Apparently, crossbody bags have entered the same danger zone as skinny jeans and ankle socks. Lol! I’ve recently started seeing younger women refer to crossbody bags as an “old woman” bag, and naturally, that got my attention.

I happen to own quite a few crossbody bags, and I’m certainly not planning to gather them all up and send them to handbag retirement. But I have noticed that I don’t wear mine across my body nearly as often as I used to.

So, are crossbody bags actually out of style, or is this just another fashion conversation getting louder online? And more importantly, what does any of this mean for women over 50 who like the practicality of a crossbody but still want to look current?

That’s what I want to talk about today.

Are Crossbody Bags Out of Style in 2026?

The answer isn’t quite as dramatic as social media would have us believe.

Crossbody bags haven’t disappeared, and plenty of retailers are still selling them. However, other handbag shapes have been getting a lot more attention lately. Shoulder bags, top-handle bags, oversized totes, slouchier shapes, and even clutches worn during the daytime are showing up heavily in current handbag trends.

Vogue’s Fall 2026 handbag trend report, for example, highlights carryalls, clutches, large shoulder bags, and top-handle styles. That doesn’t mean someone has issued an official fashion decree banning crossbodies. Thank goodness, because I don’t have time to appear before the Handbag Police. Lol!

What it does tell me is that the way we’re carrying handbags is changing. And frankly, I’m fine with that.

I talked about some of the bigger shifts I was already seeing in my 2026 Spring and Summer Handbag Trends post. Trends move quickly, but I still think the smartest approach is to notice what’s changing, then decide which updates actually make sense for your wardrobe and your life.

Do Crossbody Bags Make You Look Older?

I don’t think owning or carrying a crossbody bag automatically ages anyone. What can make some bags feel less current is the combination of the shape, size, details, and how they’re styled.

That’s why I would never tell you to get rid of a handbag you love simply because a younger generation has decided it isn’t cool this week. Instead, look at what you already own and ask yourself, Could I wear this differently?

I Own Crossbody Bags, But I Don’t Always Wear Them Crossbody

This is where my own closet enters the conversation.

I went back through some of my photos and realized something funny. I own several handbags that are technically crossbody bags, but I’m rarely wearing them across my body.

That’s actually one of the reasons I like bags with removable or adjustable straps. They give you choices.

Italian Handwoven Leather Mini Shoulder Bag

This Italian Handwoven Leather Mini Shoulder Bag from Quince is a perfect example. I carry this one as a shoulder bag, and I love the shorter strap with the woven leather.

The texture makes the bag interesting without needing lots of hardware or logos, and the cognac leather works with so many colors in my wardrobe. I can carry it with denim, white, navy, olive, cream, chocolate brown, and just about any other neutral.

More importantly, I actually wear it this way. I’m not showing you some styling trick I came up with five minutes ago for a blog post.

Quince Italian Leather Triple Compartment Crossbody

This Italian Leather Triple Compartment Crossbody black bag really is a crossbody, but look at how I’m wearing it. I’ve shortened the strap and have it sitting on my shoulder instead.

That one little adjustment changes the look.

I also like the compartments in this bag because I can organize my phone, wallet, lipstick, and other essentials without needing a bunch of little pouches inside. I’ve reached the stage where I don’t want to perform an archaeological dig every time my phone rings.

Quince Handwoven Convertible Crossbody

This Handwoven Convertible Crossbody bag might be my favorite example because it really shows how much flexibility a convertible handbag gives you.

Instead of wearing the long strap across my body, I’m carrying it almost like an oversized clutch. You could also use the shorter strap and carry it as a shoulder bag.

Same handbag. Completely different look.

That’s why I don’t think the answer to “Are crossbody bags out of style?” needs to be “Go buy all new handbags.” Sometimes the answer is simply: change the strap.

For fall, I would probably choose this Cognac color, or even the black version.

What Makes Some Crossbody Styles Feel Less Current?

Before anyone starts throwing handbags at me, these aren’t rules. They’re simply things I notice when I’m comparing older crossbody styles with some of the handbag silhouettes we’re seeing now.

An extra-long strap that places a small bag very low on the hip can sometimes make the style feel older. The same can be true of very boxy shapes, lots of zippers and compartments on the outside, or bags with heavy decorative hardware.

That doesn’t mean any of those things are forbidden. If they’re functional for you and you love them, carry them.

But if you’ve looked in the mirror lately and thought your handbag wasn’t quite working with your outfit, try shortening the strap before you blame the entire bag.

You may also be able to remove the long strap altogether and carry it by a short handle or shoulder strap.

Crossbody Styles That Still Feel Current

If you’re shopping for a new bag and want something that feels fresh now but won’t look ridiculous two years from now, I’d concentrate more on the design than the label “crossbody.”

