What to Wear When Fall Weather Turns Cooler: 8 Easy Outfit Ideas

Yesterday, I walked outside to take my doggy out to potty. It was so cold that I immediately turned around and went back inside to get my heavy, long robe. The mornings are colder, the evenings get chilly faster, and suddenly the little cardigan you were tossing over everything a few weeks ago needs some backup.

That is the stage of fall I was thinking about when I tried on these outfits. Everything happens to be from Talbots, but instead of looking at this as another store try-on, I want to show you how I would use these pieces once the weather actually starts cooling down.

This is also when I start paying more attention to texture. In warmer weather, color and print can do most of the work. Once fall settles in, corduroy, cable knits, cashmere, denim, and heavier sweaters give an outfit that extra depth that makes it feel right for the season.

For sizing reference, I’m 5’6”, and I’ve included the sizes I tried on with each outfit. As always, I’m going to tell you what I notice about the fit and styling rather than declaring everything wonderful simply because I tried it on. Some pieces will work better for certain closets and lifestyles than others.

Why These Outfits Feel Current for Fall 2026

A lot of what we’re seeing this fall is actually very wearable. Brown continues to be important, but it has moved beyond one shade of chocolate. We’re seeing chestnut, camel, cinnamon, espresso, and softer earthy neutrals too.

Texture is another big part of the season. Corduroy has returned in a noticeable way, and richer knits are giving simple outfits more interest without requiring a lot of extra styling.

Animal print is also very much in the mix, although I don’t really think of leopard and cheetah as passing trends anymore. They come and go in popularity, but they never disappear completely. This fall, they’re showing up in sweaters, accessories, coats, and other pieces that can be worn almost like a neutral.

That is what I like about most of these outfits. They acknowledge what is current without looking like you bought an entire wardrobe around one season.

Leopard and Chocolate Corduroy

I started with the Pointelle Charming Cardigan in Modern Leopard in a medium and the Stretch Corduroy Pull-On Trousers in a size 8.

This outfit is basically fall texture from head to toe, but it doesn’t feel heavy. The leopard cardigan gives you pattern and movement, while the dark brown corduroy pants add texture without competing with the print.

I especially like the combination of leopard and brown because the colors already belong together. There isn’t that feeling of trying to “match” an animal print. The dark brown simply grounds it.

The cardigan is also a good example of how to wear animal print if you don’t want something loud. The scale of the print is smaller and the colors stay fairly tonal, so you notice the pattern without it taking over the entire outfit.

The Corduroy Pull-On Trousers are worth talking about too. Corduroy is showing up again this fall, and I can see why. It gives you the ease of a casual pant but looks richer than a basic cotton trouser.

If your closet has plenty of black pants already, dark brown corduroy is an easy way to change things up without buying a color that is difficult to style.

Paisley Cashmere With the Same Corduroy Pants

For the second outfit, I kept on the same dark brown corduroy trousers in a size 8 and changed into the Audrey Cashmere Sweater in Imperial Paisley, also in a medium.

This is a good example of why I like a printed sweater in fall. The paisley has several warm tones running through it, so the brown pants look intentional rather than simply being the neutral thing I happened to grab.

Paisley also works nicely this time of year because it has some visual richness to it. Florals can sometimes read spring or summer depending on the colors, but paisley in rust, brown, cream, and earthy tones immediately feels more autumnal.

The other thing I notice here is that the print does almost all the styling for you. You could add a simple pair of loafers or ankle boots and be finished.

That matters to me because I don’t want every outfit to require a belt, scarf, jacket, third layer, and five accessories just to look complete. Sometimes the top is all you need.

Dark Brown Cable Knit With Trouser Jeans

Next I paired the Cable Knit Full-Zip Cardigan in a medium, in dark brown, with the Classic Jean Trousers in Richmond Wash in a size 8.

This may be one of the easiest looks in the entire group.

