HOW TO MAXIMIZE YOUR WARDROBE

Yesterday, I started a series called, How To Get The Most Out Of Your Wardrobe. Today, I will build on that post by showing you how to go from casual to dressy in just a few steps. Well, dressy might not be the correct term because this is really not dressy; it is more elevated casual. Lol! So, if you are ready, let’s talk about how to maximize your wardrobe.

I know that I said that we would talk about how to maximize your wardrobe, but I wanted to give you a heads up. There is a “Joe Story” at the end of the post, so keep reading because it is a good one. Lol!

NOW, let’s talk about how to maximize your wardrobe. There are a couple of things that we all need to do when it comes to our wardrobe/closet. Here are a few tips that I want to give you to get you started. I’m not going to give you 85 ways to have the perfect wardrobe; that is too overwhelming. Instead, here is the baby steps version that will get you started and not have you stressed out.

IN or OUT

This is probably the only stressful (and I just said you weren’t going to get stressed) tip. You need to take one section at a time, such as jeans, pants, tops, sweaters, dresses, jackets, and coats, and decided if you will wear it again. This is the hard part for most of us because we can get attached to clothing. We might have looked amazing in that dress 20 lbs ago, and we want to hang on to it just in case we lose weight. First off, really look at the dress. Is it still in style, good shape, and good quality? Secondly, do you have the closet space to keep clothing that no longer fits???

Pairing down your wardrobe (I’m preaching to the choir, here) will make the items that fit and look amazing on you easier to find. How many times do you shove clothing aside in your closet to find an item that you completely forgot about??

Color Code

I get asked a lot about how I organize my closet. Organized might not be the way that most people would describe it, but it is categorized. As I mentioned above, I have my clothing divided into sections, and then I have grouped by color. When you put together all of your white shirts, black shirts, blue shirts, etc., then you can easily look through that section if you know that you want a certain color to wear. Also, it helps you see if you need to stop buying black tops or if you are in desperate need of a good white button-down.

Don’t Put Baby In A Corner

I’m not sure why this title came to my mind because there is no baby in this post. Haha! What I mean is…don’t pigeonhole your clothing. You can have a beautiful dress that’s perfect for a party, but you can also throw on a denim jacket over that dress and wear it differently. Or, maybe you can put a sweater over the top half of the dress and let the bottom half now look like a skirt.

Maximize Your Wardrobe

The real trick to getting the most out of your wardrobe is to be creative. Play with colors and patterns, and try new combinations. One of the things that I really try to watch about myself as I age is to make sure that I keep an open mind. I hate it when someone says, “I’ve always done it that way.” UGH!!! So, what??? Don’t refuse to try new things. Just because you’ve always done it that way doesn’t mean that there isn’t a better way available. If we never tried new things, we would still be traveling by horse and buggy.

Off-the-shoulder tops are starting to fade from the fashion scene. If you own some, try wearing them as a boatneck instead if you can instead of tossing them out the door. The hot and heavy trend is cutouts for tops and dresses, but some of them are just too revealing for this gurlie. When I came across this ribbed sleeveless cutout tank, I was thrilled to join the trend, look modern and relevant, but still feel covered up.

I just bought this top last week, and it has already sold out except in XS. I told you that this still was extremely popular. Since it is so popular, I had no problem finding lots of similar tops, and some look almost identical. This is one of those times when you need to keep an open mind. You can try the look, and if you don’t like it on you, then send it back. It isn’t a tattoo; it isn’t permanent. LOL!!!

When I was talking above about how to maximize your wardrobe, did you read the part about not pigeonholing items? These crop flare jeans are an item that could easily be labeled as casual, but you can dress these jeans up if you try. I chose to add a pair of wedge Tory Burch black shoes to elevate the look. Black and tan are a great color combination, and the gold medallion on the shoes gives the outfit a dressier look.

This pair is almost sold out, and only a few sizes remain, but this wedge silhouette is popular, and I will find you some similar options. The great thing about wedge shoes is that they are much easier to walk in than heels. But, if you want the medallion, I’ll link to a few that have it, but in a different style.

To tie the look together, I added my Clare V. handbag with my newly purchased purse insert. If you’ve been eyeing this handbag but just couldn’t make yourself pull the trigger, it is on sale at Nordstrom Rack, much cheaper than what I paid for it. It is a floppy bag, though, so you either have to love that or buy an insert. I love that this insert also fits my Neverfull and my new Tory Burch handbag, so I just lift it from one to the other without having to change things out.

Here is the Tory Burch handbag that I was talking about. I LOVE this color since it can be carried year-round. It is a fabulous soothing shade, and IT IS ON SALE!!! You know I love nice things, but I don’t like paying full price for them.

Since you stayed with me to the end, I hope you find this Joe story as funny as I did. I shared with all of you that I was traveling to Nashville this week, and on Sunday night, all of us that are going jumped on a ZOOM call. It was time for me to eat dinner, so I was cooking (gasp) at the stove. I had my AirPods in my ears so that I could hear the other ladies, and I propped my phone up on the stove and leaned it against the wall.

Joe was in the living room, and I am unsure if he knew that I was on ZOOM. As I am talking to the ladies, he walks into the kitchen buck naked and starts to come closer. I happened to glance his way, and my look must have said it all because he backs up some and says, “what’s up?” I was muted on the call, so I said, “I’M ON ZOOM!” He looks over at the phone and says, “is it pointed this way?” Well, duh, since it is propped up against the wall. Lol! He never even flinched as he casually sauntered into the bedroom.

I would have died of embarrassment if that happened to me! Your Joe is priceless! Thanks for sharing! I love raw edge on jeans. I know some don’t and that is the beauty of fashion, get what you like and what looks good on your body type. And currently there seems to be so many options for pants.

I love seeing your posts and I especially enjoy your scripture message each day. However, even though that we’re financially comfortable I don’t have a house big enough to store all the clothes that you seem to buy daily. I have an acquaintance who is on your side and wondered who all can afford Tory Burch shoes it is nice that you offer other similar items. I shop many of the same places but I’m sure with your blog you get great discounts which is wonderful because you do a lot of work on the blog and I appreciate that.

I really like your top but doesn’t it require a special bra so the straps don’t show?

Love the top and bags but I just cannot get onboard with the raw hem pants. I think it may be because I was taught very early to sew and you never, ever left a raw edge like that. I hope that this is a trend that goes away sooner than later.
