DO YOU HAVE AN OWNER’S MANUAL

Some of you might know that my daughter lives in Alaska. It is a gorgeous state, with lots of panoramic views. Alaska is the perfect state for anyone who is wanting to take in the scenery and explore the great outdoors. No, this is not a paid advertisement for the State of Alaska, but I wanted to give you an idea of the area where my daughter lives.

My daughter originally went to Alaska to study for Marine Biology. She has always loved sharks (nothing like her mother) and the University of Alaska has a fantastic Marine Biology department. She soon fell in love with the people and the state, and she turned into an outdoor exploring type of person. She loves going to the Glaciers, exploring the ice caves, going on hikes and long walks in the woods, and sending time on the water and coastlines looking at the marine life.

So, when she asked for a GoPro camera to record some of her adventures, we bought one for her. The idea was a good one, but the recordings never happened. She didn’t even record the time that she jumped off the side of a mountain to go parasailing. Whew, thankfully, I never knew that was something that she was going to do, so I never worried about her safety.

Fast forward several years, and Joe decides that he would like to use the GoPro to record his airplane flights. We got the GoPro from my daughter and was surprised when we opened it to find that there were a ton of options and parts that came with it.

I am not saying that every male is the same as my husband, but the owner’s manual is something that he NEVER touches. The only time that he will open an owner’s manual is when he is working on a piece of equipment, and he needs specific details. Otherwise, he prefers to “wing” it.

Last week (here) on the Sunday blog post, I talked about how often we use our phones. I went over some of the things that we use our phones for, and I talked about how much they cost. We each use our phone for different reasons, and some of us may use them in ways that others didn’t even know was possible. But, even the ones who use their phones for multiple purposes are probably not even beginning to scratch the surface of all of the features and possibilities of the phone.

It is just a guess on my part, but I bet the smartphone that I have beside me, is capable of performing over a hundred different tasks. While I use my phone for a lot of things, I bet I only utilize about a tenth of its true capability. One of the reasons is, I’ve never read the owner’s manual.

When I buy a new phone, I open the box, make sure that it is charged, and start playing on it right away. And, if I purchase a new stove, refrigerator, television, couch, etc., the same is true. It doesn’t matter if I spent thousands of dollars on a new car, I will still push the button (no more keys) and start the car. I will drive a brand new car home from the car dealers without ever touching the owner’s manual.

Because of our (I’m including you also) aversion to owner manuals, we are missing out on a lot of the good stuff. We might know the highlights, but we miss out on some of the best and most useful details.

Have you ever stopped to think where an owner’s manual comes from? An owner’s manual is created by the maker of the product, so you are not going to get an owner’s manual for a smartphone that was created by a toaster company. I wouldn’t trust an owner’s manual for my brand new car if it was created by a carpet manufacturer. I want specific instructions on how to use the product that was purchased, and the creator knows the product better than anyone.

Wouldn’t it be nice if “WE” had an owner’s manual? Something that we could read and research so that we didn’t miss out on all of the best stuff and most useful detail! OH WAIT!!! We DO have an owner’s manual. We were created, and our creator gave us an owner’s manual that we can use to navigate life. Our owner’s manual is called the Bible.

Are You Scared?

Joshua 1:9

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Are You Worried?

Matthew 6:34

34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Don’t Know How To Pray?

Matthew 6:6

But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

Worried About Finances?

Deuteronomy 28:12

12 The Lord will open the heavens, the storehouse of his bounty, to send rain on your land in season and to bless all the work of your hands. You will lend to many nations but will borrow from none.

Today, take out your owner’s manual and see what instructions that you might have been missing. I am going to leave you with one last instruction that I found in my manual:

Psalms 1:1-3

Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful; But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree
Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper.

Have A Blessed Day!

This is so good. God gives us the instructions on how to deal with everything and situation while here on earth. If more people would read and apply the teachings from the Bible what a better place this world would be for all of us.

The Bible is the only owners manual needed. Amen?

But I will say, as a semi OCD person as most RNs tend to be, I like owner’s manuals but I despise storing them so when we got our motorhome which came with a ginormous satchel of paper manuals, I took an old iPad and installed an app called GoodReader and I downloaded every single one of those manuals as a pdf. This is not a plug for the app but it’s an organized person’s dream come true. It lets you organized PDFs into folders. So I created a folder for all the various categories of stuff in the coach. Like kitchen, audio video, plumbing etc. I was so jazzed by that I did the same thing for my house. Love it. The motorhome satchel now lives in the garage and the bazillion home appliances manuals are filed now with the store receipt and I never have to dig one out to figure out how to change the time on my stove.

I believe my method was inspired by Holy Scripture. The Lord has given us every guideline for life in one safe and compact place. And I put one of them on an iPad too. For travel. Don’t tell anyone but I have five iPads. Limiting what’s on them keeps me focused on what I’m doing so my Bible is on a mini iPad with a few books from Charles Stanley and Chuck Smith. I’m thinking of putting Audi books for devotions on it.

Have a blessed day, and keep those poor misguided folks who are getting themselves arrested in your prayers. Violence solves nothing.
