I love versatile clothing and finding items I can wear in multiple ways. While looking for clothing that would work for Thanksgiving (forgiving in the tummy area), I ran across these gorgeous Merlot pieces. I loved them and thought they would be great for Thanksgiving, but then I started wondering if I could wear them in different ways. So, here’s how I mix and match my clothing from Kohl’s to create different looks.

I started this outfit with a mockneck sweater tank from Nine West in Cherry Merlot. This entire outfit is also available in black and a beautiful muted green, but I thought this color looked like fall. Anytime I see a ribbed item, I will size it up, and it is a good thing that I did. I’m wearing a large, and it has a body-skimming fit.

The fine gauge knit duster cardigan matches the sweater tank perfectly. I like a longer cardigan so I can wear them later with leggings and not feel uncomfortable. Plus, a cardigan hides my waist’s sides and helps me appear thinner than I am. I’m wearing a medium, but I think I would have liked it better in a large. I like my cardigans to be a tad oversized, so I can wrap myself up in them if I choose.

Most of the time, I’ll wear a cardigan open, so I will either tie the belts in the back or take them off and cut the belt loops. If you have a cardigan that’s too large for you and doesn’t show your outfit, you can tie the belt in the back and make the cardigan stay open.

Did you notice my block heel neutral-colored pumps? These pumps look so nice with everything, and since they are by Easy Street, they are comfortable also. These run TTS, and I’m wearing my usual size 9.

Let’s mix and match my clothing for a different look. I kept on the sweater tank and matching sweater pants but switched up the top for a different look. These sweater pants are stretchy and comfortable and perfect for Thanksgiving. I wore an outfit almost identical to what I wore last year for Thanksgiving. The outfit was super comfortable, and I wore it a lot at the house. It feels like elevated loungewear, and I like to look nice even if I’m not going anywhere. I’m wearing a medium, and I think I would like them better if I sized them up to a large.

I’m not usually a fan of a marled print, but I loved the look of this wrap sweater so much that I decided to try it. Do you think it was a coincidence that it matched my Merlot outfit perfectly? You don’t have to worry about the end of the belt falling since it is tacked in place. I’m wearing a medium, and it has a relaxed fit, which is perfect since I’ll be wearing it over another top.

I usually keep my jewelry pretty simple for Thanksgiving, so I only added these twisted gold-tone hoops. These are lightweight and don’t hurt your ears.

Let’s switch things up again. Now I’m going to mix and match my clothing for a casual look. I left on the sweater tank and wrap sweater, but I added a pair of flare-leg jeans to my look.

I love these dark-wash flare jeans!!! I think flare jeans are universally flattering, and they sure make wearing boots easier. Dark wash jeans are great for a casual look, but they can be worn dressier also. These high-waisted jeans also come in medium and light wash, and they have the perfect amount of stretch. Yes, you can wear these for Thanksgiving since they have enough “give” to them to keep you comfortable after your big meal. I’m wearing my usual size 8, and they fit me great.

These caramel dress ankle boots are gorgeous in person. I love how they can be worn with jeans or a dress, and they will elevate all your outfits. If you want to see how I wore these boots with a pair of trouser jeans, then check out my elevated fall style with trouser jeans from Kohl’s post.

  7. I love the sweater with the jeans and boots. Looks nice but also very casual. Thanks for the ideas of switching/mix and match. I do that with a lot of my clothers also.

  9. Melaine Ott says:

I like the casual outfit, the jeans and wrap sweater…that’s my style. You look pretty in everything!

  10. Sherry M. Verner says:

I love everything presented . I would like to see more items that could also, be offered to purchased in
Petite sizes, also . It is frustrating to see items that are only in regular sizes where , others and myself ,
are unable to purchase them due, to the sizing .

  11. I like the look with the jeans but I tend to like more casual outfits. The first one looks great on you!

  12. Sheila Martin says:

Wish I had seen this before I shopped at Kohl’s today!! The first outfit is stunning! Not sure I could wear the mock turtleneck. I also thought the wrap sweater looked great. Will print these looks and go back to Kohl’s – especially since I got Kohl’s cash with my purchases today!!

  13. I like the jeans look best because I think it’s the most flattering to those killer legs of yours! I had to laugh when you said you had piles of clothes in your bedroom. So do I and it drives my husband crazy. What do you do with the clothes you purge?

