When God Uses Ordinary Moments to Remind Us He Is Near

There was nothing remarkable about the evening. I was tired, ready for bed, and honestly thinking more about my pillow than anything else. I stepped outside to take Lucy out like I always do before turning in, and I was mostly focused on getting her to hurry up so I could go back inside. I was standing there waiting for her to finish when I happened to glance up, and that simple look upward changed the whole tone of my night.

The moon was glowing in a way I honestly cannot remember ever seeing before. It was not even full, just about three-quarters, but it lit up the sky like a spotlight. I could see the shadows of the craters and the texture across its surface, and even the stars seemed brighter than usual. The whole sky felt alive.

And as I stood there staring up at it, something from my childhood came back to me. I used to say a little prayer when I was young:

I see the moon
The moon sees me
God bless the moon
God bless me

I had not thought about that in years. But standing there in the quiet, I suddenly felt like the moon could see me. Not in some strange or mystical way, but in that childlike sense of being known and noticed. It was as if God was gently reminding me that I am not small in His sight, even under a sky that vast.

Lucy was still sniffing around, completely unaware that I was having a moment. And there I was, in my yard, remembering a prayer I had not said since I was a little girl.

As I stood there taking it all in, my thoughts drifted to the shepherds. It isn’t December, and I wasn’t trying to turn the moment into something profound. It just felt familiar. They were outside at night too, doing what they always did, when the sky interrupted their routine.

The Shepherds Were Just Living Their Ordinary Lives

In the Gospel of Luke, we are told that shepherds were out in the fields at night, keeping watch over their flocks. They were not in the temple praying for a miracle. They were not gathered in worship. They were simply doing their jobs when the sky suddenly lit up, and the glory of the Lord shone around them.

I have always loved that detail because it reminds me that God does not wait for perfect conditions. He did not wait until they were in a sacred building or in a heightened spiritual moment. He met them in the middle of their work, under an ordinary night sky that suddenly became extraordinary.

Standing there in my own yard, I realized that maybe that is still how He works. God often shows up in the middle of the routine. He interrupts the ordinary. He catches us when we are not expecting anything at all.

The truth is, He may be speaking far more often than we realize. We are just busy. We are thinking about tomorrow’s responsibilities, replaying conversations from earlier in the day, or mentally organizing the next thing that needs to get done. We are physically present, but our minds are somewhere else.

All it took for me was one glance upward.

Creation Still Declares Who He Is

Psalm 19:1 (NIV)
“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands.”

That word declare means something strong and confident. Creation is not timid about who made it. The sky does not whisper about its Creator. It boldly points to Him.

With everything happening in the world right now, it is easy to let anxiety crowd our thoughts. News cycles move fast. Opinions are loud. Problems can feel heavy. Yet the moon still rises exactly when it is supposed to. The stars continue to shine with steady consistency. The sky remains faithful to what it was created to do.

God’s creation is not shaken by what shakes us.

As I stood there looking at that glowing moon, I felt a quiet reminder settle over me. The same God who hung that moon in place is the same God who is holding my life together. Nothing about my circumstances changed in that moment, but my perspective did.

Light Is Not Seasonal

We usually connect shepherds and stars with Christmas. We picture nativity scenes and hear carols in our minds. But light breaking into darkness is not seasonal. It is part of who God is.

He brings light into confusion.
He brings peace into fear.
He brings clarity when our thoughts feel tangled.

That moon was not the star of Bethlehem, and I am not suggesting it was some dramatic sign meant only for me. What it did was quieter than that. It reminded me to slow down. It reminded me that God is not confined to church services or holidays. He is present in driveways, backyards, and on ordinary Tuesday nights.

Sometimes the most powerful reminders come when we are not even looking for them.

What If We Looked Up More Often?

I do not know what you are walking through right now. You might feel like you are in a season that seems dim or uncertain. You might be carrying concerns that sit quietly in the back of your mind, even when you are trying to rest.

But here is what struck me. That moon was not even full, and it was still radiant. It did not have to be complete to shine brightly.

And maybe we do not either.

Maybe we do not have to feel strong or perfectly put together for God to use us. Maybe we do not have to wait until everything is aligned neatly before we can reflect His light. Sometimes it is enough to pause long enough to notice what He is already doing.

Last night reminded me that God’s presence is woven into the everyday. It is written across the sky and tucked into moments we almost rush past.

Sometimes the holiest thing we can do is simply look up.

Let’s End With a Prayer

Father,
Thank You for meeting us in the middle of ordinary days. Thank You for the reminders You place in creation that You are still near and still in control. When life feels noisy or uncertain, help us slow down and lift our eyes. Teach us to notice You in the everyday moments and to trust that Your light is shining, even when we feel surrounded by darkness.
Amen.
