Best Underwear for Women Over 50 2024

1. Comfort is Key: Go for the Softest Fabrics

First things first—comfort is non-negotiable. Gone are the days when we sacrificed comfort for style. I don’t know about you, but if something feels itchy, tight, or constricting, I don’t care how cute it is, I’m not wearing it! As we age, our skin becomes more sensitive, so choosing the right fabric becomes essential.

Hanes Cotton Stretch Briefs

Cotton underwear is always a good choice. It’s breathable, soft, and won’t irritate your skin. You can never go wrong with cotton for everyday wear. One of my favorite brands for comfortable cotton underwear is Hanes. Their Cotton Stretch Briefs are an absolute staple in my drawer. They come in a variety of colors, and the stretch material gives them just the right amount of flexibility without feeling tight.

Soma Intimates Modal Panty

If you’re looking for something a little more luxurious but still comfy, consider modal fabric. This material is soft, breathable, and drapes beautifully against the skin. Brands like Soma Intimates carry modal panties that are perfect for when you want that extra touch of softness.

2. Supportive and Flattering: High-Waisted Options

Let’s talk about support. For many of us, a little extra support around the tummy area is much appreciated, especially when wearing dresses or high-waisted pants. A good pair of high-waisted briefs can work wonders for smoothing things out without feeling like you’re wearing a full-on girdle.

Bali Light-Control Brief

One of my go-to pairs is from Bali. Their Light-Control Brief offers light shaping without being too tight. I love how they smooth over my tummy and hips, but I can still breathe in them, which is always a bonus, right?

Soma Vanishing Tummy Modern Brief

If you need a bit more tummy control, I recommend the Soma Vanishing Tummy Modern Brief. It’s like Spanx, but for everyday wear—light support, no bulging, and no uncomfortable digging into your waist.

3. Keep It Seamless for No-Show Lines

I don’t know about you, but I’m not a fan of visible panty lines. With so many cute and fitted styles of clothing out there, the last thing we want is to ruin the look with obvious underwear lines! That’s where seamless underwear comes in handy.

Commando Bikini

Seamless panties are designed to be practically invisible under your clothes, making them perfect for fitted dresses, leggings, or even skinny jeans. One of my favorite brands for this is Commando. Their classic thong and bikini styles are not only invisible, but they also feel like you’re wearing next to nothing. It’s underwear freedom, ladies!

Soma Vanishing Edge Panties

If thongs aren’t your style, don’t worry—there are plenty of seamless full-coverage options too. Soma offers their Vanishing Edge Panties, which feature a silicone strip along the edges to prevent them from riding up. These are great for staying in place, and trust me, they really do vanish under your clothes.

4. A Touch of Elegance: Lace That Feels As Good As It Looks

I know we’ve been talking a lot about comfort, but who says you can’t feel a little glamorous too? Just because we’re over 50 doesn’t mean we have to sacrifice style. Lace can add a touch of femininity and elegance to your underwear, but let’s be real—scratchy lace is a no-go.

Natori Bliss Perfection Lace Trim Brief

The trick is to find lace underwear that’s soft and smooth, so you get the best of both worlds. Natori makes some beautiful lace briefs that are soft, stretchy, and oh-so-pretty. Their Bliss Perfection Lace Trim Brief is one of my favorites for when I want something a little more special. It’s lace without the itch!

Hanky Panky Signature Lace Thong

If you’re looking for a lace thong, I recommend Hanky Panky. Their Signature Lace Thong is iconic for a reason—it’s comfortable, sits flat against your skin, and comes in so many gorgeous colors.

5. For Active Days: Look for Moisture-Wicking Fabrics

Ladies, I’m going to be honest—whether you’re exercising or just dealing with a hot flash (because yes, those are still a thing at our age), you need underwear that can handle it. Moisture-wicking fabrics are a godsend for those days when you’re feeling extra warm. They keep you dry and comfortable, even when you’re on the move.

