Today, we’re diving into something super important for our skin—the best foundations for mature skin! As we get older, we need makeup that works with us, not against us, especially when it comes to fine lines, wrinkles, and dry patches. It doesn’t matter if you’re dealing with oily skin, looking for something with buildable coverage, or needing a bit of extra hydration; I’ve found some fantastic options! Each one has something special, from SPF to skin-loving ingredients like hyaluronic acid, so let’s get to it!

What type of foundations are best for mature skin?

For mature skin, serum foundations and tinted moisturizers are great picks. These formulas help with hydration and to improve skin texture, which can be more important as we age. Tip: look for foundations with added sunscreen to protect against sun damage, as well as those that contain ingredients like hyaluronic acid to boost moisture and reduce the appearance of fine lines and pigmentation.

Stay away from overly drying matte foundations, as they can actually emphasize wrinkles and dark circles. Yikes! A primer and concealer can also help smooth out the skin. Consulting a board-certified dermatologist can guide you to the best active care foundation for your skin type.

Tania Stephens wearing Charlotte Tilbury Foundation in a striped shirt

I’ve recently started using Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Flawless Filter in Shade 2. This foundation is very lightweight and gives your skin a radiant, glowing finish. If you prefer a full-coverage foundation, this is not the one for you. I also use this Concealer and Airbrush Flawless Finish Setting Powder to finish the look.

Let’s start with a household name – Loreal! This foundation is great for mature skin. It’s lightweight and packed with ingredients like glycerin, which boosts moisture and helps smooth over those fine lines and wrinkles. It gives a natural finish but still offers medium coverage to even out the complexion. Plus, the radiant formula doesn’t settle into pores, leaving your skin with a dewy glow—perfect for dry or sensitive skin. It’s also available in several shades, so finding a match for your skin tone is easy.

How do you find your correct foundation shade?

Finding the right foundation shade starts by considering your undertones—whether they are warm, cool, or neutral. Many stores like Walmart or beauty counters offer testers, allowing you to try several shades to see which one blends best into your natural skin tone.

Checking the shade in natural light is important, as artificial lighting can affect how the shade looks. Some brands like Giorgio Armani or Lancome have a wide shade range, making it easier to find your match. You can also consult lab-tested options or visit a makeup artist in New York City to ensure the shade enhances your pigmentation without looking too light or dark.

For those of us who need some serious hydration, this foundation is packed with awesome skin-loving ingredients like aloe vera and vitamin E. It’s great for dry or mature skin, as it adds moisture while giving full coverage without feeling heavy. The built-in SPF 45 is an awesome perk. It’s great for anyone looking to reduce the appearance of fine lines and sun spots!

The Best Foundation for Mature Skin

If you’re looking for a full-coverage foundation that acts like skincare, this is it! Packed with SPF 50, it gives you protection from sun damage plus full coverage for dark spots and uneven skin tone. Hyaluronic acid plumps the skin and keeps it looking youthful. I love how it doesn’t feel cakey, even with the full coverage—your skin will feel moisturized all day long!

I need to try this foundation stick!!! It makes it easy to apply and touch up throughout the day, plus the sheer glow formula is buildable for just the right amount of coverage. It hydrates with key ingredients like shea butter and ginseng, making it great for dry or combination skin. The natural finish and radiance it gives are perfect for a no-makeup makeup look. I want to look natural, even though I’m not, lol. And, of course, it comes in various shades to suit different skin tones.

Okay, now for a little luxury – Chanel! It provides full coverage and leaves your skin looking flawless with a matte finish. The long-wear formula is ideal for oily skin, helping to control shine without drying out your complexion. Plus, it has SPF 15, which adds some sun protection while keeping your skin looking smooth and even all day. It’s great for anyone wanting a foundation that lasts through anything while still feeling comfortable on the skin.

The Best Foundation for Mature Skin

Lancôme’s Teint Idole (don’t ask me how to pronounce that) is known for its 24-hour wear, making it a go-to for long days or special events! The formula is buildable, so you can go for light or full coverage depending on what you need. It contains SPF 15 and feels super lightweight, even though it offers amazing coverage. This foundation has a matte finish but still feels moisturizing, thanks to its hydrating ingredients like glycerin. It’s also great for hiding imperfections and keeping skin looking smooth and radiant.

Okay, now THIS is a household name. Cover Girl is a budget-friendly option that still delivers! The CoverGirl & Olay foundation is packed with anti-aging ingredients like collagen to help improve skin elasticity and keep it looking firm. It offers medium coverage and has a radiant, natural finish that doesn’t cake or settle into wrinkles. It’s a fantastic choice if you want something that hydrates and smooths out fine lines, especially for dry skin.

The Best Foundation for Mature Skin

For something a little fancy, the Dior Backstage Face & Body Foundation is perfect! This liquid foundation is lightweight, buildable, and leaves you with a natural finish. It’s awesome for mature skin because it doesn’t emphasize fine lines or wrinkles. I love that it’s also great for all skin types, from oily to dry, and has a wide shade range, so you’ll definitely find your match. It’s perfect for an everyday look or special occasions!

If you’re into clean beauty, this BareMinerals foundation is a classic. It’s made from mineral ingredients, which means it’s super gentle on the skin—great for anyone with sensitive or acne-prone skin. The powder formula provides buildable coverage and a natural finish, leaving your skin looking smooth and radiant. It also has SPF 15 to help protect against sun damage, and the formula helps minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

I have always fought redness in my skin but I am sensitive to many products. At age 74 I will still occasionally get a pimple. For many years I have worn MaryKay and it seems ok. I also try not to wear makeup everyday.

  14. Hi Tania. I look forward to your daily emails. They’re so informative for us gals over 50 (shhhh…over 60 lol). Where can I find the red and white stripe button down you’re wearing in the first photo? It’s very flattering on you and a nice alternative to the blue and white striped I’m seeing everywhere.

  15. Melissa Sergent says:

Awesome post! I really enjoyed this one!

  16. Nice product and you all look great!

  17. I love IT Cosmetics Foundations. With the high SPF factor, I wear it at the beach or while out doing yard work in lieu of regular face sunscreen (even if I’m not putting on a full face of makeup.) I’m very fair skinned and it works great for me with no greasy film, sensitivity, burning eyes or breakouts!

  18. This is a lovely photo of you, Tania! Your skin glows!

  19. I don’t see Laura Geller on your list. I just started using it this year and it is great. Very light and natural looking.

  30. I absolutely LOVE IT Bye Bye Foundation! Awesome stuff and glad you shared it!

  31. This hit hard for me. One day, I was living my life, wearing the foundation that I’d worn forever, and out of nowhere, BINK! the foundation that was my friend for so long, and looked amazing for so long, now sinks into my pores, doesn’t absorb and kind of sits on my skin in streaks. I look terrible.
Needless to say, I stopped using it.
Now, fast forward about 2 years, and I’m STILL trying to find a foundation that doesn’t look worse than my natural skin – age spots and all.

Thank you for being a REAL GURL! So refreshing ❤️

  32. I am so glad to read this article! I am about 50 and need a good foundation.

  33. Dorothy Kinnaman says:

I’m a big time Estée Lauder girl! I’m still wearing their Double Wear and have for years. While it may seem a little heavy, I’ve begun using a damp sponge. I have tried Futurist as well but unfortunately it did settle in my lines. Thank you for this update. I’m going to re-read & may try a new foundation.
Love your opening, family is everything!!

  34. Great options. Thanks.

  35. Great picture of y’all. Looks like an amazing weekend for everyone.
