WHAT IF YOU’RE WRONG

Joe and I hardly ever watch the television. Unless there is a big ballgame on or unless Emersyn is over visiting (we must watch her shows) then we never even go into the living room. The other day Joe was bored with the computer so he went into the living room and sat down to watch TV. That lasted for about 15 minutes because he couldn’t find anything he wanted to watch but he left the TV on. Some time later I walked through the room to take the dogs out to potty and there was this show on called, Real Time With Bill Maher.

According to Wikipedia, Maher is highly critical of all religion and views it as highly destructive. He has been described, or self-identified, variously as an agnostic, atheist, and apatheist, while objecting to having his views defined by a single label. In his 2008 feature film Religulous, he refers to himself as agnostic.

As I walked through the room he was having a religious discussion with someone, I didn’t watch long enough to see who, and Mr. Maher was basically telling the man that he believed in “fairy tales.” The man defended his religious position and then I took the dogs out.

I have had that on my mind off and on throughout the week. I’ll never forget a sermon that my preacher, Mike Rife, gave one Sunday many, many years ago. He talked about people who didn’t believe in God. He said that you can talk and try to persuade people to turn to the Lord but you can’t MAKE them believe. He ended up saying that he told his friend this, “If I am wrong then the worst thing that can happen to me is that I lived a good life trying to do what is right by the Lord, by myself, and by other people. But, what if you’re wrong? Then you have condemned yourself to an eternity in Hell.” I’m sure I paraphrased that some because it has been a really long time ago. I might have forgotten the exact words but I’ll never forget the meaning.

I feel sorry for Mr. Maher and those like him. I feel sorry that they don’t have a relationship with our Father. I am praying for him because what if he is wrong?

Have a Blessed Day!

  1. I agree with you, Tanya. I thank God every night for the gift of faith. I don’t know how people cope without it.

I get so upset with people who scoff and think it’s funny to hurl insults at our Father. But then I remember that Jesus told his disciples that, what might seem impossible to us — is possible with God. He’s got this — a day is coming when every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord 🙂

  3. So true. We have nothing to lose if we’re wrong; non believers have everything to lose.

  4. My heart is weary for the state of our country. Godless and hateful.

  5. I’ve heard similar sermons before. There’s so much truth in there. One Sunday recently I had to miss service due to a different church commitment (I know that sounds weird, but it’s the truth and a totally different story). I went searching for some pastors to listen to. Being Methodist, I went that direction first. But you know how those searches go, you listen to one, that leads you to another, and then you are down a rabbit hole! I found Jeff Durbin. He’s a street pastor, I guess. I found a video of him speaking to an atheist. Oh my! He held that guy’s feet to the fire! Not an approach that I feel God has put on my heart, but it is obviously on his. I’m with your pastor. We cannot bring anyone to Christ by beating them over the head with a Bible. But if we are on fire with the Holy Spirit, we CAN serve God’s people. In that service, hearts are often softened. XOXO

Tania, thanks for being bold enough to say what you did.
    Blessings to you!

  7. As many others have said, I do not know how they live a day without our God!

  8. Ronna Snipes says:

Love your blog and how you boldly share your faith. Blessing to you Tania!

  9. Wow..I was just thinking about this. Just this past week I talked with some guys who do NOT believe in creation and other biblical ideas. We did not get into a religious discussion because they did not want to. So I was sitting in church this morning thinking of them and thinking about those who do not believe. I remembered the same thought – “what if you’re wrong”? Since I believe they are wrong – I feel sorry that they do not have a relationship with God and possibly life hereafter. I am not judging or condemning them…it is just what I believe and I care for them so am concerned and I pray. God is the final judge. Good post, Tania!!!

  10. Lovely story, but just to change the subject, one quote I shall now use Is TAKE THE DOGS TO POTTY (Ha ha so funny)

  11. You are so right Tania and all we can do is be led by the Spirit of God and leave the results up to Him.
We are only beggars who have found bread and want to share it with others.
You are doing a great job!

  12. I am praying for him because he IS wrong. Jesus is my everything!

  13. Are you saying that the Dalai Lama, a most holy man, will be condemned to hell? I have seen him in person and heard him say that we should never try to change another person’s belief system. If they are good and treat others as they would like to be treated, then what they believe works for them. Even the Catholic Pope has said that what is important is how one lives one’s life and treats other people.

Just because I believe in God does not mean that I have the right to judge others for their beliefs.

    1. Barbara, I am not condemning anyone, that is not “my” job. I don’t even condemn people who wear pajamas to Walmart. I was only wondering about the outcome of personal beliefs. While most of the time my blog posts are geared more toward which shade of pink I should wear ? on Sundays I like to challenge myself and my thinking. Thanks for commenting!

  14. Leslie Handal says:

Amen! That’s why I don’t watch tv shows unless they’re clean and funny! Not to many out there. Beautiful message????

  15. I wonder when people are so strong in their belief that there is no GOD if something happen to them as a child that made them think GOD wasn’t there? A parents death? Abuse? I could not make it one day without my faith and I agree with Tania we should pray for him and anyone that feels this way. Have a blessed Sunday

  16. Religion, always the quicksand of conversations. Well, we are practicing Catholics and my sister in law was a religious sister with a nursing degree dedicated to missionary work in Alaska. Giving that background because in spite of the above, I have faith and believe however not a fan of organized religion. More wars and persecutions have taken place in the name of religion and history proves this. Many live lives patting themselves in the back for attending, church, services, etc. and live amoral and/or unethical lives and many just go about doing good and spreading kindness without labels. My personal view is to live in a way that at the end of your days the good deeds column is longer than the bad one and like you said what is the harm of doing the best you can? Peace!

  17. Amen! Have you heard the song, “What If?” by Nichole Nordeman?

  18. Gina Cates says:

AMEN! It is so hard to understand how people can live without God! SAD!!

  19. a vanderven says:

Ah Bill Maher the man who thinks he knows everything and uses TV to make sure that you better be brow beaten into submission!!! My grandfather who was veteran of WWII used to say there were no atheists in the trenches when the firing started…

  20. WOW! What a great testimony. Its obvious that you have a special relationship with and calling from Our Father. Bless You.

  21. Catherine says:

Amen! I wonder how people can fail to see the power of God around them in everyday small miracles. Thank you for this story today- it reminded me to see the goodness.

    1. Maggie Walshire says:

I could not make it, live breath with out God

  22. Amen sister. Love the qoute

  23. Amen!!!! I honestly do not see how people live without God in their lives. When times are tough and when you are broken into a million pieces…..where else can you look but “up”? When God brings you through the fire without being burned….you automatically praise his Holy name? Like the song says “I Would Rather Have Jesus”. Thank you for sharing that Tania. ~Lisa~

  24. I love this quote:

If I’m wrong about God then I wasted my life. If you’re wrong about God then you wasted your eternity. –LeCrae

    1. Thank you Aly….I will use this quote ? ~Lisa~
