If you’re like me, you probably have a black dress hanging in your closet that you love but struggle to wear in a way that feels fresh and seasonal. With a few tweaks, I’m going to show you how to style a casual black dress for spring, even though black is not a color normally associated with spring.

7 Ways To Style A Casual Black Dress For Spring

You’ll want to see all the ways I’m styling this black tank dress. I’m going to show you several casual versions, plus a couple that are dressy and could even be worn to a wedding. But the first thing you are going to need is a versatile black dress.

1. Finding The Perfect Casual Black Dress For Spring

What style of black dress will work for spring and summer?

First, you need a black dress. Look for a dress with minimal detailing and a simple, understated design. This will give you more flexibility when it comes to accessorizing and styling your dress. Avoid dresses with too much bling or embellishment, as they can be limiting and difficult to pair with other pieces. Choose a dress length that works for your body type and the occasions you plan to wear it. A knee-length dress is a good option for both casual and dressy events, while a midi or maxi dress may be better suited for more formal occasions.

The dress I’m wearing is a simple sleeveless dress from Walmart I bought a few years ago. I prefer sleeveless dresses because they are easier to layer under sweaters, cardigans, jackets, etc. You could wear this casual black dress for spring all by itself for a casual day running errands or a lunch date with friends.

Here’s another one from Amazon that looks similar in case your size in the Walmart dress is sold out. Long or short, sleeveless or with short sleeves, pockets or no pockets – all of it works. The point is to have a nice base layer.

2. How To Style A Casual Black Dress With A Denim Jacket

What Type of Jacket Looks Good With A Black Dress?

Styling a casual black dress for spring with a Denim Jacket is a great way to add a touch of edge and casualness to your outfit. A denim jacket is perfect for adding an extra layer of warmth during the spring season, and it also adds a casual, laid-back vibe to your outfit. Make sure the jacket fits well and is not too bulky, as this can overwhelm the dress.

I bought this classic Denim Jacket last year and wear it all the time. It has a fair amount of stretch, so it is comfortable instead of confining.

The style of the Vegan Leather Tote Bag is a hot trend in handbags this spring. I love wearing black and brown together, and it looks great with this casual black dress.

A woven handbag can add some visual interest to your outfit, especially if it is in a contrasting color. Brown and black look great together, so I added a Vegan Leather Tote Bag that I carried all last summer.

3. A Fun And Colorful Scarf Is The Perfect Way To Style A Casual Black Dress For Spring

What are some ways to accessorize a black outfit for spring or summer?

To add some personality and color to your outfit, consider accessorizing with a fun and colorful scarf. A brightly colored scarf can add a pop of color to your outfit and can also keep you warm on chilly spring days.

You can style your scarf in several different ways. Here, I tied loosely it for a simple look that adds visual interest and gives the outfit a put-together look. The Small Beige Crossbody Bag can be worn dressy or casually, and it is the perfect size for your essentials. The scarf I’m wearing is several years old, but I’ll link others you can achieve the same look with.

This is GORGEOUS and would really pop against the black. It’s 100% silk, 55 inches square, and less than 50 dollars! There are several different color combinations, and all of them are pretty.

Isn’t this pretty? And it’s even larger! It’s 100% silk and measures a whopping 43 inches X 43 inches. Again, if this isn’t your fave, don’t worry—it’s available in 45+ prints!

4. A Graphic Tee And A Casual Black Dress

Can Women Over 50 Wear Graphic Tees

A graphic tee is a cute way to style a casual black dress for spring. This Muah Lips graphic tee is old, but I still love wearing it, and I found one that is similar. It reminds me of the iconic Rolling Stones tongue graphic tee, but it is a little more polished. When choosing a graphic tee, look for a design that is timeless and classic, such as a vintage band tee or a graphic with a simple message. This will ensure that the tee is versatile and can be worn with a variety of different outfits.

The key to wearing a graphic tee at any age is to wear it with confidence. If you love the tee and feel good in it, then wear it proudly! Remember, fashion is all about expressing yourself and having fun with your wardrobe, regardless of your age.

Here’s another cute tee I found. Love the heart! Here’s another cute version that comes in a ton of colors!

I slipped the graphic tee over my dress and cinched it with a Bra Clip for a fitted look. The Nike Air Max Dawn Sneakers are a pair of shoes that I’ve worn constantly since they arrived at my house. They are very comfortable and stand up to the “airport” test. It never fails that your plane will arrive on one end of the airport, and your connecting flight is on the other end, so you have a lot of walking to do. These were fantastic for my last two trips.

Lululemon Belt Bags are very popular and for a good reason. They are well constructed and will hold your essentials, leaving your hands free. I carried this when I took the grandbabies to the water park, and it was so handy. They are available in lots of different colors and sizes, so you’ll be sure to find something you like.