The dark brown sweater gives you that rich fall color, but the cable knit is really what keeps it from looking flat. When you’re wearing two simple pieces, texture becomes much more important.

I also like the full zip because it gives you options. Wear it zipped as a sweater like I did here, unzip it over a tee or button-up, or leave the neckline open a bit and add a necklace.

The trouser jeans are a nice counterpoint to the sweater because they have a wider, cleaner leg than a traditional straight jean. That gives the outfit a little more polish without turning it into something dressy.

This is also where I think current trends can be useful instead of bossy. Wider denim is still very present, but you don’t have to jump into an exaggerated leg shape. A trouser jean gives you an updated silhouette in a much more approachable way.

A Blue and White Stripe That Keeps Fall From Getting Too Brown

For this outfit, I wore the Poplin Ruffle Top in Mixed Stripe in a medium with the same Classic Jean Trousers in a size 8.

After all that brown, this felt like somebody opened a window. Lol.

Blue and white stripes aren’t what we automatically think of as “fall,” and that is exactly why I like them here. You don’t need to pack away half your closet simply because September showed up.

The deeper denim makes the shirt feel seasonally appropriate, and the mixed stripe gives it more personality than a basic button-down.

This is also a good reminder that fall color doesn’t have to mean rust, burgundy, mustard, and brown every single day. Rich blue continues to work beautifully in fall, especially mixed with denim and warmer neutrals. Your wardrobe will be much more useful if your fall pieces can talk to the rest of your closet instead of living in their own little seasonal section.

Layering the Stripe With Fair Isle

Then I took the same Mixed Stripe Poplin Ruffle Top in a medium and layered the Cable Knit Cardigan in Fair Isle over it. I kept on the Classic Jean Trousers in a size 8.

Now this feels like true sweater weather.

The reason this combination works is that the shirt collar and cuffs break up the darker cardigan. You still get the warmth and texture of the knit, but the stripe adds some brightness around the face.

I know mixing patterns makes some women nervous, but this is a fairly easy way to do it. One print is structured and linear, while the other is concentrated mainly around the upper part of the cardigan. They aren’t fighting for the exact same space.

You could also simplify this by wearing the cardigan over a white, blue, or cream shirt if mixed prints aren’t your thing.

The Fair Isle detail gives this one a very traditional fall-and-winter feel, which is why I would be careful about buying several pieces like it. One interesting Fair Isle cardigan can be useful. Six of them start forming their own little village in your closet. Lol.

A Playful Fox Sweater With Bootcut Jeans

The Fox Crewneck Sweater in a medium is definitely the most playful piece in this group. I wore it with the Barely Boot Jeans in Esme Wash in a size 8.

I know novelty sweaters can be tricky. There is a fine line between charming and something that looks like you raided the elementary school lost-and-found box.

This sweater works for me because the background color is neutral and the foxes are done in warm fall shades. It still looks like an adult sweater, it just happens to have a sense of humor.

I also like it with a simpler jean. When your sweater already has a lot going on, you don’t need the bottom half competing for attention.

The barely boot silhouette is another nice option if you’re tired of very wide jeans but don’t want to go back to a skinny fit. There is just enough shape at the hem to balance the leg while still looking streamlined.

Brown Cable Knit and Classic Denim

For this outfit I wore the Mixed Cable Knit Crewneck Sweater with the same Barely Boot Jeans in Esme Wash in a size 8.

This is probably the most traditional fall outfit of the bunch: brown sweater, blue jeans, simple shoes.

And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

What keeps a basic brown sweater from looking dull is the cable texture. That is one reason I think texture deserves more attention once the weather cools down. A smooth brown knit and jeans can look perfectly fine, but add cables, ribbing, boucle, suede, or corduroy and suddenly the outfit has more depth.

Brown also looks especially good with medium and dark denim because blue gives it contrast. You don’t have to find the perfect cream pant or coordinate four shades of camel to wear the brown trend.

Sometimes jeans are the answer. Shocking, I know. Lol.

