HOW TO STYLE A DENIM DRESS CASUALLY
The other day someone, sorry I forgot who, asked me to style a denim dress. Even when I don’t comment back, I do read your comments and will try to accommodate your request when I can. Sometimes I just don’t know the answer, and sometimes it takes me a while to come up with the answer Lol! In this case, I had just purchased a denim dress about a month earlier and had not worn it yet, so I thought this will be a perfect assignment. I immediately started thinking how to style a denim dress casually.
Casual dressing is not something that comes easy for me. Mind you I don’t dress “fancy”, but I do consider my style a little closer to dressy than casual. I like my high heels and my bling, and I don’t usually think of those items in the casual category. I decided to wear the dress casual today, and I will wear it dressy the next time. That way you will be able to see it styled both ways.
This denim dress was from Ross, and the one thing I will say about Ross is that they always have the best prices on dresses. This little dress was 14.99. Just think of the possibilities for only 14.99. Here is a similar misses version from JC Penny and here is a plus size version.
I chose to wear my gray converse sneakers with the dress today, which made Joe snicker. He doesn’t see me in sneakers very often, so he made fun of me just a little. As my granddaughter Matti says, “I not care!” Haha I was comfortable and “I” thought I looked cute. I will tell you that I think Converse sneakers run large. I normally wear a 9 in a shoe, but I have on an 8. This are snug, so an 8.5 would have worked also, but keep that in mind if you order a pair. Here is a similar pair.
I have on a Zuni layering necklace, and a renegade bracelet by Stella & Dot, and a bangle that I bought at TJ Maxx. Even though I was going casual, I just couldn’t make myself not wear some dressy jewelry. If I had a cute leather bracelet, and a leather purse, it would look cute with this look. See, just another way you can style the dress. Or how about cowboy boots, or I bet my yellow vest from Glamour Farms would look cute too.
I grabbed my gray cross body purse that I picked up from TJ Maxx a couple months ago, just because it brought the gray of my sneakers together. I sometimes like my shoes and purse to match, I think it is a classy look. I know the trend is not to match, but whatever…. Here is a similar purse. Here is a look from the back. The dress stays the same length all around. I will try to upload a video at the bottom that will show the outfit from all directions.
I am so glad you stopped by to visit with me this hump day. I hope that your day is a happy one, and that your rear sees some sunshine. Haha

Nice post! You are looking so adorable in these images. I really like your post! I also fond to wear the denim dresses as well. Thanks for the post.
You are looking so adorable in this dress. I will appreciate you how you carry this dress with differing accessories…I really like to read the fashion blogs… I love to be updated with the latest fashion or trend…
Your style is fab. I have been looking for an over fifties blog (fashion). I also don’t like thefootwear but think the dress really suits you. You have inspired me to play around a bit with my footwear and handbags. I am now going to pull the denim dress out of the wardrobe and play around with accessories. I also notice you have a nicely styled hairdo. I think this helps so much as part of your overall style. Look forward to all your ideas and no doubt will copy some lol.
Welcome Enrietta!!! I am so happy that you found my blog. ?
An adorable look on you! You class it up with the bling & matching purse/shoes! It gives me a great idea for work! Thanks & have a blessed day!! PS Where do you live that you get to see deer & turkey in the mornings?
I live in the mountains of Virginia.
I love your style. The jean dress and sneakers are adorable on you. When I retire I hope to wear chambray and denim everyday for the rest of my life. Just kidding, but it’s my favorite. I too like a more formal look in clothing. I am trying to figure out how to wear jewelry to complement my outfits. You do such a good job accessorizing your outfits. You have a wonderful sense of style. Thanks for sharing.
I can’t tell you how much I’ve spent on shipping fees trying to find a denim dress that looks as great as this one does on you. Who/ what is the manufacture? I used to shop Ross alot, but lately the ones close to me have gotten so trashy & unkept it’s not fun anymore. I’d like to see if I can find your dress online. Thanks for info.
Love your style and you always look so pretty, but IMO the sneakers just don’t work this time. As another commenter stated, perhaps the jewelry/purse are what doesn’t work with the shoes you selected. I think cute flats or low-heeled casual strappy sandals would look awesome. Love the dress and the way you look in it!
The dress is super cute! But I really don’t like it with the Converse sneakers. I cute flat sandal would be really cute! Plus your jewelry is too dressy for a casual look. I think Chuck Taylors are super cute with the right outfit. But this dress is not one of them. But, you never know until you try! Thanks for putting yourself out there for us to see. I admire you for all of your styles! This just wasn’t my favorite. You still rock each and every day!
