Spanx Dress Review: Are Spanx Dresses Really the Perfect Dress?

SPANX first hit the scene way back in 2000. Founded by Sara Blakely, SPANX started with a simple concept – to create a footless pantyhose that would provide slimming and smoothing under clothing. The brand has made a big impact on the fashion world. SPANX has since evolved into a multi-million-dollar empire, offering a wide range of clothing items.

You’ve heard me talk about how much I love their Bra-llelujah bra, their faux leather leggings, and most recently their white button-down. When I recently heard about their line of “Perfect Dresses,” I knew I had to try them. Today, I am doing a full Spanx dress review on their Perfect Fit and Flare dress and A-line 3/4 sleeve dress. Keep reading to see what I love about each dress!

Spanx Perfect Fit and Flare Dress Review

The first Perfect Dress I tried was the Fit and Flare version. This dress is designed to be tight around your bust and then flare out. This is one of my favorite dress silhouettes because it’s super flattering. It’s available in black and red, but I opted for the red. I think it is so bold but also chic and classic.

One of my favorite features is the fact that both dresses are machine washable, because who has time for dry-cleaning! I love that it has hidden functional pockets. They are the perfect size for carrying a tissue and a lipstick! You could fit more in there, but I think that would add visual bulk to your hips. I also really like that the zipper has an elongated ribbon attached, making it easy to reach on my own.

This dress could easily be dressed up or down. I wanted to dress it up like I would wear it out for a date night with Joe, so I paired the dress with a pair of leopard print heels and one of my favorite handbags. I also put on my pearl necklace and pearl bracelet. You could trade out the heels for ballet flats, mules, or sandals to dress it down for a more casual daytime look.

The fabric is buttery soft, but sturdy so that it smooths and hides any lumps or bulges. I ordered it in a large, and it fits me like a glove, so I would say it is true to size. This dress is so versatile, and I can see myself wearing it to church, date nights, and so much more!

Spanx Perfect Dress A-line 3/4 Sleeve Dress Review

The second Perfect Dress I am wearing is the Perfect A-line 3/4 Sleeve Dress. It also comes in black and red, so I decided to try this version in the black. You’ve heard me talk before about the importance of having a great little black dress in your closet, and I think I’ll find myself reaching for this LBD all the time!

If you don’t like showing your arms, you will prefer this version. Since this dress has 3/4 sleeves, it can be a staple in your wardrobe year round. The sleeves have a small zipper at the cuff, so you can wear them zipped or unzipped. It has the same easy to use zipper as the first dress and also features hidden pockets.

I think the fit of the dress is very flattering, especially in combination with the smoothing ponte fabric. It hits at the perfect spot just above my knees for a modest length that makes it appropriate for everything from work, to dinner, to the funeral home, etc. I’m 5’6″ and wearing a large for reference, so it may be longer or shorter on you, depending on your height.

  1. Hi! Love the LBD! Can you tell me what length is your pearl necklace? TIA

    1. Leslie, when I got mine there was only one length. I think it is 18″, but I’m not sure.

  2. Laurie de la Garrigue says:

The perfect A-line dress is no longer available from Spanks. Do you have any other ideas for a fit and flare dress that would be appropriate for a funeral?
    Thanks!
    Laurie

  3. Love the red dress!! Did you feel that it was tight in the bust area?

    1. Not so much in the bust, but through the waist. But, that is where I hold most of my weight.

  4. Ann Bushle says:

Both dresses look amazing on you! True classic shapes! And I absolutely LOVE the shoes! Thanks for showing us the dresses – I have seen them featured in emails I get from Spanx. I thought of them more as “work” dresses but you showed us how versatile they are!

  5. love the 3/4 sleeve one because it doesn’t show my arms ……..good going my dear. I’m 78 and follow you like a superfan. Because you show practical pretty affordable and so affordable outfits.
God blesses you and you bless us with your talent and kindness. Thank you.

  6. Well Spanx nailed it with these dresses! They are perfect…in shape, with POCKETS!, and the extra long ribbon so you can zip yourself up, well, that’s just genius. I love both styles but would probably buy the one with 3/4 sleeves. The red is gorgeous color. 👍🏻 for sure.

  7. Mondria Davenport says:

I like both dresses on you, but that Louis Vuitton bag is AhhMazing!!

  8. I love both of these dresses. Will look and see if they make them in plus sizes 3x in particular. I would love to have a LBD that fits well.

  11. I love the 3/4 sleeve dress but they both look amazing on you! They look like very high quality dresses

  12. Nancy Jane Titus says:

Ordering the 3/4 sleeve A-line Dress. Can’t wait to wear it.

