As the temperature drops, my desire for comfortable clothing rises! That’s when soft leggings start replacing my jeans. I know, I know…leggings aren’t pants, but they are a great alternative and appropriate for many occasions. I’ve found that it all depends on the top as to whether I feel confident. So today, I’m sharing a few great tunics and tops to wear with leggings.

I wrote a Rules for Wearing Leggings for Women Over 50 post, and if you haven’t read that already, check it out first. I’m wearing this tunic cowlneck sweater with a pair of crushed velvet leggings for an example of how I would wear leggings for the holidays.

This sweater would give you a similar look to the one above. I love wearing bright colors in fall and winter since it helps with the winter doldrums. This sweater has an interesting zigzag pattern and runs oversized. You will probably want to size down in this top.

Cici Non-Iron Tunic Blouse

Here’s a great blouse that would look fabulous with leggings or jeans. It’s a great length and fully covers the booty area, a must for me! Leggings may not be traditional, but this shirt is as classic as it gets. I love the non-iron material, and it has POCKETS! The covered placket is another nice detail that elevates this from a simple button-down.

Idette Cotton Tunic Shirt

The best top for your leggings depends a lot on where you’re going and the leggings themselves. If I wear more detailed leggings or something very colorful, I tend to wear a neutral shirt. This cotton tunic is simple and elegant. It’s meant to be slightly oversized, so if you want a more fitted look, size down one size.

The previous tunics I’ve shown are all solid colors, so I thought I should show you one with a fun print. The colors in this square neck tunic would look great with so many different leggings, but I know me, I’ll wear it with black ones. Lol!

Wearever Easy-Care Essential Tunic

Here’s another gorgeous loose-fit tunic in an easy-care fabric. This would look great for work or the weekend. I love the rich eggplant color, but it’s also available in white. This shirt is meant to flow loosely, but again, you can size down if you want a more fitted look.

Pintucked Sweater-Tunic from J.Jill

This tunic is very simple, but that’s the beauty of it! The berry color makes up for the simple design, but it is also available in several other colors. I love the length of this one; you would never have to worry about it being long enough to cover your rear.

Long Sleeves Swing A Line Tunic Tops

This swing A-line tunic would be flattering on so many people! I love the length, the V-neck, and the buttons on the cuffs. This color is so pretty, but it comes in several other variations. This top runs true to size and is around $24.

Roll Tab Sleeve Tunic

One of the things I love about this tunic is that it’s a great casual look but isn’t sloppy. You could wear this around the house, running errands, even to lunch with friends, and look very put together. I think the olive is an excellent choice for fall and winter, but there are many others to choose from.

Square Neck Puff Sleeve Shirts

I wanted to show this for the square neckline alone! I don’t know what it is about this shape, but I think it’s so chic. Of course, I love the small puff sleeve detail, and I think this washed blue is very pretty. If it’s not your cup of tea, no worries. There are several others. This is soft and comfortable like a sweatshirt, but you can wear it out and not feel like you’ve just rolled out of bed!

Long Sleeve Tunic Top

This is about as simple as it gets, but I wanted to show you another floral print tunic since I’ve shown so many solids. I suppose if you really didn’t like leggings, you could also wear this over your favorite skinny jeans. It comes in other prints and solids, sells for around $26, and has great reviews. Now’s the time to get out those leggings. Paired with one of these great tops, you’ll be comfortable AND chic.

  1. I Like the A-line one

  2. Yes, leggings are pants, they look great with these tunic tops. Also they look great with a short dress. last summer I bought a red tunic top. I tried it on yesterday and discovered it’s the same length as my shortest dress! haha maybe it was actually a dress and I just thought it was a sweater. Anyway it looks great. Thanks for this post Tania.

I love tunics and leggings but am always mindful of the saying “ three things never lie, children, drunks and leggings”.