Unfortunately this will not be my only “not on point” outfit. You gurls get to see ALL my efforts, the good and the bad. Haha
That’s what I appreciate about you, Tania! You tried a look……. it wasn’t awful, but it wasn’t my fave, but you put yourself out there, trying new styles. I will say this, if YOU like it with the Chucks, then wear them! You’ve taught me that. You’re a beautiful, awesome lady! I know that even bigger things are in store for you! Cause, you totally rock!
Thanks Julie. I am not the most comfortable in sneakers, but I thought I would venture outside my comfort zone.
Cute, cute, cute! I think my Old Navy dress is exactly like that one.
Back to work tomorrow after all the flooding in our area (Cypress, outside of Houston). We are high and dry, however the flooding was very close…in our neighborhood. Praying for all those affected.
Brandye, I am glad to hear you are ok. Our area is prone to floods,so I know how scary they can be. I am sending out a prayer for those who were not so lucky.
You look amazing! I love the converse with the denim dress. A great style all ages can pull off. Love your blog. I am relatively new to your blog. I think I heard about you from JoLynne.
Love the videos! I can really see the outfit better. I read Debbie’s comment about how do you change out purses quickly. I have a couple small zippered bags in my purse that keep everything tidy and so easy to take them out and put in a new purse. My purse was always a mess. Then I started to use more purses and came up with little bags solution. I am so happy that I did this. There is nothing better than opening your purse and knowing where everything is.
Hi Tania: I love your jeans dress and you look fabulous wearing it! I have a question about your purses…I notice you change them out frequently. How do you keep things organized in your purse to do quick changes? Do you have lots of small zip bags that you can pull out easily? Just wondering because I would like to change purses more frequently but I always have such a mess in my purse it seems like too much trouble! Thanks for any tips you have.
Very cute! I own 5 denim dresses; very tailored, dressy to super casual. I am with Julie S. – go to Old Navy and pick up a few summer dresses for a quick, easy, pulled together look. I never wear Converse because I have a “big foot” thing – my feet are long and thin and when I wear a wide, flat shoe I feel I look like Clem Ciddle Hopper!
Hi just read your interview on 40 plus style blog. Great responses. Well done Tania. I like your blog because you keep it real and affordable
Like the dress, but not the chuck’s, not on me anyway.
Oh my stars.. You are so adorable .. ..Love it
I’m so jealous that your denim dress is has a straight hem. I bought one that goes up on the sides and standing up, it’s great but not to much sitting down. Shows a little tooooo much thigh. Anyway, I was wondering why you didn’t use a colorful bag when I got to your explanation of the gray. It made me chuckle because at 54, I can’t resist the matching aspects sometimes either! Or the fact that I just like one bag better than another bag – “I not care!” Enjoy the rest of your day.
I love your style and you always look fabulous, but the converse shoes with this dress doesn’t work. You could have worn flip flops to make it look casual or a pair of flat sandals.
And why all the fancy jewelry if you’re going for casual?
Cuteness! I have the red converse, and love them!!! they do run a little big I bought 1/2 a size smaller. Look forward to seeing the dressy version of the denim dress!
Very cute!! I think it would look adorable with camel color wedges too!!! Thanks for sharing Tania!
I really really like that denim dress- definitely must get one. I have been on an Old Navy casual dress run lately- come spring/summer I love just being able to plop on a dress, some jewelry, shoes and BOOM- I’m out the door! This little denim number is too cute and will fit right into my routine!
Love the videos!! They really add a little something- allowing us to really ‘see’ the outfit!
Also, congrats on your interview/highlight with 40 Plus Style! It is great to see all your success! 🙂
I haven’t been following you for very long, but since starting, yours is the first email I open every morning. I am learning so much about style and have put together a couple of similar outfits with the clothes that are in my closet. And yesterday was the first time I walked into an Old Navy store ever! Thank you, thank you, thank you. I may actually look “put together stylishly” when I go out.
Love the Chuck’s! Bought my first pair recently and I’m loving them. They make me smile when I put them on. Will be buying another pair, maybe a pattern or a fun color. In my opinion, maturity is way overrated and you do look classy.
Love the added videos
Love the look! Cato store has a few denim dresses. One that is very similar to the one you have in now on sale for 19 .99 i cant post a pic, but if you go to the website and search fir denim dress , quite a few come up. They carry plus sizes too.
Don’t like the Chuck’s! You’re too classy (and mature) to be wearing those. Some flat sandals maybe?
