When I first started this blog, I wanted to help women feel more confident in their clothing choices. I wanted to help you feel modern and relevant and to help you keep from fading into the background. I also wanted to help you look your best, no matter what your financial circumstances. This week’s post will help you learn to get the most out of your wardrobe.

Learning to shop your closet will help you get the most from your wardrobe. This series is about thinking of more ways to wear your clothing instead of choosing the same combinations over and over again. I am going to be styling this one pair of pants all week long, and hopefully, you will see a lot of possibilities for items that you already own.

Normally, I am not a flannel-wearing gurl. My daughter, however, loves wearing flannel and has even given me some of hers to try and encourage me to embrace this style. I’m not even sure what made me add this wine-colored plaid flannel shirt to my cart, but I am glad that I did.

It was probably the color that first attracted me. The wine color is perfect for fall, and even though it doesn’t show up well in these photos, there is a camel/caramel color stripe in the shirt also. But, it is the softness that really grabbed me once I opened the package. If you’ve been following me for very long, then you know that I am all about items that feel good against my skin.

I am wearing a medium in the shirt, and it fits me great and the buttonholes didn’t gape open. The shirt comes in several different colors if you are not a fan of burgundy. At under $30, I thought this was a great budget-friendly shirt. Also, did you catch my post on budget friendly styles?

Here is the rear view look so that you can get an idea of the length of the shirt from the back.

The messenger bag is a trend this year for handbags. In fact, the western-style is going to be hot this fall, so expect to see lots of western influence hitting your stores. I’ve styled this outfit with two different messenger bags, this one is the most budget-friendly, but it is also the smallest.

I bought this canvas crossbody messenger bag in the khaki color, but it is also available in an olive color. The canvas material is very durable, I used to have a canvas bag years ago similar to this that I carried all of the time. Dang! Why did I get rid of that??? This bag has two snap pockets on the front and strap closure. It is large enough to carry all of your essentials, AND, it is only $37.99!

This high-rise cropped flare pair of jeans is a neutral color that can be worn any time of the year, but it is especially great for fall. I bet a lot of you haven’t tried the cropped flare jean style yet, but it is a very versatile style. You can wear it with sneakers or flats, heels, or ankle boots like I am today.

By the end of the week, you will get an idea of how versatile this style can be, but if you are not a fan or it doesn’t fit your body shape, I’ll link to some similar jeans in a long length. These jeans do run true to size, and I am wearing my usual size 30.

Platform shoes are a trend that most of us will remember from our younger days. Fashion goes round in circles with small tweaks to update the look. I am especially fond of this pair by Steve Madden because I LOVE the color because it goes with anything, and it is a great neutral. I especially love wearing this style of boot with my longer jeans since it helps to keep them from dragging the ground. I’m wearing my usual size 9, and they run TTS.

Let’s change things up just a little. Remember, small tweaks can make a huge difference in the overall look of the outfit. In this photo, the small tweak was tying a knot at the center of the flannel shirt instead of letting it hang out loose. This might not be a style for everyone, but for those who need their legs to look longer, this is an easy fix.

I have also changed handbags. You will see that I am still carrying a messenger bag, but this one is larger and more slouchy.

I really like the distressed, casual look of this messenger handbag! The bag has a shoulder strap for those who like a shoulder bag, but I will probably carry this bag by the handle. This handbag is also made from leather, so it will be equally as durable. The bag is quite a bit larger than the bag I styled earlier, and it will hold more of your stuff.

It will amaze you how one purchase can make you look more modern and relevant. The messenger bag is one of those purchases since it will show that you pay attention to fashion and the latest trends.

I just had to show you these last two photos. You only see the “worthy” photos for the most part, but these last two are typical when you are on a photoshoot. The wind whips your hair around, the sun turns your face beet red, and the rain can drench you until you are sopping wet. In other words, it is a blast!

I think that I would look good with a mohawk, what do you think? Lol?

