtleneck can be worn by itself, or you can choose a thinner material and wear it as a layering item. There are lots of different “neck” options also, such as a mock-neck, cowl-neck, or funnel-neck. Either option that you choose, this is an essential fall item. Here is the link to the post above.
A Classic Denim Jacket
A denim jacket is a classic fall wardrobe staple! This is a very versatile item, and you will find a ton of ways to wear this jacket. I love wearing it with a dress, and it looks fabulous when worn with leggings or corduroy pants. The denim on denim look is coming back in style, but that is a look that is harder to pull off. If you are going to try that look, then I suggest that the two denim items be in two different colors. Here is the link to the post above.
Plaid Is The Pattern For Fall
Fall is the time of the year to pull out your plaid flannel shirts. Buffalo plaid has been trending for several years, but Joe has always been partial to a Blackwatch plaid. If you don’t care for a plaid shirt, you can always add a pair of plaid leggings or pants to your wardrobe. Also, a plaid blanket scarf is the perfect fall accessory, and that is an affordable option. Here is the link to the post above.
Accessories Are The Spice Of Your Wardrobe
Accessories are the spice of your wardrobe. Usually, accessories are affordable and add a PUNCH to your look. Some accessories that I love adding to my fall wardrobe is scarves, handbags, and hats. The jewelry and bag might be costly; the scarves and hats are super affordable. Here is the link to the post above.