    1. I give away a lot to family and friends. I’m going to have a SHOP on my website and add a few items at a time to it so that my followers can shop for these clothes. That is my plan, I just hope it works.

      1. What a great idea! Please let us know when this feature is up and running!

      2. Peg Gerding says:

It has help me a lot to watch you everyday. I worked full time in healthcare middle management for over 37 years and everyday I had to be put together. It’s taken me some time to learn to dress casual. I like the idea of Jeans, sweater’s and cute jackets. I Don’t feel so bumpy and under dressed. Once you have had to look like you just step out of a magazine everyday it’s hard to change your wardrobe to alot more casual looks. At least for me it is. I like to be put together well. By watching you it has help me still dress nice but learn that casual can be very nice too. You give great wardrobe ideas from head to toe. Thank you!

  14. I love the monotone outfit and the look with the jeans! I’m not sure I would feel comfortable in sweater pants though. Haven’t worn those since college, LOL! All the outfits look great on you!

  15. I am not a fan of monotone. Last outfit is my favorite! Casual and comfy! Looks great on you too!

  16. Since finding your website, 50isnotold, I have purchased so much more clothing! I loved the wine colored coat and boots (that I don’t really need). Shhhhh, don’t let my husband know. One question for you, how big is your closet?!?!

    1. Lol!!! I like your style, Roberta! The answer about my closet is…not big enough. Haha! I have a ton of stuff in the basement and lots upstairs. I also have piles all around my bedroom. After the first of the year, I’m going to do a purge and get rid of a bunch of stuff. I’ve got to make room for new things I’m going to buy.

  17. The jeans and sweater outfit is my fave!! I tend to lean towards more casual outfits. Love Kohls!!!

  18. I like the merlot outfit on you the best. It looks dressy but still comfortable!

  19. Tammy Gravis says:

I love the long cardigan outfit. It looks so nice on you. I may get it.

  20. I love all the options & the outfits would be great as part of a travel capsule!

  21. Maria A Kozan says:

I love mixing and matching. I do it all the time. Love the Merlot color of the three piece.

  22. Joanne W. says:

You look fabulous in the flare-leg jeans! And what a great price!

  23. Donna Ingalls says:

Love the dark washed flare jeans the best. You can dress them up or down so easily.

  24. Love the merlot, looks so comfy! I’m too short to look as cute as you in it, unfortunately. I love the look with jeans, though.

  25. Cara MacNinch says:

You look great in all of the outfits and the color is very becoming. I’m a jeans girl, so I really like the jeans outfit. Have a great day Tania!

  26. I love the color, looks great on you.

  27. NATALIE K says:

I wish you would have shown more outfits from your pieces being mixed & matched!!! Lovely outfits the first two especially!!!

  28. I really like the monochrome look! I wear a simular outfit to work, as I work from home. I look put together from the waist up with jewelry, and my lounge pants match too. I purchased those lounge wear set from Old Navy. I also love the wrap sweater, the buckle detail is super cute.

  29. Gina Luebke says:

Very nice, love the colors! The jeans and boots look is my favorite but I’m definitely a basic kind of girl 😍

  30. Diana Howard says:

I like the last outfit best. I think I’m just a jeans type gal. I love the colors of the sweater tank and wrap 😍 and the ankle boots are way cute!

  31. Lynda Brown says:

Not a fan of 1st look. The 2nd is nice and you always look fantastic in bootcut jeans and pointed toed boots and shoes!

  32. Claudia Tijerina says:

I’m a blue Jean and sweater girl! Love the combinations! The last one is my favorite.

  33. I love the merlot outfit for Thanksgiving!

  34. Barbara Ford says:

Great tip about sizing up on a ribbed top! You always rock the “flare jeans with boots” look. I am only 5’0” so I think flare jeans may not be my best option. But your posts are inspiring!

  35. Love the mock neck, the rest of the outfit would not work for me.

  36. I like the top pieces of the 1st outfit, but I much prefer the jeans look. I also like the outfit in the light green color.