5. A Classic Button-Up Shirt Looks Great Over A Black Dress

Wearing a button-up shirt tied over a dress is a fun and playful way to add some layers and create a unique outfit. When choosing a shirt to tie over a dress, look for a lightweight and loose-fitting shirt. A button-up shirt made of cotton or linen is a good option, as it will be breathable and comfortable to wear.

If you’re in the market for a white shirt, check out my Classic White Button Down Shirts for Women Over 50 post. But, I’m in love with the style, fit, and fabric of this lightweight shirt. I can already tell that this will be the button-up shirt I reach for most this spring and summer.

I’ve had the Michael Kors linen handbag for a while, and it is still one of my favorites. Sadly, it sold out quickly. What I love about it, especially, is the rope handle. Here’s a much cheaper version.

This isn’t as dressy, but did I mention it’s not nearly as expensive?! Tote bags are all the rage, so you really can’t go wrong. This version is just $10!

Here’s another version. I love the tan and white combo—very Martha’s Vineyard. lol. If you don’t like this one, there are several color combinations at the link—under $20!

6. A Kimono Looks Great Over A Casual Black Dress For Spring

Can I wear a black dress to a spring or summer wedding?

Can you believe this is the same tank dress? Adding this gorgeous statement Kimono to the dress gives the look a dressy, polished look. This outfit would look great for a date night, a business meeting, going to church, or wearing as a wedding guest.

The Kimono is just a hair longer than the dress. I chose to wear TOMS Espadrille Wedge Heels rather than a pair of black pumps to show you a style of shoe for an outdoor wedding. A wedge heel still looks dressy enough for a wedding, but you won’t have to worry about your heel getting stuck in the grass.

You don’t have to wear the same thing I’m wearing. That’s good news since mine is no longer available, lol. No fear – here’s a gorgeous option! It’s very inexpensive and comes in a ton of other colors and prints.

Here’s another gorgeous version. This one is longer, and I like the green a lot. The main reason I shared this one is that it’s got such nice long sleeves! I know that many of you want more coverage, so this is for you. There are other colors at the link, and it’s very reasonably priced.

This Chain Strap Small Satchel Bag looks very similar to a designer bag, but at a fraction of the cost. I chose this beige color since it will go with almost anything.

7. Add A Pop Of Color To A Black Dress For A Spring Wedding

How can I add pops of color to a black outfit for spring or summer?

I love wearing pink with black, and this Double Breasted Blazer in Neon Berry elevated this look out the roof! When anyone asks me if I can wear a black dress to a spring or summer wedding, I always say yes. Just add some bright colors to your jacket or accessories!

The double-breasted blazer hits me right below my hips, and that is a flattering length. My hot pink pumps are many years old, and I still wear them every year. While this exact pair is no longer available, I found a similar pair here.

I know that not everyone loves to wear high heels, so I’ve included this gorgeous, low-heel option. The sling-back would add a beautiful pop of color to the dress or any pair of black pants. These are under $40 dollars, and of course, there are several other colors at the link.

Well, are you ready to take the little black dress to the next level? Wear it one of these ways or all of them. You’ll get your money’s worth and look amazing in the process!

  8. Viburnums need acid fertilizer, the same as azaleas, dogwoods, rhododendrons to bloom well. Let a garden center guide you on choice of fertilizer and when to apply it.

    1. Thanks! I figured they needed something specific.

  9. Annette Swan says:

I am guessing that all of these ideas would work great with a solid navy blue dress. I was looking for a way to dress up a navy dress for a wedding. I like the kimono and scarf idea. I would never have thought of that myself.

    1. Yes, it will work with any color.

Thanks to your earlier recommendation, I have the same little black dress. It has taken me all day to get through the whole post and I’m so glad I finally succeeded. The look with the hot pink jacket is WOW! After seeing that look, I now want to find me a casual hot pink jacket that fits my lifestyle so that I can sort of recreate that look. Please tell me about the necklace you are wearing. In the past when I’ve tried to tie a top, it’s looked pathetic. That’s something that I need to work on.

    1. Ginger, it was a long post! Lol! I’m not sure which necklace you’re talking about. If it is the colorful one, that was from Chico’s, and it is several years old.

      1. Ginger Hiller says:

Thank you Tania! I bet that I can find a colorful long necklace that will add the perfect touch to the outfit. Oh, I ordered a hot pink jean jacket from Amazon last night that fits my style. My fingers are crossed that it fits because I have so many items in my closet that I can pair it with.

I guess my favorite is the white sneaker and denim jacket look. My legs have not aged beautifully so I prefer to hide as much of them as possible. LOL