  13. You look fabulous in both dresses and even though I prefer having sleeves I like the red flare dress better. I would just wear a cardigan with it.

  14. Christina Janvrin says:

Tania both dresses look beautiful on you! Thank you for doing this blog

  16. Love ❤️ these choices!!! I actually bought a similar red dress at chicos with my birthday 🥳 coupon this week. Love the color. Dresses are my go to so I don’t have to worry if I can squeeze into my jeans lol. Glad you had a good trip !

  17. Shanna Lewis says:

I love both dresses! Very pretty and versatile!

  18. Those dresses are darling on you!!!
I am 5’7”…and am afraid they would be above my knee….
    Your thoughts?
Also, your huge pearl earrings are soo cool!
    Thx,
    Marianne

    1. Marianne, I’m 5’6″, so they should look the same on you as they do on me.

  19. Red is really your color. Welcome back from your mini vacation. Hope you feel more rested today.

    1. Well, I immediately went to sleep for 2 hours once I got home, went to bed around 8:30, and have taken another 2 hour nap today. Lol!!!

  20. I love the 3/4 sleeve dress, and will keep it in mind next time I need to purchase one. Thanks for modeling them!

  21. Rhonda Case says:

Hi Tanya, thanks for showing the Spanx dresses. I have a question about hosiery. When you are dressing up with heels, do you wear hosiery or go bare legged? I never know what to do with my legs, especially in the colder months when my legs are white! Thanks for letting me know.

    1. Karen Poteat says:

I was also wondering about wearing hosiery in the cool seasons. Tania, you look ravishing in both dresses!

  22. I prefer you in the second 3/4 sleeve black SPANX dress. The fit is far more flattering on you and I suspect me, as well. The red sleeveless dress is too short and not the most flattering fit, although the color is stunning on you!

  23. Michelle Davis says:

Didn’t know Spanx made dresses thank you for reviewing,I love the pockets!

  24. Elizabeth Smith says:

Love both dresses. I think I would get the black one because I’m so conscious about my arms.

  25. Carolina Gomez says:

Great dresses! I’m more of a pants and top girl but I’ve slowly been adding dresses to my wardrobe. The flare dress is awesome and especially nice in a bright red color! Sleeves are also a must plus you can always scrunch them up depending on where you wear your black dress to. Just love love love!

  26. Gail Clark says:

I don’t do sleeveless, but love the black 3/4 sleeve!

  27. Ginger Hiller says:

You look fabulous in both stunning dresses. I like the black one the best since it HS 3/4” sleeves.

  28. Love the blk one best because I don’t do sleeveless lol

  29. GOODNESS!!!!! I love them BOTH! Thx SO MUCH for sharing these with us! (I think I’m gonna get the sleeveless, in ❤️)!

  30. Love these on you! Didn’t know they even had had dresses.

  31. You look lovely in both dresses. I would opt for the black dress, but I do like the red one just as much. How do you choose? I guess I’ll just get both. Fingers cross that I look as gorgeous as you do.

  32. Loving both dresses! I have a similar fit and flare sleeveless dress in orchid/lavender -but I love the red dress. I also just bought a black dress from Talbot’s which is a version of the black dress you showed. Thank you so much for the inspiration outfits, and the red dress is going into my cart to think about. Have a blessed week!

  33. If the 3/4 sleeve dress were a midi length it would be my idea of the perfect dress. But both are cute dresses for someone with nice legs, and they look great on you!

  34. I like the 3/4 sleeve dress best. Both are lovely. I so agree they hang well. I think in my climate and comfort level the one with sleeves would get more wear in my closet. I am glad you brought this brand to my attention. I didn’t even know spans had dresses.

  35. I love that 3/4 sleeve dress, it looks like a perfect go-to dress for church events!

  36. Jayne Stewart says:

Both dresses look great, but just let me say this, the black dress looks fabulous on you!

  37. I love dresses! Keep the posts coming! I’ve loved your dress ideas, recently. I wear a dress or skirt to Church every week and occasionally to other things! I ordered a dress last week from one of your ideas and it came yesterday and I love it! Thanks Tania!

  38. Holy cow! A Spanx dress! Now, this is a game changer. I like the A-line one best because it has sleeves. As I have gotten older, I don’t like to show my arms as much.

    1. I agree with you that’s how I feel too

  39. So glad so see an above or knee length dress. Yesterday I only saw one dress at this length. I do wonder why you seem to navigate to the longer length. Hopefully sometime you might say.

Thanks for recommending these dresses. I have been admiring these Spanx dresses but have been hesitant in spending that money. Now I will probably purchase one. 😃

    1. Amy, it is funny because Joe likes me in shorter dresses. However, I tend to gravitate toward maxi and midi dresses. I love that style the best! But, I don’t like the sun damage on my legs, so I might be subconsciously trying to hide them.

  40. Such simple yet elegant dresses. The favorite for me would be the 3/4 length sleeve dress. I’m sure they could make these in an array of colors, and they would sell out!

  41. This is an awesome dress! Thanks for sharing!

  42. Maria Kozan says:

I loved the red dress but liked the pockets on the black one!!

  43. Both dresses are beautiful! I love that fit & flare design.

  44. These dresses are beautiful and so flattering. I love the red fit and flare style.

  45. Rosalinda Salcedo says:

What a great gesture from your hubby to wait at the airport with a chai latte!! Great hubby poiints!! These dresses are just as beautiful as yesterdays unfortunately the price point is a little steep. I’m sure they are worth it though! Have a happy Friday!! Hope you get to rest a little bit more!

  46. Love the Black one!! It is so cute on!

  47. Thank you as always for the great fashion tips!! Have a great weekend!

  48. Grandma Judy says:

beautiful classic dresses. too bad they don’t come in petite!

  49. Susan Mariotti says:

Oh the red one looks great on you. Love the simple line. Very flattering.

  50. Deborah A Titus says:

    I love them both!

  51. Tania, you look fabulous in both. You can rock anything. I do not wear sleeveless anymore without a blazer, jacket or cardigan. I wear my denim jacket with some of my dresses, sleeveless tanks and tops as well. For me the black one would be my choice and is very classy too. Both dresses are very versatile. Have a great weekend.
    ~Lisa~

  52. These dresses are indeed “perfect” on you! I am a little taller than you are and my knees closely follow my flabby crepey arms as the least favorite part of my anatomy, so I struggle to find a dress that is perfect, especially for summer. That’s ok though, I have SO MUCH to be grateful for and happy about!!

  53. You look fantastic in both dresses, but I think the red one is my fav.

  54. I love both these dresses! Thanks for sharing these! I really need dresses for Spring. My favorite is the black A Line but you look great in both of them!

  55. Two beautiful classic dresses- and the red is perfect on you!!

  56. Jeri Hoag says:

I love the Classic black. It’s really perfect for all occasions.

  57. Going to have add the black dress to my collection of LBDs. Glad you got back safely.Beverly

  58. I love them both you look gorgeous! Do they ever run a sale? Thank you so much for sharing these dresses I would have ordered a medium but the large is the right size! Thanks for doing all the work for us

    1. Rhoda, they do have sales. I’ve bought several things when they have a 20% or 30% off sale. Who knows, maybe they will have a President’s Day Sale this weekend.

  59. Both dresses are very pretty and classic, just a little too expensive for me.

  60. Dana Smithmier says:

    i want both!!!

  61. Both dresses are beautiful, but the red is absolutely made for you!

  62. Both dresses look great on you. I love the classic black. I will check out their dresses…. And see if they have any perfect options with a v-neck! I don’t think those necks would be flattering for us bustier gurls!

  63. Gail Harrison says:

    Hi Tanya!
The all look gorgeous on you! Very classy and love your heels too! I would personally go with the 3/4 sleeve to hide my arms, at my age! Enjoy sleeveless while you can! You wear them so well!

    1. Gail, my arms are flabby and not toned, but I don’t let that stop me from enjoying a sleeveless dress. If I’m bothered, I’ll add a wrap, a cardigan, a blazer, or even a denim jacket to the top/dress.

      1. Lynda Brown says:

Heard actress Angie Harmon (age 50) say “If you can’t tone it, tan it.” Lol! I agree. Bring on the self-tanner. You look great in the red. I really love the 3/4 sleeve black.

  64. Kris Brass says:

love the red dress. you look beautiful in it. shows that just a plain colored dress can be gorgeous..of course cannot forget the shoes..

    1. Kris, I love a solid color dress since you can jazz it up with your accessories.

  65. Thanks for the review on these. I’ve been wondering about them. I think it might me time to try one out!

    1. Stacey, the red one fits more snug than the black one because of the style.

      1. Curious for us lumpy girls if we need to wear spanx underneath?

You always look so well put together!

        1. Kathy, the red dress is more form-fitting, so you might want to wear SPANX underneath it.

  66. I love both of them. You look great.

    1. I really love the fabric. They are extremely good quality.

      1. I like them both! Two great choices! I like the black with 3/4 sleeves but I am going to check out that dress red.
PS. You look great in both of them!

  67. Oh my…..I love them both! So I guess I have to buy both! 😂
