Trousers aren’t just for the office anymore! They’re a great, versatile piece to add to your rotation, and there are so many different styles of trousers available . Styling trousers for women over 50 is all about finding the right fit, material, and color, and then experimenting with different outfits to find what works best for you. Don’t be afraid to try new styles and have fun with your wardrobe! Today, I’m styling several great pairs, and sharing exactly how to build a great outfit with your own trousers.

How to Style Trousers for Women Over 50

First, it’s important to choose the right fit. Look for trousers that fit comfortably around your waist and hips, without being too tight or too loose. A high-waisted style can be especially flattering, as it cinches in your waist and elongates your legs.

Next, consider the material and color of your trousers. Opt for fabrics that have a bit of stretch, such as cotton or spandex, to ensure maximum comfort. Neutral colors like black, navy, and grey are versatile and easy to pair with other pieces in your wardrobe.

When it comes to styling, there are endless possibilities. For a classic look, pair your trousers with a crisp white blouse and a blazer. This is a timeless outfit that works for any occasion, from the office to a dinner party.

If you’re looking for a more casual look, try pairing your trousers with a cozy knit sweater and ankle boots. This is a great outfit for running errands or meeting up with friends for brunch.

With their flattering fit and endless styling options, black trousers for women are definitely a great thing to add to your closet.

AUDREY CASHMERE SWEATER (Large) || DOUBLE BREASTED BLAZER (Size 10) || PORTLAND TROUSER (Size 10)

These Portland trousers are a classic piece that can be worn for years, and I feel amazing in this outfit. I paired it with the Audrey cashmere sweater in this gorgeous rich burgundy color which is perfect for fall. I rarely “need” a double breasted blazer for work or professional meetings, but I like to have one on hand for any just-in-case moment that might arise. If I was going on a job interview, this would be something I would wear. The sweater and blazer run true to size, but I sized up in the trousers, and they fit great.

I was sure I wouldn’t like the Weston pants because they are pleated in the front. Pleated pants are trending, and I keep seeing them everywhere. I carry most of my weight in my stomach area, so pleats are normally my friend. However, I LOVE these pants, and I think they look amazing. The Slender Leather Belt gives some definition between the shell and pants and adds a touch of chicness. When I saw this V-neck Arygle cardigan, I immediately placed my order for it and the matching sweater vest. The cardigan fits great, but the vest was too big because I ordered it in a large.

This pair of Black Ultra-Stretch Ponte Straight Leg Pants fit so well! As soon as I slipped these on, I immediately ordered them in Olive, Charcoal, and Navy. I own the Spanx Perfect Pants, and these pants are comparable but are only $39! I love pairing a simple and classic sweater like this $50 Mongolian Cashmere Crewneck Sweater with my trousers in the fall and winter for a chic look. This is one of those go-to looks that you can easily from daytime to nighttime.

Wearing Trousers with a Print

For a bolder and more playful look, trousers with a print-like plaid can be a great choice. They add a unique touch to any outfit. Whether you want to go for a casual look with a plain t-shirt or dress them up with a blazer and heels, plaid trousers can be worn year-round. Plus, they’re a fun way to switch up your wardrobe and add some personality to your outfits. Just remember if you choose a bold print to keep the rest of your outfit simple to let the plaid pattern take center stage.

I love these plaid trousers! The design is classic so that you can wear them for years. Notice that the pattern lines up, a detail of higher-end clothing. I paired the pants with the Medium Perfect Leather Belt by Madewell. I bought this belt years ago when most of our jeans were low or medium-waisted, so I bought a large, which is perfect for those styles. However, I will also have to buy a medium since it is too big for me with high-waisted pants and jeans.

I paired the trousers with this Mixed Stitch V-Neck Sweater that has gorgeous details! Look at the knit work and the scalloped detail on the sleeves. Because the sweater was ribbed, I sized up to a large but needed a medium instead. The sweater fits true to size and isn’t constricting.

You can also style your trousers with a matching blazer. While the Relaxed Suit Blazer and Pleated Wide Leg Trousers match, but they aren’t a set. Each piece is sold separately. I am wearing them together in this look, but you can see how dramatically changing out the top or the bottoms changes the vibe in this blog post.

Styling Trousers that Aren’t Black

Even though I love wearing black, it can be a harsh color. Choosing a trouser in a different shade like gray, brown, white, beige, etc. can be a nice way to get a softer sophisticated look. I still recommend choosing a neutral shade as they are timeless, and the styling options are endless.

The pants are a tad too big for me, but I’ve already got a smaller size on the way to me because I loved the look. The light gray pants are the perfect opportunity to add a pop of color so I added this rich burgundy one. I think it is my favorite color at the moment, and this turtleneck fits great without choking me. I hate when turtlenecks are too tight, and I have to keep yanking on them to try and loosen them up. I just received this Long Strand Necklace in Teal Mix, and you’ll see me wearing it a lot this fall. It is the perfect length, and I love all the fall colored stones. I’m wearing it with block heel pumps, but you could easily trade them out for a pair of ballet flats.

Isn’t this a gorgeous fall outfit for work and more? I love the professional look of this outfit, and it would be perfect for those who work in an office. Chocolate brown is a trending color this year, and these chocolate brown trousers fit perfectly and have great draping for a stylish look. These are great classic trousers that you can wear for years to work and more.

I paired it with this silky floral shirt, but it is not like most floral shirts. It had deeper, darker, almost moody colors and is perfect for fall. I love pairing black and brown together, and the colors in this shirt made it so easy to style with a pair of chocolate colored trousers.

I love this post and you look beautiful in all of the styles. I’m an attorney and am expected to dress professionally. In the past few years, the styles have become much more casual and it is so hard for me to find appropriate work clothes. I do hope that the tailored look will become more fashionable again.

  6. Loved your choices in pants. Looked very high end. Love your blog. I look forward to reading it!

  7. Jacque Abell says:

I love blazers with trousers. Sometimes temperatures very so much. I like the fact you can leave them unbuttoned or remove them if needed. Still not convinced about wide leg pants.

  8. I’m always on the lookout for a nice pair of slacks to wear to church and you have given us a lot of choices. Thank you.

  13. I love trousers. I’ve always had and still have a collection of black pants. I added the brown plaid pleated front trousers this year. I also have black plaid bootlegs. I’m trying to find solid brown trousers within my budget range. I like all the options you showed us.

  14. Hi! I love all these ideas. Do you have any specific recommendations for petites?

    1. This post wasn’t petite specific. However, you can find petite styles at Talbots, Old Navy, and J.Jill. They are good at size inclusive styles.

  15. The suit looks lovely on you!

  16. Gabrielle says:

I always prefer pants to skirts. So this is most welcome!
    Thanks

  17. Thanks for posting these trousers! I especially like the texture of the gray pants with the solid turtleneck. And the Peyton pants are definitely being added to my wardrobe. Quick question, though. Many pants don’t have belt loops. Is it better to keep the top untucked if you can’t wear a belt?

    1. Dawn, I usually do a front truck with most of my pants. That helps my legs look longer and it hides the belt loops.

  18. Love plaid trousers. Look so pretty.

  19. Great trousers, thanks for posting!

  20. Louise Logan says:
