I get texts and emails all of the time from ladies asking me how to “shop your closet.” It is really easy to shop your closet, but there is a couple of tips that you need to incorporate so that you don’t look like you are wearing the same outfit over and over again. It is really easy to fall into a rut when you reach for the same items repeatedly.

I wrote an article about this once. But, there are a couple of reasons you reach for the exact same thing when you shop your closet.

It’s Easy To Shop Your Closet

I get it! If you’ve worn a top and a pair of pants multiple times, then you don’t have to overthink if they go together. You’ve already styled the outfit before, so you know they match each other. You walk into your closet, you grab a couple of items, and you’re out the door. I’m not saying this is a bad thing, but you don’t need to make it such a habit that you never experiment.

It Looks Good On Me

This is one of the great things that happen when you shop your closet. You have already worn the outfit, so you know that you look good in it. But, that doesn’t mean that it is the only way that it will look good on you. Maybe you are wearing a pair of jeans and a shirt, could adding a denim jacket or a sweater make the outfit look even better?

I’m Running Late

Okay, I’ll give you some leeway on this one. There are always going to be times when you’ve only got a few minutes to get dressed. That is when you shop your closet and grab something that you know works for you. You don’t want to be experimenting when you are in a time crunch. There are a lot of times when I will go through several tops and bottoms before I get the look that I want. That process takes more time than you have if you are needing to be out of the door in under 5 minutes.

I’m Lazy

Am I stepping on a few toes? My toes are screaming in pain too because I am guilty of this. There are times when I just don’t want to be bothered to come up with a new outfit, and reaching for a tried and true look is easy. I don’t have to worry if it fits, or if it matches. If you shop your closet this way, then I suggest that you do this mostly when you aren’t leaving the house. I’m not saying that you can’t wear the same outfit repeatedly, I’m just saying that loungewear and a stay at home outfit don’t matter as much if it is exactly the same as what you wore the week before.

Before I start, let me ask you, do you know that I do a STEALS AND DEALS post almost every Saturday? This is a fun post, but it is ONLY available to those who are email subscribers. Be sure to get on my list, the sign up form is at the end of my post.

I hope that this post will help you see how you can shop your closet more easily. You have already seen me style these pants, and I’ve styled the cable-knit sweater also. So, this is a great example of me pulling items from my closet and changing it up a tad.

To keep my wardrobe fresh, I add in new items all of the time. I realize that the business that I am in calls for more clothing than most of you will need, but we all want to look modern and stylish. Adding a few pieces to your closet that are the latest styles is how you can accomplish that.

This leopard print linen-blend cardigan is one of those items that can keep you looking modern and stylish. Leopard print is a classic style, its popularity might come and go, but it will always be considered stylish. There are a couple of reasons that you might love this cardigan. One – it is on sale for 40% off. That is always a great reason to start with. Lol! Two – it is a gorgeous print, and anyone can wear it. Three – it is a linen-blend, and very lightweight. This is a way for you gurl’s who live in warmer climates to still be able to look stylish.

If you need the same look, but a warmer, slightly heavier cardigan, then the one I styled here might be a better fit for you. I am wearing a medium in both cardigans, and I love the fit on both of them.

These cropped chino pants are great casual-style pants. The camel color (canyon on the website) is perfect for fall but will be great for spring and summer also. The material is 84% Cotton, 8% Lyocell, and 8% Linen, so you will see some wrinkles.

One great thing about the end of summer is that you can get a lot of great deals right now. These chinos are on sale for 60% off, and they come in several colors. The dark olive color and the navy option will be great for fall, and the white pair will look fabulous next summer. Since they are only $28.00 (once you put them in your cart), they are a smart purchase.

I am wearing my usual size 10, and they fit me great.

How do you like my fancy new wedge shoes? I’ve been looking for a black pair of wedge shoes, and this pair sure looks fabulous. I am still on the fence about them because the medallion draws my attention to my feet. I bought these on sale, but they are still expensive, so I think that I’ll send them back and grab a pair that doesn’t have a large medallion. For someone with a size 9 foot, I don’t like drawing attention to my feet. Here are some similar wedges for you.

I am LOVING this cable-knit sweater tank! I have it in a couple of colors, and I am constantly looking for ways to style it. A cable-knit pattern is a classic design, and I have always loved the way that it looks. I am thrilled to see that cable-knit items are trending this year, you’ll see me wearing them a LOT! I am wearing a medium in the sweater tank, and you need to grab it while it is still on sale.

Here is another way to shop your closet. Once again, I am wearing the same pants and the same cable-knit sweater tank. A completer piece doesn’t always have to be a jacket or cardigan, in this case, it is a wrap sweater. I kept on the sweater tank since the wrap can fall open and be a smidge revealing, but a lightweight camisole works the same.

This cozy and soft wrap sweater is perfect for fall, and it can be dressed up or worn casually. I think this would look great with a pair of jeans and booties. This dark camel color is gorgeous, but the sweater also comes in black which could be worn in multiple ways. I am wearing a medium in the wrap sweater, and did I mention that it is under $15.00!?!

Changing your jewelry can make any outfit look different when you shop your closet. I am partial to my large gold hoops, and I wear them a lot. These earrings are not as heavy as they look, and they make a great statement. The gold statement necklace is new and is c/o Kendra Scott. Even though I just got the necklace, it is on Final Sale already. You can get this necklace at a $50+ discounted price! The last item is my Maggie Bangle bracelet. It is one of the first items that I bought from Kendra Scott, and it is still a favorite purchase.

Unfortunately, these leopard print flats have already sold out. I styled them the other day on the blog, and they had low stock then. I think you gurls bought what inventory there was because they are not online. This style is available in solid colors, and I suggest you check those out. I have them in the neutral saddle color, and I love them. They run true to size, and I am wearing my normal size 9.

If I can find some similar options, I’ll link them below for you.

  1. this is a fantastic post! love seeing various pieces we’ve seen before and in a variety of outfits! Thank you!

  2. Great idea, shopping in my closet. I needed the reminder to make decisions to change the look of some of my outfits.

  3. Yes, indeed-I went right over to JCrew and bought those shoes the other day.
    Love them, thanks! 🙂

  4. I am shopping my closet and messing around with color. I tried my blue stripe shirt with my new sage barrel pants. Score! I i added my leopard rain boots(wet here after hurricane) and it looked just right. I am having a ball with my own closet. You are inspiring. 🌺

  5. You are tempting me again! I have no where to wear shoes, yet I’m looking. Love both the looks. We need a Joe story, it’s been a while!

  6. Tania, those medallion wedgies look great on you! They are feminine and have an elongating shape. Not like chunky old school wedgies. You have Tory Burch flats with big medallions, and they look good too. Just sayin’. To me, the newer look, roomier cropped pants seem to need a heel or wedge to give them style oomph.

  7. Great post.
I am planning on bring my autumn and winter clothes out soon and will definitiley shop my closet then.

  10. Great post! I love to shop my closet. Makes me feel creative. 😜 I’m ordering the leopard cardigan.

Loved the article which should remind us all how much variation we can find in our own closets. And I especially loved the cable shell which was on a 50 per cent off sale! I’m in the South and a regular cable knit sweater is usually too warm but this shell under a jacket or light sweater will be perfect.

    1. Marian, that sweater is a fabulous deal!

  12. Maribeth Conklin says:

I actually think that wedge shoe with the medallion looks great on your foot. The medallion picks up the color of the pants. I think if it was a solid color there would be no visual interest.

    1. Thanks for the insight, Maribeth. I just see dollars when I look at the shoes. Lol!
