Simple, Elegant Dresses for Wedding Guests Over 50
Wedding season is near, and wedding save-the-dates and invitations have started to arrive in the mail. This post will be helpful if you’ve sent in your RSVP and are now clueless about what you should wear. I’m featuring three elegant dresses for wedding guests to wear, and I’m sure you’ll find something you’ll like.
I typically begin my search for a dress after learning details about the wedding day. I like to know the type of location (a ballroom, a country club, a rustic venue like a barn, etc.) and what month of the year (so I know how warm or cool to dress). I also consider if the couple has mentioned a dress code on their invitation.
Once I have all of those details, it’s time to start shopping! If you are overwhelmed with the wide selection of dresses out there, start with one of the dresses below. They are versatile, flattering, and affordable, and all three are available in a variety of colors.
Elegant Dresses for Wedding Guests
Emerald A-Line Midi Dress
The first dress I have styled is this beautiful deep green a-line dress. It features a v-neckline and elbow length sheer sleeves. The lace material is very fitting for a wedding and makes the dress feel feminine. Since wedding days can be very long, it’s important to choose a comfortable dress. This one checks that box since the material has a lot of stretch.
I paired this knee length dress with this stunning emerald green velvet and gold clutch. It has a detachable gold chain allowing you to carry it on your shoulder, or you can remove it as I did. It’s just the right size for my phone, key, lipstick, and tissues! If you choose a different color dress, this clutch also comes in black, pink, gold, and maroon. I love the art-deco look of this clutch, and I think it makes a gorgeous statement.
If you’re wearing this to a wedding in a cooler month or in the evening, you may even consider grabbing a wrap to go around your shoulders. I thought the v detail on the back was super pretty as well. If you have insecurities about your legs or knees, this dress is a great length as it shows off just the right amount of leg. Here are a few wraps you could throw over your shoulders in the cool of the evening.
Your friends and family will think you spent a lot more on this dress than you actually did, since it only costs $35! It also comes in so many other gorgeous colors like navy, red, gray, purple, and pink. This is a dress you can re-wear in the future, as this fabric and silhouette is appropriate for weddings in all four seasons.
Sleeveless Navy Lace Cocktail Dress
I absolutely love this next dress! After seeing this dress had 18,000 4.5 star ratings on Amazon, I knew I had to try it. This sleeveless lace cocktail dress is so fun, flattering, and full of personality. After all, we don’t have to dress boring and matronly just because we are over 50!
The lace at the neck and the shoulders make the dress cool and breathable for spring and summer weddings without being too revealing. You could definitely get by with wearing a traditional nude bra with this dress, but you could also do a strapless (this one is my favorite!) if you’re worried about your straps being seen.
It pairs so perfectly with this acrylic flower clutch with gold accents. It has several different colors of flowers, making it versatile and able to be carried with a wide variety of outfits long after the wedding is over. Can you believe this clutch cost under $24?
I love it from the back just as much as the front! The slip ends several inches before the lace allowing the details of the lace on the hem to shine. It does hug the body a little more than the first one, so you may want to consider adding shape wear.
I think navy is a very safe color choice for a wedding, especially since it is flattering with so many different skin tones and hair colors. If you don’t love navy or you’re trying to match the wedding’s color palette, this dress comes in 19 different shades. I am also a big fan of the blush, light blue, and light violet for spring weddings. Bonus…the clutch would match any of those colors!
Champagne Lace A-Line Cocktail Dress
The last dress I tried was this champagne lace a-line cocktail dress. I know many of my readers don’t like to show off their arms, but with this dress, you can choose the sleeve length. It comes in sleeveless, short sleeves, or 3/4 sleeves (like I am wearing), so you can choose the sleeve length you are comfortable with. There is an attached ribbon bow that helps to define your waist.
How stunning is this glitter and marble acrylic clutch? It looks so chic and elegant. I can see myself wearing this on a date night with Joe, going out to dinner with the girls! The chain is detachable, but I find this style easier to carry with the strap.
I wore my regulday-to-dayday bra with this, but if I were truly heading to a wedding, I would instead wear my strapless bra. I added my favorite Cross Charm on a Gold Vermeil Chain and the long Tania Coin Pearl necklace to tie in the clutch and give this dress a little oomph!
Which dress was your favorite? Do you have any weddings to attend this year?

I really like to green and navy. Those colors look the best on you!!!
Love, Love the green dress!!
I love the green and navy. The ivory dress is beautiful but think you would look better in another color 😉
The emerald green is very becoming and I love the style. I usually don’t think about green but I like it!
