I get asked a lot about a Fall Capsule or Fall Essential must-have items for each season, so I updated this post for 2022. Every season has certain items that you need to make your wardrobe complete. Most of these items will be things that you can wear year after year with a tweak here and there. Boots are always going to be a fall and winter item, but the style of the heel or the toe might change slightly. A good coat or puffer jacket will be something that you will almost always need unless you live in a warm climate. So, today, let’s see what the Fall Essentials you are going to need/want to make your closet complete.

Boots for Fall

Whether you like knee or ankle boots, boots are a Fall Essential. Knee boots are one of my most favorite items for fall. because I love tucking my jeans into them and wearing them with a big chunky sweater. Knee boots are also super cute when worn with a dress or skirt, as I did in this post in 2019. Boots are always a fall staple, but this year the shaft of the boot is higher, and over-the-knee boots are trying to make a comeback. Western-inspired boots are trending, and white and ivory are another big trend.

Choose the type of boot that works for you and your lifestyle. If you live in a cold climate that gets a lot of rain or snow, then choose a warm boot that is water resistant or waterproof. Many of you still work and need a dressier option, so choose a dress boot that works for dresses, pants, and also with jeans.

Fall Jeans

When it comes to fall essentials, jeans are at the top of the list. For fall and winter, flare, bootcut (or straight-leg), and skinny jeans are my favorite choices. Wide-leg jeans are trending, and I have a couple of pairs, but I’m not going overboard with them since they are a trend. I love bootcut/straight-leg jeans because they help to balance out your body, and your boots look wonderful when worn with these jeans. And, even though skinny jeans are not a current trend, you can’t beat them if you want to tuck your jeans inside your boots. Bootcut jeans can be bulky, and it is a struggle to get boots zipped when those are tucked inside your jeans.

Everyone Needs A Winter Coat

If the temperature drops or snow starts to fall, you will be glad that you have a warm winter coat. Joe is the coat person in our family, and he has a crazy amount of coats. I don’t like to wear coats since I am usually only walking a few feet to the car and then only a few feet from the vehicle to the place that I am going. BUT, I have a coat in the car with me at all times, even if I am not wearing it. You never know when your car might break down, and you might have to walk. Plus, I enjoyed playing in the snow, so I always have a long warm coat to wear.

A Moto/Bomber Jacket Takes 10 Years Off Your Age

I love a moto jacket, and this year, the bomber jacket is a big trend. A suede/leather moto jacket is the perfect fall accessory item. This fashionable jacket updates any outfit, and it is ideal for a fall football game or even a date night. Adding a moto jacket to your wardrobe takes TEN years off of your age, so what are you waiting for???

Cashmere To Feel Like A Princess

Cashmere might not be an essential fall item, but I sure do love it!!! If it wasn’t for the price tag, my fall and winter wardrobe would consist of cashmere from top to bottom. I love the softness of cashmere, and it makes me feel like a princess when I am wearing it. I always try to add one or two cashmere pieces to my growing collection, and I usually pick solid and classic pieces so that I can wear them year after year.

A Classic Denim Jacket

A denim jacket is a classic fall wardrobe staple! This is a very versatile item, and you will find a ton of ways to wear this jacket. I love wearing it with a dress, and it looks fabulous when worn with leggings or corduroy pants. A denim jacket comes in lots of different styles, including cropped and frayed versions. The denim on denim look is coming back in style, but that is a look that is harder to pull off. If you are going to try that look, then I suggest that the two denim items be in two different colors.

Plaid Is The Pattern For Fall

Fall is the time of the year to pull out your plaid. Buffalo plaid has been trending for several years, but Joe has always been partial to a Blackwatch plaid. If you don’t care for a plaid shirt, you can always add a pair of plaid leggings or pants to your wardrobe. Also, a plaid blanket scarf is the perfect fall accessory, and that is an affordable option.

Accessories Are The Spice Of Your Wardrobe

Accessories are the spice of your wardrobe. Usually, accessories are affordable and add a PUNCH to your look. Some accessories that I love adding to my fall wardrobe are scarves, handbags, and hats. The jewelry and bag might be costly; the scarves and hats are super affordable.

WHEW! I hope that you liked this fall essentials rundown. There are way more things, but my fingers got tired of typing. Lol!

  1. Hi, Tania! I loved this post, and can only imagine how long it took you to put it all together!!! THANK you! I finally ordered the Wrangler jean jacket from Amazon. It arrived today, and just tried it on – perfect fit in a Medium for me! I love it, and I especially love the low price of that jean jacket compared to the jean jackets of some of my favorite (but more expensive) brands. Thanks for saving us money (this time)! 🙂

  2. Still would appreciate receiving info on hair color. I know others have inquired. I have several times.

    1. Stay tuned, Debbie. It is on tomorrow’s blog post.

  3. I love love love the outfit with the cashmere gray sweater! I do not have anything cashmere, so that will be my big fall purchase. Thank you for all the great outfit combinations!

One thing I would add to your list is at least one pair of gloves. I prefer driving gloves, but in this age of technology, being able to still use my iPhone while keeping my hands warm, is a plus. Gloves can make a statement or blend in. Come on Fall!

  5. Rhoda Clark says:

Loved you post on fall essentials. Just an fyi, for anyone looking for affordable cashmere: try Quince. I tried them on a recommendation and the prices are so affordable and the product is awesome! I added two v-neck sweaters just a few months ago and really filled in my fall wardrobe. The prices on this website will surprise and delight you.

  6. Love, love the Bomber jacket/outfit you were wearing!!

  11. Sharon Johnson says:

I love boots, but have such a difficult time finding a pair, my feet are small and my calves are big!

    1. My calves are too big for some “regular” width boots, and the wide widths swallow them. Lol!

  12. Great post today!! I am happy to say that I have at least one item in every category so I should be all set. I’m so ready for some fall weather.

    1. Perfect!!! You will be styling this fall!