I love the look. Do you mind my asking how tall are you? I ask because most of the denim dressing I have found are a little to short for me. But yours is perfect on you. Thanks for the styling ideas! Have a great day!
Charlene, I am 5’6″ tall.
I absolutely adore this look and will be drying sneakers with my dress when we get warmer weather in the UK
Wow – I wore the same dress today. (Great minds … lol) I wore a pair of tuxedo flats with mine, next time I will try my Aerosoles sneakers. I’m with you on the jewelry – I can have on jean and flip flops but I will have bracelets and earrings on. Have a wonderful day!!!!
You look adorable…and chic! Don’t you listen to Joe. Although maybe he could dress you up one day for your blog…wouldn’t that be something! Ha ha! Love your candid chats with us…makes you so endearing. ❤
Cute outfit today. I love this blog. Very inspirational, makes me want to re-think my closet and wardrobe a bit, and take more chances.
Love your denim dress. I do not have one but will be looking for one. Looks so good on you. You always look so put together. I have a question about your nails. Yours always look so pretty. Do you prefer gel or acrylic? Do you know the color you have on? Thank you
Sharon, they are my nails, but they put gel overlay on them to help them with strength. I just got them done, and was going to mention the color, but I didn’t think it showed up too well. It is called Baby Girl and here is the link: http://amzn.to/26eKt1f
I just love your style, you always look so put together. I was wondering I am a big JCPenney shopper. Do you think you could put together outfits bought from JCPenney ?
I love JC Penny, Isabel. You can always find nice outfits to wear from there. My problem is that there is no store close to me, so I don’t shop there very often. I only have a few jackets that I can think of that came from there. I’ll think on it.
Super cute! I’ve been dying for a pair of Chucks, but feared I am too old to pull off the look. What was I thinking? Now I REALLY want a pair!
Haha Go for it Creal!
Love the look, love the dress, perfect for you! (And me too). Sneakers are too cute for a casual look. There are so many ways to wear this dress, can’t wait to see your ideas. I have to find the closest Ross stores. I think they are in the neighboring states to Ohio.? Wish they were closer. Thank you for your daily inspiration, in so many ways.
I am looking for a denim shirt dress similar to this. I have a dressier denim dress that I ordered out of my mom’s Blair catalog. It just happened not to have embroidery on it so I knew I could put some cute jewelry with it. I have worn it to church & to work. I like your dress with the Converse. That would work well for me. I work in a high school & have to work part time in the summer. I can dress casually but I still need to look decent. I need to go back to Ross.
TJMaxx and Marshall are featuring them
alothough they may be moving to summery versions now, but the price is right
Good to see you again, Tania! I feel like a kid on Christmas morning every time I see an email from you in my inbox. 😀
I know that you, like me, prefer a more dressed-up look most days, but I really love this look on you. The Converse are super cute and I’ll bet they’re comfy, too!
The way you styled this look casually looks fantastic. I’m looking forward to seeing how you style this look in a more dressed-up way, too.
PS – I love your little stories about the things that Joe, your kids, and grandkids say. Your family seem like a really fun and playful bunch! Can I be your sister? Hahaha!
Thanks again for another dose of style inspiration.
Of course, Alyson! We can be style sisters. Lol!
Deal! 😀
I love the dress and how you styled it. I have always worn denim even back when denim wasn’t in fashion. That tells you how old I am. ☺️
Keep doing the videos.
I also snickered with the converse shoes. Such a cute dress…….maybe the jewelry was too dressy. I am still a fan!
That’s what I think too. Lol!
Love the video! Great touch!
Love it and you look great in the video!
I love your style! I will be traveling to some major European capitals soon. Madrid, Paris and Rome. Travel is the one time when a capsule wardrobe makes sense to me. I want to travel very light since I feel I always overpack! Would you give me some suggestions? I’m sure there are other ladies planning trips this year. You seem to travel a bit yourself. Any tips? Advice?
Thanks.
I am horrible when it comes to packing! I always take too much stuff, I never try on before hand so half the things don’t fit, and I will usually forget something I really need. Maybe I will start thinking about this topic, though since it would not only benefit you, but me too. Thanks for following.
I HATE to pack. I leave it to the last minute. If I could hire someone to pack for me, I would do it!
Yep, I could use your ideas as well, headed to Budapest, Venice and Munich for 10 days in July using trains and airplanes for travel I need to keep it to a single 21″ carry-on bag. Going to be a challenge for sure!
Thanks, Tania. Sounds like there is interest in this topic. When it comes to packing, we certainly are kindred spirits! Like you, I always take too much stuff but not necessarily the right stuff….glad I got you thinking about this topic…..