I love dress #2 the navy one looks stunning on you!
That blue dress is fire (as the kids say :-)). Lovely!
The navy is the winner for me, then the green one. I think the tan one doesn’t do you justice.
I have the navy one that I purchased a few years ago that’s almost identical to this one.
1st dress is my favorite
Very flattering on you
Not a fan of the sleeveless one
All of the purses are great
Thanks for this timely post
Beautiful dresses. I am mother of the bride and grandmother of the bride. Both are outside. on is in at a mountain park and the other is at a home on a lake. Looking for casual has been a challenge.
Another thing I like to know about a wedding is what color the bridesmaids’ dresses are. I don’t want to be the pitiful old lady who is wearing the same color and everyone thinks I am an old bridesmaid wannabe!!!
Lol! Francie, If I am the mother of the bride or groom, then I try to match the color scheme of the wedding. Otherwise, I wear whatever I like since I won’t be in the wedding photographs.
The navy lace dress is my favorite. It is stunning.
All lovely choices and you wear them beautifully.
The navy was a winner in my book!
Beautiful dresses Tania! Elegant for a wedding or an anniversary celebration!
I can certainly picture you and Joe out on date night wearing the blue one.
You are the best!
Like the navy one the best. Doesn’t feel like mother of the bride like the other two. I wouldn’t wear it personally since it doesn’t have sleeves.
Love all the dresses!! Great wedding ideas!!
The navy dress is my favorite. I love all the clutches!!!
I love the navy
I like the navy dress the best, but just the thought of lace makes my skin scratchy, so none of these would work for me. I’m glad I don’t have any weddings coming up😉
Thank you for this post. My daughter is getting married at the end of October. It is going to be a fairly casual wedding and I think any of these dresses would work for me as MOB.
I really like the first one.
The Emerald dress is my favorite. You look fabulous in all
of them. Good luck deciding but you can’t go wrong with
any of them. Have fun at the wedding.
All of those dresses are really pretty. I would even wear them to church.
For me my favorite was the green. They’re all great on you.
I love the green and navy dresses. The 3rd, not so much. It looks a bit too young girly with the ribbon belt. You look very nice in all of them. And the prices are great.
These look lovely, but I’m just not a lace girl. But thanks for highlighting some really affordable choices!
Pretty dresses and I like the wrap choices.
Beautiful dresses. Thanks for sharing.
Love all the dresses and that they are very affordable, but my favorites are the green and navy blue dresses. The clutch with the green dress is very classy.
Love the blue!
My daughter is getting married in April and I’ve been looking for a clutch to go with my gown. I love the flower clutch! It’s already in my Amazon cart.
Thanks for these suggestions! I have a wedding at a local venue in Nashville in late March. Attire is creative cocktail. Will it be chilly? Dress for spring? I am 67; bride is 34. Struggling with what to wear!
Jane, it will probably still be chilly in March. I would dress for spring, especially if the wedding is indoors. Take a wrap or a coat for when you are outside.
Love the Champagne Dress!!!
The navy dress suited you the best! It provided a pop of colour.
The champagne one washed you out…terribly.
Cindi, the champagne color isn’t for me, but it would look beautiful on someone with different coloration. I’m trying to style outfits for others, and it is hard to do.
These are all so pretty. I have a wedding to attend later this year too and these would be lovely for that.
Going to a late spring wedding and I think any of these dresses would work.
The green one is absolutely beautiful. Perfect color for you.
These lace dresses, jewelry and accessories are beautiful. I like that the dresses are very reasonably priced especially if you end up only wearing a “dressy” dress once.
Love the shoes too!
All three are great choices! LOL I own the navy dress but in black!!! I love it. Thanks again for another great post.
My favorite was the navy sheath dress!
I’m going to a wedding in Charleston on June 17. The invitation says Southern Formal and that dresses must be midi or formal.
These are very nice and love the navy! For those of us who have a hard time finding the right dress, I can always rely on Dillards. They usually have a great selection and clearance.
Beautiful dresses! Love the different options 👍🏻
I liked all the dresses, but you looked fantastic in the navy one. Love your shoes too.
I have already been looking for an early summer wedding dress. But it will be outdoors. So… dressy sundress type?
Hi Tania ,
You looked the best in the Navy Lace dress! How can I return back to your blog after seeing this dress without having to scroll back down from the beginning? Many Thanks. 😘

I am considering the long sleeve dress for a wedding this year!
You look great thanks
Love the wedding guest dresses. I have two nieces getting married this year! Need ideas!
