When I Consider Your Heavens

Very few people have ever experienced the wonder of space in person. Most of us have only been able to see the Moon and the stars through a small telescope or look up at the sky at night. I’m always in awe when I watch a star twinkle or locate the Big Dipper. The sky is mostly black, but it is dotted with lots of tiny bright lights.

NASA has a new telescope called the James Webb Space Telescope. This new telescope has even better images than the Hubble. Looking at the latest images of space, you almost start to wonder why it is called space. There doesn’t seem to be much “space”; instead, it is filled with stars, planets, and galaxies we’ve never seen.

Psalms 8:1

Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory in the heavens.

David could only see a few bright stars, planets, and the Moon when he wrote this. He had no idea that the heavens had more than he could see with his eyes. But, he knew who created the heavens.

Psalms 8:3-4

When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the Moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?

Look back up at the photo from the JWST. One of those tiny insignificant dots is Earth. We are a small, insignificant dot on Earth, yet, the Universe’s Creator knows us personally. He knows our innermost thoughts and dreams and walks with us daily. WHY??? Why would God care about something so tiny and imperfect when He has the Universe to look after?

We don’t deserve God’s love; He gives it without us deserving it. He gives it to those who don’t even believe in Him or try to live a Godly life. If I didn’t know that I was also undeserving, it would make me angry that God loves everyone equally, no matter what.

I understand what David was feeling when he looked up at the heavens. The Moon smiled at me a couple of nights ago, and I smiled back and said, “Thank you, Lord, for caring for me.” Yesterday afternoon, I walked outside, looked up at the clouds, and was again reminded of the Lord’s majesty.

I couldn’t quite capture the beauty of the scene before me. There were streaks of sunshine coming from the clouds, and I immediately thought of the High Flight poem that ends by saying, “And put out my hand, and touched the face of God.”

While I can’t comprehend the Lord’s love for me, these verses give me a glimpse of the why.

Ephesians 2:10

10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Galatians 4:6

Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.”

Philippians 1:6

being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.

Luke 12:6-8

Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. “I tell you, whoever publicly acknowledges me before others, the Son of Man will also acknowledge before the angels of God.

The same God who created the galaxies with its majestic stars, moons, and planets also created us. His words made the earth, His fingers formed us in His image, and His breath brought us to life. He loves us because He is our Father, Hallowed be His name!

To God Goes The Glory!

Have A Blessed Day

  1. Love the scriptures and post today. We are so lucky to be blessed with Grace of God! I know I certainly am undeserving.

I do have a question – I am a youthful (so I’m told) 73 year old who dresses fashionably and likes to stay up with current fashion -within reason. I feel like ruffles on sleeveless tops and dresses look silly on someone my age. What do you think?

As I said I like to stay current but also don’t want to look silly in my clothing choices!

    1. Peggy, I’m glad you’re enjoying the blog. Staying youthful starts with the mind, so it’s great that yours is still young. When it comes to any trend, if you are uncomfortable in it, don’t wear it. There are lots of trends, so I’m sure you’ll find one you like.

  2. My husband taught about this in our class this morning! Our God is BIG yet He knows the number of hairs on our heads. What love He has for us!

  3. when I was a young mother, I watched TV late until it signed off with this beautiful poem-High Flight. Haven’t heard it in ages. Thank you for that, it made me cry.

  15. I am so thankful I found your blog several years ago. You write so well each day but Sunday is the best. I have never read that your education was in English, journalism, or writing. But never mind, you have been blessed with the gift. Now to the Universe – I marvel at it too and when I think about it too much, it’s scary! Enjoyed your post.
