Getting dressed in the morning doesn’t have to be hard. In the past, I’ve been known to wear the same outfit throughout the season without switching up the items since they looked good together. But, I quickly got bored of the look and started experimenting for more variety. I’m going to simplify your life by sharing four easy steps to create a fall outfit.

Four Easy Steps To Create A Fall Outfit

You are going to laugh at how simple this formula is and how easy it will be to create your own go-to outfits. Remember, I’m just like you, so don’t expect anything too complicated or fancy.

Step One – Pick The Star Of The Outfit

I usually consider the top to be the star of the outfit. Ocassionally, the star of the outfit will be a blazer/cardigan or a piece of statement jewelry. So, the first thing you need to decide is what is the star of your outfit.

The star of this outfit is the Long Sleeve Cardigan Sweater with Chest Pockets. The gold buttons create a lot of visual interest against the black backdrop of the sweater. I love this cardigan since it can be dressed up or down and worn as a top or open as a cardigan. Sweaters are what I wear most in the fall. There are so many sweaters to pick from, such as turtlenecks, Fairisle, cardigans, oversized, etc., so you are bound to find something you like.

Step Two – Pick The Base

Unless you’re wearing a dress, you’ll need to add a base or bottom piece to your outfit. In the fall, jeans or corduroy pants are my usual go-to base pieces. I love these Flare High Rise Jeans since they fit close to the body above the knee and then flare out. The slight flare helps to balance out your shoulders and your hips and is generally flattering for most women.

Step Three – Accessories

After you pick a star and a base, you need to add accessories to finish the outfit. The most important accessory will be shoes followed closely by a handbag. The Western Slouch Heeled Booties and Faux Leather 4 Poster Handbag pull the outfit together with all the black. The booties add height and elongate your legs, and they work great with the flare leg. The handbag has gold trim which also ties in with the gold buttons on the cardigan.

Step Four – The Icing – Jewelry

I’ve always thought of jewelry as being the icing on the cake. Cake alone is tasty, but adding icing takes it to another level. The same can be said about an outfit. This outfit looked great without the jewelry, but it looks polished and put-together with it. My go-to jewelry for every day is the Colette Large Hoop Earrings, the Lex Chain Bracelet in Gold, and the Michele Watch w/Diamonds.

  6. Yes, I decorate my yard for Halloween; I have my grandchildren come over and get to hang little foam pumpkins on the trees in the front yard. I bought table decorations, small foam coasters. I punched a small hole in each one put a string through it, and hand them to the grandkids. they love it!

  7. Good to know and to follow your recommendations cute pillows too!

  8. Vicki Farrell says:

I agree on the fall decor. Mine is fairly generic and not necessarily Halloween. Love the process for selecting an outfit. Makes it sound simple and easy to do.

  9. Cute outfit and thanks for the outfit ideas.

  10. Jean Provine says:

Perfect four steps! I’ve never thought of it the way you listed, but it’s actually the steps I follow anyways lol – except I don’t do much icing besides rings. Love that cardigan!

  14. Beautiful outfit. Simple and classy! Sometimes I overthink getting dressed. Thank you for breaking it down to four easy steps!

  15. Love this easy way to create a look. I also like to switch things up by adding a pretty scarf. Maybe you would consider doing a post on how to tie a scarf and do’s and don’ts of choosing a scarf for outfits. (When is a scarf too long for an outfit?)
    P.S. Love your pillows!

  16. I love your little Halloween pillows. I don’t do much decorating either as I did plenty for years as an elementary school teacher.
I really like your outfit inspo and the price can’t be beat. The sweater looks way more expensive than it is. the shorter style is trendy this year – next year sweaters will be down to our knees again haha.

  17. Roberta Schwandner says:

I really don’t like cold weather, however I do love sweaters and boots.

  18. I am glad you are not sick and just simply overslept. My Mama is the WORST. The buys an outfit at whatever store, buys it all- as shown on mannequin and hangs it up that way….she wears it on repeat. I need to do a better job of mixing myself.