I’m drawn to beautiful leather, suede, woven textures, softer shapes, interesting handles, and bags with convertible straps.

Here are a few that caught my eye.

Ann Taylor Suede Crossbody Bag

This suede crossbody bag from Ann Taylor is a great option as we head into fall. Suede adds texture to an outfit and makes even a simple jeans-and-sweater combination look a little more expensive.

It’s not a huge bag, and to keep it looking current, I’d carry it by the top handle or as a satchel. Wear it with jeans, trousers, or a casual dress when you want something polished without carrying a big handbag.

Talbots Sierra Suede Polished Saddle Bag

A saddle bag is a classic style that never really goes away, and the Talbots Sierra Suede Polished Saddle Bag has that timeless look I love. The suede makes it especially pretty for fall and gives an outfit a softer, more luxurious feel.

The suede makes this particularly pretty for fall, and I’d wear it with straight-leg jeans, trousers, a sweater, or a button-down shirt.

Talbots Woven Crossbody Bag

If you’ve followed me very long, you’ve probably noticed I have a weakness for woven leather. Texture is one of the easiest ways to make a basic outfit more interesting, which is why this woven crossbody bag from Talbots stood out to me. You can throw on a simple top and jeans and let the bag do some of the work.

I also like that the woven texture gives a simple jeans-and-top outfit a little more personality without needing a lot of extra accessories.

Michael Kors Large Crossbody Bag

Some of you are reading this and thinking, “That’s nice, Tania, but I actually NEED the stuff in my purse.” Lol! This Michael Kors Large Crossbody gives you more room while still letting you wear the bag across your body.

A larger bag makes sense on days when you need reading glasses, sunglasses, a wallet, makeup, keys, medication, and whatever else life requires.

I would simply be careful about filling every square inch because what starts as a stylish handbag can quickly turn into strength training.

LOFT Leopard Print Shoulder Bag

LOFT Leopard Print Shoulder Bag

This smaller leopard shoulder bag feels much more current to me than the LOFT pebbled leather crossbody we had before. The shorter strap gives it that under-the-arm shape we’re seeing more of right now, and the leopard print adds interest without needing a lot of extra hardware.

I’d treat leopard almost like a neutral here. It would look great with black, chocolate brown, denim, camel, cream, or even a simple white shirt and jeans. This is also a nice example of what I mean when I say you don’t have to give up smaller bags; you can simply change the silhouette.

LOFT Mini Canvas Bag

For casual days, the LOFT Mini Canvas Bag is a fun change from leather. Canvas naturally feels more relaxed and is perfect with denim, casual dresses, sneakers, and other everyday basics.

Being current isn’t about proving that we know what twenty-year-olds are wearing. It’s knowing what’s changing, understanding why, and deciding what actually works for us.

Now, if someone announces that lipstick is aging, I’m simply going to have to draw the line.

When I Still Wear a Bag Crossbody

Here’s the other side of the argument: sometimes a crossbody is simply the most practical option.

If I’m traveling, shopping for several hours, walking through an airport, going to an outdoor event, or anywhere else I want my hands free, I may absolutely wear one across my body.

Fashion gets a vote. Real life gets one, too.

I recently shared Travel-Friendly Crossbody Bags That Keep Essentials Close, and those recommendations still stand. When I’m traveling, security, comfort, organization, and having my hands free may matter more to me than following the latest handbag silhouette.

I also have a separate post on Crossbody Bags for Summer if hands-free convenience is exactly what you’re looking for.

Those posts are about finding good crossbody bags for specific purposes. This conversation is different. We’re talking about how to keep wearing them when fashion starts shifting toward other styles.

Should Women Over 50 Stop Wearing Crossbody Bags?

Absolutely not.

I’m not getting rid of a perfectly good handbag because someone twenty-five or thirty years younger than me has decided the strap placement is questionable. Lol!

What I will do is pay attention.

That’s always been my approach to fashion over 50. I want to know what’s changing because little updates keep my wardrobe feeling fresh, but I don’t blindly follow trends that don’t work for my lifestyle.

If you love your crossbody because it’s comfortable, secure, and lets you keep both hands free, wear it.

If you’d like it to look a little different, shorten the strap. Wear it on your shoulder. Remove the long strap and use the shorter handle. Carry it as a clutch if the design allows.

You still have options. And that might be the real takeaway from this whole “old woman bag” conversation.

  1. Found it! I love purses and changing them up depending on my daily purpose! Thank you for a few more options to consider.

  2. 😃 That Quince crossbody keeps calling my name! The “young females” in my family carry those little card wallets on the back of their phones. Where is all their stuff 🤷🏼‍♀️

🙂 As older women I say wear what you want. I’m tired of being told what we should be wearing.