Jockey’s Microfiber Performance Briefs

For my active days, I reach for Jockey’s Microfiber Performance Briefs. They’re moisture-wicking, lightweight, and breathable, so they keep me feeling fresh whether I’m going for a walk or running errands on a hot day. Plus, they have a no-slip design, which means no riding up or adjusting all day long.

Under Armour’s Pure Stretch Hipster.

If you’re a gym-goer or prefer sporty styles, you might like Under Armour’s Pure Stretch Hipster. They’re designed for performance, but they’re also soft and comfortable enough for daily wear.

6. The Right Fit: Knowing Your Size

Now, I can’t talk about the best underwear without mentioning fit. Ladies, please make sure you’re wearing the right size! Ill-fitting underwear is not only uncomfortable, but it can also ruin the look of your clothes. If your underwear is too small, it can create unflattering bulges and be downright uncomfortable. It won’t stay in place if it’s too big, which leads to constant adjusting (and we don’t need that!).

Take a few minutes to measure yourself properly. Every brand has different sizing, so check the size charts before you order. A well-fitting pair of underwear can boost your confidence and make you feel fabulous all day long!

7. Treat Yourself to Quality and Get Rid of Old Pairs

One thing I’ve learned over the years is that investing in good-quality underwear is worth it. Cheap panties might seem like a good deal at the time, but they tend to wear out quickly, stretch out of shape, and lose their elasticity. You don’t have to spend a fortune, but a few pairs of quality underwear can last longer, feel better, and give you that “put-together” feeling.

Brands like SomaNatori, and Spanx offer high-quality underwear that feels luxurious but also lasts. Trust me, once you’ve experienced the difference, you won’t want to go back to anything else.

Raise your hand if it’s been a minute since you bought new panties. Did you know that if you’ve had your panties for 6 – 12 months, experts say to toss them? I think I had some pairs that remembered pay phones before I saw that tip and finally decided to clean out my drawer! Now, I replace mine yearly. See the rest of the items I replace yearly here.

8. Understanding the Different Types of Women’s Underwear

There are so many options out there, and each style serves a different purpose. It’s easy to get overwhelmed, but knowing the pros and cons of each type can help you choose what works best for your body, outfit, and activity level.

1. Bikini

EBY Bikini

The bikini style is a classic that offers moderate coverage, with a cut that sits below the waist and has higher-cut leg openings. It’s a versatile option that works for most body types, and it’s great for everyday wear. If you’re looking for something that provides coverage but still feels a little flirty, bikini underwear is your friend.

Pros: Versatile, comfortable, and works well under most outfits.
Cons: May not provide as much support or tummy coverage as other styles.

2. Briefs

Soma Microfiber Modern Brief

Briefs—sometimes referred to as granny panties, but I like to call them comfort essentials—are perfect for when you want maximum coverage. They have a high-rise waistband that covers the tummy and full coverage in the back, making them a go-to option for comfort and support. You can find them in a variety of fabrics, including cotton and microfiber.

Pros: Full coverage, great for support and smoothing under clothing.
Cons: Not the best option for tighter outfits, as they can sometimes show lines unless you go with a seamless material.

3. High-Waisted Briefs

Wacoal B-Smooth High Cut Briefs

A variation of the traditional brief, high-waisted briefs have become super popular in recent years. These sit even higher on your waist, often reaching up to your belly button or beyond, offering excellent tummy control. They’re perfect for wearing under high-waisted jeans, skirts, or dresses when you want a smoother silhouette.

Pros: Excellent for shaping and tummy control, provides a vintage-inspired look.
Cons: May feel too restrictive for some women.

4. Boyshorts

RUXIA Women’s Boyshort Panties

If you love a bit more coverage but want something different from briefs, boyshorts are a fantastic option. They’re designed to resemble men’s boxer briefs and offer full coverage of the hips and rear, with a lower rise. They’re often seamless and smooth under clothes, making them perfect for fitted skirts or dresses.

