Do I need to use a setting spray?

So, you’re wondering if you really need to use a setting spray? Honestly, it can be a total game-changer, especially if you want your makeup to stay put all day long. Think of it as the finishing touch that locks everything in place, so you don’t have to worry about your look melting or fading. Plus, there are sprays for every skin type—whether you need something mattifying for oily skin or something to give you that dewy glow.

It’s a super easy step to add to your routine (it takes me one second!!), and it can make a huge difference in how fresh and flawless your makeup looks from morning to night. While it’s not a must-have, once you try it, you might wonder how you ever did without it! Even if you don’t use it on a daily basis, it’s a great tool to have in your makeup bag for long days when you need your makeup to last, like weddings, funerals, outdoor cookouts, etc.

When do I use a setting spray?

I use a setting spray as the last step in my makeup routine. After I’ve applied all my products, including foundation, concealer, blush, and eyeshadow, I give my face a few spritzes. You will want to hold the bottle about 8-10 inches away and let it dry. This helps lock in your makeup, keeping everything in place and looking fresh all day.

How do you apply a setting spray?

Hold the bottle about 8-10 inches away from your face once your makeup is completely finished. Close your eyes and mouth, then mist your face with a few spritzes, making sure to cover all areas evenly. A good trick is to spray in an “X” and “T” shape to ensure full coverage. Let it dry naturally—don’t rub or pat it in. This final step helps lock in your makeup, keeping it fresh and flawless all day long. It might seem intimidating, but it’s honestly super easy, and like I mentioned, it only adds one second to my entire routine!

The Best Makeup Setting Sprays for Women Over 50

My Favorite Setting Spray:

MAC Cosmetics Prep + Prime Setting Spray

This MAC Cosmetics Prep + Prime setting spray keeps my makeup looking fresh all day. You can also use this spray to hydrate your face if you are feeling dry, and sometimes, I use a small amount on an eyeshadow brush to hold the color in place. A lot of setting sprays have a strong fragrance, in my opinion, but I like that this one doesn’t smell like anything at all (at least to me!).

Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray

This one from Urban Decay keeps your makeup from settling into fine lines and fading or smudging for up to 16 hours! I used this one for years, and I see so many other “influencers” and bloggers using it too. It really does do a great job of keeping your makeup in place, but I ultimately switched because I didn’t love that it had a scent.

Best Setting Spray for Oily Skin:

ONE/SIZE by Patrick Starrr On ‘Til Dawn Mattifying Waterproof Setting Spray

This one is for my gurls with oily or combination skin that need a setting spray that can keep up with their busy day. This spray from Patrick Starr locks in your makeup and keeps shine at bay, thanks to the witch hazel in the formula, which is fantastic for absorbing oil. It’s waterproof and mattifying, so you can dance, sweat, or brave the rain without worrying about your makeup budging.

Best Drugstore Setting Spray:

e.l.f. Matte Magic Mist & Set

This setting spray by e.l.f. is a game-changer for keeping your makeup looking flawless all day long without breaking the bank. It’s super budget-friendly and has rave reviews on Amazon, with tons of people swearing by its mattifying power. I’ve also heard great things about e.l.f.’s Stay All Night Micro-Fine Setting Mist!

Best Setting Spray with SPF:

Supergoop! (Re) setting Refreshing Mist

If you’re looking for a quick and easy way to keep your makeup looking fresh AND protect your skin from the sun, you’ll want to try Supergoop!’s (Re)setting Refreshing Mist. Just a few spritzes throughout the day will keep you feeling cool, refreshed, and ready to tackle whatever comes your way. Plus, it’s super convenient to toss in your bag for on-the-go touch-ups.

With many products, QVC has special sets or deals that you get extra just from QVC. I just started using her baked balanced and brighten foundation and the kabuki brush and I love it.

I use the Mac Spray and love it. Your makeup looks so good!

    1. I’ve used it for a looong time.

  21. I agree with everything you have to say about setting sprays. It’s the one step you didn’t know you needed until you start using them. I still look like I have on makeup at the end of the day. I started out using it in the summer and I now use every day year round. The Elf is my go to. You just can’t beat the price. I have been using some other brands. I’ve heard good things about the L’Oréal and Milani. I’m going to give your favorite a try next.

    1. You’re right, you don’t know what you’re missing out on until you try it.
