WHEN YOU NEED A FORMAL DRESS
I know this post will not be one that everyone needs to see. But with wedding season fast approaching, I thought some of you might like to see a post featuring a formal dress. I have mentioned before that I was a District President for GFWC Virginia. There are 8 districts, and I was the President of the Southwestern District. One of the duties of the President is to attend State functions like the convention I attended. On Saturday night, there is a processional of Past President, District Presidents, and the current State Officers.
This is the one night where the dress is more formal. Some in attendance even wear long gowns, even if they are not in the processional. I bought this dress last year, and wore it to my son’s wedding. This was my mother-of-the-groom dress. I LOVE the color. Bronze must be a popular color at the moment, I saw several bronze colored dresses on Saturday night. I bought this dress from David’s Bridals, but be aware if you buy from them, there is a 10 day return policy.
I know I am in my 50’s, but that does not mean that I want to wear a frumpy dress. A lot of mother-of-the-bride/groom dresses are just OLD looking. I didn’t want something really low cut, really short, or really tight, but I did want something that was current and elegant.

This dress is a flattering cut. The empire waist helps me in my problem area of the tummy. It is tight only in the area where I am my smallest, and then flows away.
The jewels at the neckline eliminate the need for a necklace. Instead I chose to wear a pair of large stone earrings and a bracelet that my sister-in-law bought me for Christmas.

The bracelet is a retired piece from Stella & Dot called Audrey. I found it on Ebay, but there might be other places that you can find it. It is one of my favorite pieces from Stella & Dot.

The other bracelet I have on is one that I bought at the convention from a vendor called the Neck’d Ladies. How cool is that name? It is white metal dogwood flowers with a large rhinestone in the middle of each flower.
My vintage feather clutch was a big hit at the convention. Everyone at my table loved it, and I had to pass it around and let each one of them see it. I have the matching hat to the clutch, but it is not flattering on me. I will not break up the pair though. Here is where I styled the clutch last time. It is one of my most pinned posts on Pinterest.

Here is a look from the back. I was just thrilled that I didn’t have a back boob. That is always one of my goals when I dress. I may not look at hair from the back, but I usually turn around to see if I have a back boob showing. If so, then a cardigan or blazer will be put on before I head out the door.
You remember that I told you it is always cold at these functions, but my cashmere wrap would not be appropriate for this look. Instead I threw on a peacock colored wrap that had strands of bronze running through it. I didn’t walk with the shawl, but I kept it at the table for just in case. I didn’t get a picture of my shoes, this dress is really long. I have on the highest pair of heels I have, and it still drug the ground.

I did want to ask, though, where does one find a vintage evening clutch? The purses you find are all so cute!!
I bought my clutch at a vintage fashion show. I usually attend about three of these shows a year and I have found all kinds of wonderful items.
You look beautiful! If I ever need a formal dress, I will look for something similar! However, now that I am retired and living on a lake, “black pants and a top” are about as dressy as I get!
That dress is beautiful on you. I am currently searching for a short mother of the bride dress for my daughter’s outdoor July evening wedding. I need something semi formal but all of the MOB dresses I have found are so frumpy and old looking! You are right!! I’m trying not to panic, BUT…..
I had to jump back to see your most pinned picture. That was the picture that sold me to follow your blog! Love the clutch.
Beautiful!
Love the color of your fabulous gown! Great little clutch, and pretty accessories. Looking very formal here, and can use your fantastic accessories with casual looks later too with pizzazz!