  37. Love how you mixed and matched more outfits with a basic foundation. Please create more posts like this!

  38. Love the merlot pieces!!!

  39. Pamela C. says:

The Merlot outfit is definitely on point for Thanksgiving. Looks pretty and has some give. LOVE IT!

  40. I’ve never thought that I would like a monochromatic color palette (other than occasionally in black) for an outfit. But I really like this one and all of your ideas for using with different pieces. As usual, just love your blog!

  41. I love the look with the sweater & jeans! I think I am too short to pull off the merlot outfit.

  42. I love the Merlot color, what a rich color for fall! Then changing up the outfit with the marled sweater….truly a classy day to evening Thanksgiving look! Thank you for the inspiration!!

  43. Rosalinda says:

Wow the merlot outfit is so beautiful! Love the color! You could also pair the top and duster coat with black leggings or black strechy pants for Thanksgiving 😊 Have a great Tuesday!!

  44. Elizabeth says:

Love the boots! The sweater pants look very awkward in the crotch. Not attractive.

  45. Jennifer S says:

Looks are cute! Are the sweater pants machine washable?

  46. Ginger Hiller says:

While you look very nice in all of the outfits, I prefer the flare legged jeans ensemble. I had a pair of sweater pants last year that I ended up donating because the knees pooched out when I transitioned from sitting to standing. That drove me crazy!

  47. I like the outfit with the jeans the best. I could see myself wearing this as I prepare for 16 people on Thanksgiving. Most of the family come dressed casually so I feel I would also blend in better with my company. Thanks for the try-ons!

  48. Patti Lou says:

I love these pieces from Kohls. The fine gauge duster is fabulous and the cross over is an interesting design. The flare jeans look great on you and they are on sale! There were a couple of reviews that say the jeans run small so I’m not sure what size I’d get, but they are super cute so I might have to pick a size and try them.

  49. Great outfits. I especially like the merlot matching pieces.

  50. You always look so polished! Love the versatility of your outfits!

  51. I love the wrapped sweater! It’s different & it definitely adds interest to the outfit. It’s my favorite piece of these outfits.

  52. I love both outfits, the colors are perfect for fall!

  53. Such beautiful Fall outfits–I see a trip to Khol’s in my future!

  54. Stephanie says:

Comfy is the way to go on Thanksgiving. Give me all the food. Thanks for the options.

  55. Nancy McKenzie says:

I love the Merlot pieces- what a beautiful outfit!

  56. Susan Nothwehr says:

I love you outfit with jeans the best. Since I discovered you, I have been on a shopping rampage, trying to elevate my look. I do notice that I need to refresh my choices and try to be more modern. Thanks for your encouragement!

  57. Especially like the jeans ensemble! However, I “want” those natural color block heels! My lifestyle screams casual as I am retired, hence the jeans! As always, all the outfits look great on you! 😀

  58. Karen Lunde says:

I love the all one color! Such a pretty fall color too. Thank you again for always showing affordable options❤️

  59. I think I like the very first outfit the best. Very classy looking.

  60. I love Kohl’s. Our store has changed a lot since Covid, not as much in the store and it makes me sad but…maybe one day it will be back to it’s full capacity. I love the full knit outfit!

  62. Thanks for your upbeat posts.

  63. Great ideas on how to fix cardigans!

  64. I really need to buy more items that can be mixed and matched.

  65. I love the flare legged jeans. You look really good in them. Still wearing tees and shorts here in Florida! Went up East last week and got to wear long pants and sweaters. It was refreshing to be cold for once!

  66. I love these looks! The color is perfect. They look comfortable while being fashionable at the same time! Thank you!

  67. Jennifer Masters says:

    Great ideas!

  68. Kelly Brooks says:

Love these outfits you look great in both.

  69. Tanya,
I purchased the monogrammed canvas tote from your earlier post and I am waiting anxiously for it to be delivered. Thank you for all the hard work you put in to your daily blog to help us out.

  70. Sue McKamely says:

Prefer the casual look of the dark wash jeans with sweater and top. While I love the dress ankle boots, not sure I could wear the 3-inch heels for more than an hour or two. Thank you for styling both options for us.

  71. Jean Kern says:

    Always enjoy your posts!

  72. I love the wrap sweater and the merlot color, it looks beautiful on you. The jeans outfit looks so comfortable and dressy. Have a blessed holiday season.
