Why You Should Wear A Shirtdress For Summer
There are several reasons I think you should wear a shirtdress for summer. Before we dive into that topic, let’s address what “is” a shirtdress.
What Is A Shirtdress
According to Wikipedia, a shirtdress is a style of women’s dress that borrows details from a man’s shirt. These can include a collar, a button front, or cuffed sleeves. Hmmm, that doesn’t sound like something I would want to wear, but in this case, the description doesn’t match how the shirtdress looks on a woman.
Reasons Why You Should Wear A Shirtdress For Summer
I know many of you shy away from wearing dresses of any kind, but hear me out.
- Comfort: Most shirtdresses are made from lightweight materials like cotton or linen. These fabrics help to keep you cool in the hot blazing sun of summer.
- Convenience: Shirtdresses are a one-and-done item. You only have to pick one piece of clothing from your closet, add shoes, and you can walk out the door.
- Style: Shirtdresses are a classic item! They have stood the test of time and always look great. They can be dressed up or down, which makes them versatile.
A Casual Knee-Length Shirtdress
This black knee-length shirtdress is lightweight and perfect for a hot summer day. The shoulders are wide enough, so you don’t need a strapless bra, and even though the fabric is lightweight, you can’t see through it. It negates the cooling factor if you have to wear a slip underneath the dress.
Here is a view of the shirtdress from the back.
A friend of mine was wearing these sandals, and I fell in love with them. I found them on sale a few weeks later and grabbed a pair while I could. I sized up a 1/2 size, so I’m wearing a 9.5 instead of my usual 9. The only downsized to these shoes is the price. Yes, I’ll wear them all summer, but the price is still hard to swallow. I found THIS PAIR that looks almost identical at a fraction of the price. I can’t say how the sizing runs, but the price is way more affordable.
A Casual Midi-Length Shirtdress
Did you see the How To Wear Maxi Dresses For Summer post yesterday? It showed 5 different maxi dresses, each of which looked great for various reasons. The dress I’m wearing today is called a maxi dress on the website; however, I think of it as a midi dress.
I’m 5’6″ tall, and this dress hits me above my ankle. You’ve seen me style many dresses this spring, and this dress is my favorite so far. I LOVE the style, fit, and how chic this simple dress looks. The dress is available in a couple of colors, and I also ordered it in Oyster Pearl. It can be worn in many ways, and I can’t wait to wear it on a date night.
You can see the details of the dress better in this photo. It has utility pockets on the chest, which I love, but I know some of you can’t wear dresses or tops like this. We are all made differently, so you have to figure out what works best for your body shape.
Here is how the dress looks from the back.
This straw tote is the perfect size. It isn’t too large, and it isn’t too small. The black details look perfect with both of the black shirtdresses. You might notice I’m wearing the tan version of the wedge sandals. When I find something I like, I will buy it in several different colors. I’ll get more wear from the tan ones since I like wearing neutral shoes most often.

Cute for work or a casual outing
Font size and color are great. Very nice maxi shirtdress. Love the natural color shoes and accessories.
I definitely would have to opt for the midi length! I inherited my aunt’s knees (they are chubby from every angle)!🤣 Anyway, I have not shown them in public for years. I recently lost over 50 lbs, but those knees still look chubby! I also do not typically wear sleeveless because of the bat wings from when I was larger and less active. I plan to work on both these areas though. Love your blog even though I am 63 now. Wish me luck on thinner knees and toned arms as I continue on my health journey! I recently became a health coach because I want to help other people regain their health and life back!
I appreciate the darker font as well! Thanks!
Cute dresses, yes, shirt dresses are timeless!
I love your Bible verse. It’s one of my favorites. I’m so excited! I ordered two of the shirt dresses on Amazon. I ordered the bright pink and the red print😊
I love the pink one, it is so fun looking.
The shirt dress used to be everywhere a long time ago. I think all the women I worked with had multiple ones. Pockets on the top make me look to top heavy.
Thanks for changing the font color. Definitely easier to read.
Which type of dress is more versatile – the shirt dress or a wrap dress?
It is a matter of preference, but I think the shirt dress is more versatile. It can also be worn as a duster, so I guess that gives it more versatility.
Hi Tania! Thank you so much for the Starbucks card – how kind of you! I absolutely love your blog and really like the first shirtdress in this post. I already have it in my Amazon cart! 🙂
I can see why the midi shirtdress is your favorite. It looks amazing on you. I love the classics that never goes out of style.
I appreciate you changing the color of the font; however it is still too light to read easily. I always enjoy reading your openings, so black, please???? Thank you!
I really like shirtdresses, and have several. Now I’m checking out both of these.
Yes, the font color is easier to see now on my computer and phone. Good idea.

I really like both of the shirt dresses on you. That is a style that I do not have in my closet that I think I will remedy that, if I can find one in a good color for me to wear. Have a fabulous weekend!
A shirtdress is my favorite! Thanks for the styles you found and for the tips!
I LOVE shirt dresses and you look fantastic in them…well, honestly, pretty much everything you put on! You are right, just throw one of these in in the summer and you are set to go!
As requested. Than you for showing so many dresses with short sleeves! Talbots has a gorgeous green linen one! I like one and done. Just watched coronation. Such elegant dressing!

I’ve always loved shirtdresses when I’ve been lucky enough to find one for my petite size. Both of those look lovely on you.
The font color is easier to read. Never noticed that till you mentioned.