I’ve noticed the last two weeks that there’s a glitch and when I “Click Here” I get a message “Nothing Found”. This happened twice last week and again today. If I click on your photo instead (of you wearing the cozy sweater), it takes me back to the plum plaid shirt which is what it did last week as well. 🙁

  2. I didn’t get the flannel shirt but once on the JC Penney’s site I found a great deal on v neck sweaters! Yay! Love the Windblown pics!

It’s that very popular platinum transition thats the rage right now.

  4. I am a plaid girl – love the shirt.

I love a soft warm flannel shirt when its chilly! But those pants & shoes really make the outfit, especially w the shirt tied in front! You look very thin & chic! I sure do miss your stories & pics of Joe and your grands!! Why did you stop??☹️

I’m headed to Disney World in December. I have no idea what clothes to take, coming from WV where it’s will be cold by then. I’m 66, unfortunately just wear comfy shoes, but I still want to be cute. Can you help? I love everything you put on, lol.

I am hoping that the flared crop pants will not be a long-lasting trend. I do not feel that they look nice on me or most people. Liked your shirt, however.

Tania, I love this entire outfit so much that I’ve ordered every piece (with the exception of the handbag; I have a wine suede messenger bag that I think will match the shirt to a “T”.). The whole outfit is autumn worthy bringing to mind arts & crafts festivals, country and state fairs, apple and pumpkin festivals and firepits at the wine vineyard. Thank you for putting me in the mood for cooler weather (usually not my favorite time of the year!). You hit a homerun with this combination!

  9. My hubby bought me a flannel shirt for my birthday yesterday. Thanks for the timely post!

  10. I love wearing flannel shirts too! But I’m curious how the Top in Junior size fits compared to women’s size. Is the junior department normally for teenage girls?

  11. Great idea for a series! I love your outfit & you for sharing the hair blowing in the wind pics & yes, you’d rock a Mohawk!

  12. You make outfits look brand new styles, this will be great info to see how you change with the same base.

  13. Hahaha! The mohawk is good for sure!
Love this outfit. Love everything about it; the color, the detail, the boots! Perfect for a casual fall day. I’m with you about not being a huge fan of flannel, but like this shirt for you, I buy them when I like the color.
Good start, can’t wait to see the rest of the week!

  14. I am looking forward to this series. The colors look great. This outfit looks very comfy. Love it.

    1. I’m looking forward to seeing how you style the cropped flare jeans. I’m not a fan of them yet but you make convert me
      😊 Thanks!

  15. I want that second handbag!!!!!!!!!!!!

  16. I too am looking forward to this weeks post on how to shop my closet. I tend to wear the same outfits all the time and need help in learning how to mix it up. You look great in this top and pants. Looking super slim!!

  17. I love this idea, to show 5 ways to style one pair of pants.! Thanks. I am looking forward to it. I am one of those people that gets stuck wearing something over and over.

  18. Thank you so much for this series. I’m looking forward to seeing more “shop your closet” ideas! I have a bit of plaid and a messenger bag. Can’t wait to bring them out again. Also, I love that you often show and talk about how to elongate the legs, neck, etc. Being 5’2” has it’s challenges, lol!

  19. Thank you for the style options and budget friendly is awesome. Question, are the jeans same color as the Old Navy you styled in the spring?

  20. Thanks for targeting some budget friendly items. Always good to see the styles in the brands I generally purchase.

  21. Ginger Hiller says:

YES! I am thrilled that you are doing this series, so “thank you!” Those last two photos are great 😂. In previous years I had a couple of flannel shirts, but I did not reach for them to often, so I donated them. Adding a pair of cropped flair jeans in a neutral, like you have on, to my closet would be a smart thing.

  22. I love every piece! I’m looking forward to this series. I don’t own a plaid flannel but I really love the colors here. So I’m thinking this might be the one because I just bought a pair of wine booties.
