HOW TO STYLE A DENIM DRESS CASUALLY
The other day someone, sorry I forgot who, asked me to style a denim dress. Even when I don’t comment back, I do read your comments and will try to accommodate your request when I can. Sometimes I just don’t know the answer, and sometimes it takes me a while to come up with the answer Lol! In this case, I had just purchased a denim dress about a month earlier and had not worn it yet, so I thought this will be a perfect assignment. I immediately started thinking how to style a denim dress casually.
Casual dressing is not something that comes easy for me. Mind you I don’t dress “fancy”, but I do consider my style a little closer to dressy than casual. I like my high heels and my bling, and I don’t usually think of those items in the casual category. I decided to wear the dress casual today, and I will wear it dressy the next time. That way you will be able to see it styled both ways.
This denim dress was from Ross, and the one thing I will say about Ross is that they always have the best prices on dresses. This little dress was 14.99. Just think of the possibilities for only 14.99. Here is a similar misses version from JC Penny and here is a plus size version.
I chose to wear my gray converse sneakers with the dress today, which made Joe snicker. He doesn’t see me in sneakers very often, so he made fun of me just a little. As my granddaughter Matti says, “I not care!” Haha I was comfortable and “I” thought I looked cute. I will tell you that I think Converse sneakers run large. I normally wear a 9 in a shoe, but I have on an 8. This are snug, so an 8.5 would have worked also, but keep that in mind if you order a pair. Here is a similar pair.
I have on a Zuni layering necklace, and a renegade bracelet by Stella & Dot, and a bangle that I bought at TJ Maxx. Even though I was going casual, I just couldn’t make myself not wear some dressy jewelry. If I had a cute leather bracelet, and a leather purse, it would look cute with this look. See, just another way you can style the dress. Or how about cowboy boots, or I bet my yellow vest from Glamour Farms would look cute too.
I grabbed my gray cross body purse that I picked up from TJ Maxx a couple months ago, just because it brought the gray of my sneakers together. I sometimes like my shoes and purse to match, I think it is a classy look. I know the trend is not to match, but whatever…. Here is a similar purse.
Here is a look from the back. The dress stays the same length all around. I will try to upload a video at the bottom that will show the outfit from all directions.
I am so glad you stopped by to visit with me this hump day. I hope that your day is a happy one, and that your rear sees some sunshine. Haha

Your style is fab. I have been looking for an over fifties blog (fashion). I also don’t like thefootwear but think the dress really suits you. You have inspired me to play around a bit with my footwear and handbags. I am now going to pull the denim dress out of the wardrobe and play around with accessories. I also notice you have a nicely styled hairdo. I think this helps so much as part of your overall style. Look forward to all your ideas and no doubt will copy some lol.
Welcome Enrietta!!! I am so happy that you found my blog. ?
An adorable look on you! You class it up with the bling & matching purse/shoes! It gives me a great idea for work! Thanks & have a blessed day!! PS Where do you live that you get to see deer & turkey in the mornings?
I live in the mountains of Virginia.
I love your style. The jean dress and sneakers are adorable on you. When I retire I hope to wear chambray and denim everyday for the rest of my life. Just kidding, but it’s my favorite. I too like a more formal look in clothing. I am trying to figure out how to wear jewelry to complement my outfits. You do such a good job accessorizing your outfits. You have a wonderful sense of style. Thanks for sharing.
I can’t tell you how much I’ve spent on shipping fees trying to find a denim dress that looks as great as this one does on you. Who/ what is the manufacture? I used to shop Ross alot, but lately the ones close to me have gotten so trashy & unkept it’s not fun anymore. I’d like to see if I can find your dress online. Thanks for info.
Love your style and you always look so pretty, but IMO the sneakers just don’t work this time. As another commenter stated, perhaps the jewelry/purse are what doesn’t work with the shoes you selected. I think cute flats or low-heeled casual strappy sandals would look awesome. Love the dress and the way you look in it!
The dress is super cute! But I really don’t like it with the Converse sneakers. I cute flat sandal would be really cute! Plus your jewelry is too dressy for a casual look. I think Chuck Taylors are super cute with the right outfit. But this dress is not one of them. But, you never know until you try! Thanks for putting yourself out there for us to see. I admire you for all of your styles! This just wasn’t my favorite. You still rock each and every day!
Unfortunately this will not be my only “not on point” outfit. You gurls get to see ALL my efforts, the good and the bad. Haha
That’s what I appreciate about you, Tania! You tried a look……. it wasn’t awful, but it wasn’t my fave, but you put yourself out there, trying new styles. I will say this, if YOU like it with the Chucks, then wear them! You’ve taught me that. You’re a beautiful, awesome lady! I know that even bigger things are in store for you! Cause, you totally rock!
Thanks Julie. I am not the most comfortable in sneakers, but I thought I would venture outside my comfort zone.
Cute, cute, cute! I think my Old Navy dress is exactly like that one.
Back to work tomorrow after all the flooding in our area (Cypress, outside of Houston). We are high and dry, however the flooding was very close…in our neighborhood. Praying for all those affected.
Brandye, I am glad to hear you are ok. Our area is prone to floods,so I know how scary they can be. I am sending out a prayer for those who were not so lucky.
You look amazing! I love the converse with the denim dress. A great style all ages can pull off. Love your blog. I am relatively new to your blog. I think I heard about you from JoLynne.
Love the videos! I can really see the outfit better. I read Debbie’s comment about how do you change out purses quickly. I have a couple small zippered bags in my purse that keep everything tidy and so easy to take them out and put in a new purse. My purse was always a mess. Then I started to use more purses and came up with little bags solution. I am so happy that I did this. There is nothing better than opening your purse and knowing where everything is.
Hi Tania: I love your jeans dress and you look fabulous wearing it! I have a question about your purses…I notice you change them out frequently. How do you keep things organized in your purse to do quick changes? Do you have lots of small zip bags that you can pull out easily? Just wondering because I would like to change purses more frequently but I always have such a mess in my purse it seems like too much trouble! Thanks for any tips you have.