Pros: Full coverage, great for smoothing, and comfortable.
Cons: Can ride up on certain body types or under tighter clothing.

5. Thongs

If you’re looking to avoid visible panty lines (VPL), thongs are the go-to option. They provide minimal coverage with a slim back that eliminates any chance of your underwear showing through. They’re perfect for fitted pants, leggings, or body-hugging dresses.

Pros: No visible panty lines, great for fitted clothing.
Cons: Less comfortable for extended wear, may not provide enough coverage for everyone’s taste.

6. Hipsters

Wacoal Feeling Flexible Hipster Briefs

As the name suggests, hipsters sit right on your hips and offer a moderate amount of coverage. They’re a nice middle ground between bikini and boyshorts—offering a little more coverage than a bikini but without the full coverage of briefs. They work great under low-rise jeans or pants.

Pros: Moderate coverage, comfortable for everyday wear.
Cons: Can sometimes bunch up or shift during the day if not the right fit.

  2. If you like 100% cotton, I highly recommend April Cornell’s “Kimmie”.

  3. Lots of information. Thanks.

  4. Now that was very informative! Thank you!

  5. I recently cleaned out my panty drawer and did a big replacement. I tend to like Warners cotton hipster a lot right now! I need to try Soma as they seem to have great reviews.

  6. sue koren says:

My mom always said to take your old underwear on vacation and then just throw it out instead of bringing it home!

    1. That’s a good one. 🤣

  7. sue koren says:

I like warners brand a lot.

  8. Thanks for the scam alert! Yep! I cleaned out my underwear drawer months ago and threw away (gasp) 20 year old underwear! I bought Warners hicut underwear and I do like them but I am going to try Soma now.

  9. Yep, cleaned out my underwear drawer months ago and threw away (gasp), 20 year old underwear! I ended up buying Warners hicut underwear and I do like them, but now I am going to try Soma.

  10. Thank you for this blog! I also have some ancient undies, and am going to sort right now. I do have a couple pairs of tummy control briefs, and they are wonderful. Not like wearing a girdle, but great under snug dresses or pants.

Thanks also for the scammer warning. I never open texts or emails any more unless it is from a contact, and if then the language patterns are not familiar, I don’t reply. Facebook has had some accounts scammed, and I’ve replied to some until it doesn’t sound like the person I know.

  11. I need to go through my underwear drawer and throw away those panties that are at least 15 years old, don’t I?

  12. NATALIE K says:

The BEST Panties and Bra’s I’ve ever wore and adore are from SOMA!!!

  13. I found Soma when I was in Las Vegas one year. I only buy their vanishing edge underwear and have been wearing these panties for over 20 years. I hate panty lines and I find that thongs are not comfortable. They have so many colours and pretty ones. I live in Canada so have to order online from the US, however the quality is worth it and they last a long time. I have looked for similar ones but always go back to Soma.

  14. Thanks for the tip about the scam. I have gotten suspicious emails about a bill that’s due? I knew I didn’t deal with that company so I reported it as spam. About the underwear did you forget the French cut style of underwear? I like Jockey’s but I think Hanes makes them too. I don’t get rid of underwear after a year because I have so many that they don’t even get worn every week. I recycle my old cotton ones by wearing them to bed. I don’t like anything tight when I go to sleep.

  15. Valery Reach says:

I have spent all of my adult life searching for the perfect underwear LOL The most important piece of clothing by far! I will definitely be trying some of these suggestions. Thanks!

  16. Ok, I think it’s time for me to replace my underwear. Pretty sure I’ve had most for over a year. I’m going to try some of the better ones. I’m tired of so-so panties.

  17. Thanks for the scam update. Scary! Really good post on underwear, too. Exactly what I need to shop for now!

  18. Great article! I love Natori bras and panties, they feel like you are wearing nothing, super soft. I stockpile panties because 10 +/- does not change size needed. I buy when they are on sale and clearance, then store them in a pretty hat box in the closet, until I need to refresh the lingerie drawer. Have a blessed day!
