Is There Dust On Your Bible

The other day, while driving down the road, a country song came on the radio. It was about a young man wanting a special bottle of wine for a date. The gentleman gave him a special bottle and told him that even though it didn’t look like much and was covered in dust, it held something special inside.

Dust on the Bottle is a cute song, and the tune stuck in my head. I found myself humming the song all day long, but I didn’t think much about it. Songs get stuck in my head all the time, sometimes for days at a time.

I went to bed, and later that night, I woke up humming the song, but instead of humming dust on the bottle, I was humming dust on the Bible. When I realized the words had changed, I woke up and started thinking about “why” this had happened. It had to be the Holy Spirit since the words hadn’t changed earlier in the day.

The truth is, there was dust on my Bible. It was sitting on a shelf, and I hadn’t opened it in a while. I have gotten in the habit of using my phone or laptop to look up Bible verses, and I also listen to sermons online. The Bible app is downloaded on my phone, and it is so easy to type in the chapter and verse instead of trying to flip through all the pages of my Bible. I love

I took the Bible off the shelf, wiped off any accumulated dust, and let it fall open. The Bible fell open to Isaiah 61, probably because I had a bookmark on this verse. Earlier this year, I declared this was the year of the Lord’s favor, and that favor was my word of the year. I said I would “start each morning by reading Isaiah 61. I want to be called an Oak of Righteousness and to proclaim the good news of the Lord.” Well, that lasted a couple of weeks before something got in the way.

Isaiah 61:1-2

61 The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn,

As I sat reading the chapter, I started to feel the pages between my fingers. I flipped through the Bible, stopping to read a few verses, and realized why I needed to dust off my physical Bible occasionally. I felt more connected to the Lord holding the Bible in my hands.

There is nothing wrong with using our phones, tablets, etc., to read and look up verses of the Bible. You might still feel connected when using your electronic devices, but I now know I need to grab my Bible to feel that special connection.

To GOD Goes The Glory!

Have A Blessed Day!

  1. Loved this !! I too have let the dust settle on my bible- holding it and turning the pages does fill me with more warmth, feel more connected to Him. Thank you for this reminder!! Enjoy your day- and Merry Christmas!! ❤️🤗

  2. I had always read my Bible “the old fashion way” until about a year a go when we got a new puppy who liked to eat my bible during my devotional time :). I’m afraid that now it has become a habit… my bible app does not give me that same connected feeling that you spoke of. Thank you for the reminder. I think my puppy is grown enough not to eat my bible anymore.

  3. I have to use my bible, as I listen, I want to underline, a special line. Or I make notes, on the sides. I have different bibles, as I use them for my personal studies.. I love his word. and I like Isaiah 61:1-2. Thanks for sharing.

  4. I need to dust mine off!

  5. Tania – Thank you for this post. It inspired me to get my bible out & leave it on my nightstand. You are so right – there is just something about turning those pages.

Thank you for this reminder. It is so easy to keep up with reading plans on my phone but to touch my bible will be a reunion. I will have to look for it.

I done a Woman Devotion at our Church ladies group one time titled dust on the Bible. I started I out with decorating for the Holidays and picking up your Bible and dusting it off was my wrap up. So when I seen this post I thought wow I just done that devotion

Yes!! I recently updated my Bible to one that is interactive. But the best part of the Bible is that I carry it to church or can open it up anytime for my devotions. Even though I have Bible apps on all of my electronics, I still love actually carrying and opening my Bible for inspiration. Thank You for inspiring us!!

  10. I feel so much better when I read my Bible. When I don’t I miss the experience and know something good is missing.