  19. I agree with your outfit advice. I’m not a big Halloween person. I live in an over 55 community and we don’t get any trick or treaters.

  20. You make it sound and look so simple. I will have to try this. I like your outfit. The jeans look very nice. I like the dark wash and the flare.

  21. So practical and easy to accomplish! Love the outfit! It gives off a “quiet luxury” vibe. I have a similar black sweater……what a great way to style it!

  22. Susan Riley says:

Great advice to choose your top first then go from there. I enjoyed this post and advice.

  23. Great informative post, I always learn something from you! Since you educated me on what a lady jacket is Iast year I love them! I find them very versatile to use with jeans or dress pants!

  24. Great advice. You look so polished and sharp! Have a wonderful day.

  25. I follow your same decorating ideas for Fall. No scary, gory decorations around my home. So, the yard is no different. I decorate my porch with seasonal colors and have a Halloween garden stake in my flower bed.

  26. You make it all sound so easy!! We should all be able to follow these steps.

  27. You look so chic. I love the outfit and accessories. I agree about flare and bootleg jeans being so flattering.

  28. Terry Rudd says:

I thought that outfit was the “10” you looked so great. and anyone could wear the pieces you had on. you did an awesome job. thank you

    1. Thanks!!! I love starting the day with a compliment. 🥰

  29. Just four steps! Love it.

  30. I’m with you!! I always think it would be fun to decorate the yard for Halloween but then there’s the “put it away” part. I’m kinda the same with Christmas. I’ll enjoy everyone else decorating.

    1. 🤣🤣🤣 I would decorate the heck out of my yard if someone else would come and put it away. 🤣

      1. Susan in the 'burbs says:

There are people who do that as a business. I’m tempted every year to hire someone to come over after Christmas and put away the decorations! I haven’t done it yet, but I was thinking about it just in the past week or two.

I enjoyed this post. That’s pretty much my process, but sometimes it is, shall we say, “iterative.” LOL. Sometimes I a color column, top & pants, is very basic but together they are the star. Most of the time with a color column, I’ll add a top layer. All the best to you and thanks for the ideas.

  31. I love this simple formula! I struggle with putting outfits together so I’m going to try it!

  32. Your ghost pillows are cute however I don’t decorate for Halloween. I really don’t care for this so called holiday. My favorite is thanksgiving

  33. So easy! I get dressed upside!!

  34. The older I get, the less I like to decorate. LIFE.

  35. I don’t decorate for Halloween. All the orange and black is just ick. I just like some neutral fall decor for October and November. I’m having a hard time with all these giant spiders people have out this year. 🫣 LOL!

  36. Pretty cardigan sweater

  37. Love the purse. I just ordered me one.

  38. Carol Ann Jablonski says:

You broke down the components to dressing, whether for work or play, very well.

  39. Patt Dyal says:

I love the cardigans with the pretty buttons. I invested in several light weight cardigans for Spring and Summer. I love the black and gold buttons. Looks very classy!!
I don’t do Halloween. But I do Fall beginning in September and down it comes the day after Thanksgiving. I decorate inside and out. It takes me a couple of days to get it all completed.

  40. I no longer decorate for Halloween. However, when my son was small, I added happy Halloween items to my fall decorating. I’m not into scarey!

My current decorating focus is all about fall. I love the fall colors.

    I enjoy your posts!

  41. Ginger Hiller says:

What cute ghost pillows! The only holiday we decorate for is Christmas, which we will be doing in a few weeks. We live on a private dirt road with only two school aged kids on the road, so there’s really no reason to decorate. Christmas is our very favorite holiday, so it gets a lot of attention. I like your steps for creating an outfit!

  42. Like you I do a little for Halloween but go all out for Christmas

  43. Becky Kerwin says:

Thanks for making it easier to get out the door!

  44. Okay, that’s funny, I thought I need to re-subscribe to your blog because I didn’t get the email this morning, so I re-subscribed! Can’t do without my daily Tania fix, ha!

    1. Lol! Nope, it was just me not being on time. 🙄