Cheetah Cashmere With Black Jeans

The last outfit pairs the Audrey Cashmere Sweater in Petite Cheetah in a medium with the Barely Boot Jeans in Black in a size 8.

This one has a completely different feel from the first animal-print outfit.

The first look was softer because of all the brown. Here, the black jeans sharpen everything up and make the animal print look a little more modern.

The black jeans make this animal-print sweater feel a little sharper and more polished than the softer brown leopard look earlier in the post. I like the contrast because the print still gives you plenty of interest, while the black on the bottom keeps everything grounded.

This is also an easy way to wear animal print if you don’t want it to feel too bold. Keeping the rest of the outfit simple lets the sweater be the focal point without making the whole look feel busy.

Animal print is getting plenty of attention again this fall, but this is the way I prefer to wear trends. The sweater itself is classic enough that it won’t suddenly look ridiculous when the fashion magazines move on to something else.

Accessories I Wore With These Fall Outfits

I know I’m going to get questions about the jewelry, so I’m putting everything in one place. I wore the same mix of silver and gold bracelets with most of these looks, including the Cleopatra Oval Hinged Bangle, Panther Cuff, Caviar Bubbly Cuff Bracelet, and Embrace Caviar Versa Bypass Bracelet. I like stacking bracelets because they add a little polish without competing with the clothing, especially when I’m already wearing leopard, paisley, stripes, or Fair Isle.

I also wore the Ava Necklace, a newer piece from Miranda Frye, with several of these outfits. Since so many of the clothes already had plenty of texture or print, I kept the jewelry fairly simple. I love the length of the necklace, and how it catches the light as you move.

The Vionic Ankle Strap Heeled Sandals were the real workhorses of this try-on. I wore the same pair with every outfit, and more importantly, I wore them all day. The block heel gives me a little height without feeling wobbly, and I found them comfortable enough that I never felt the need to change shoes. If my feet start complaining, I am not suffering for fashion. Lol.

I also like seeing how one neutral shoe works with completely different pant shapes. I wore these with the corduroy trousers, trouser jeans, barely boot jeans, and black jeans, and they didn’t fight with any of them. That is much more useful to me than buying a shoe that only works with one specific outfit.

The Fall Trends I’d Pay Attention to From These Outfits

If you’re looking at these outfits and wondering what is worth adding to your own closet, I wouldn’t start by making a shopping list of eight things.

I’d start by looking for the gaps.

• Maybe your jeans are fine, but most of your sweaters are smooth solid knits. A cable-knit sweater could add texture.
• Maybe you own plenty of denim but no corduroy. A dark brown pair would give you another casual pant that works with many of the same tops.
• Maybe your closet is full of solids. One paisley or animal-print sweater might do more for you than three more basic crewnecks.

And if you already own all of those things, congratulations. You may officially close your browser and save your money. I promise I won’t be offended.

That is part of my rule with clothing: a trend is only useful if it gives you something your wardrobe is currently missing.

You don’t need brown because Vogue says brown is in. You need brown if you like it, it flatters you, and you can immediately think of several things you already own that will work with it.

You don’t need corduroy because it is having a moment. You need it if you want more texture or another cool-weather option besides denim.

And you certainly don’t need animal print if you’ve never liked animal print. Fashion is supposed to help you get dressed, not give you homework.

What I’d Look for First

If I were building a cooler-weather wardrobe from scratch, I’d concentrate on three things: one textured neutral, one interesting print, and one dependable pair of jeans.

That gives you enough variety to make your fall outfits look intentional without filling your closet with pieces that only work one way.

The other thing I’d watch is color. Chocolate brown is everywhere right now, but notice how easily it works with blue denim, black, cream, camel, rust, and animal print. That is why some trends have more staying power than others. They cooperate with the closet you already own.

And that is always what I’m looking for.

Trends can be fun. New clothes can be fun. But the real test is still the same: Will I know what to do with this once I get it home?
