Wearing Yellow Without Looking Washed Out
Any Coldplay fans out there? That’s right, I’m continuing with the summer color series today and we’re talking YELLOW. Yellow can be a tricky one, but when you find the right shade, it lights up your whole complexion and makes your outfit look like a total mood. Wearing yellow without looking washed out is the challenge. The key is in the undertones, intensity, and how you style it. Think pops of yellow near the face, complementary accessories, and smart layering to keep your glow going strong.
Here are some fab pieces (and tips!) to help you wear yellow beautifully, without feeling like the color wears you instead of the other way around. ha!
How To Wear Yellow Without Looking Washed Out
Yellow Lantern Sleeve Blouse
The gorgeous yellow floral print on this shirt made me stop in my tracks… or should I say scroll, LOL! This top just screams spring. I should note that it’s a faux button-down, and you pull it over your head to put it on, but that just makes it even faster to get dressed.
Talbots Floral Diamond Eyelet Flounce Skirt
This Eyelet Flounce Skirt is the definition of happy style. It’s a soft, pastel yellow with a feminine eyelet detail, perfect for cool undertones who want to dip a toe into the yellow trend without going full neon. Pair with a white shirt, gold accessories, and maybe a light denim jacket if the breeze rolls in.
Talbots Smocked Shoulder Crewneck Tee
This little Crewneck Tee is so sweet and easy to wear. The buttery shade of yellow is ideal for most skin tones, especially if you’ve got golden undertones or light hair color. I’d wear this with beige or light blue bottoms and a swipe of peachy blush to bring warmth to the face.
Talbots Ilyssa Elastic Straw Espadrille Flats – Corn Silk
Don’t want yellow near your face? Add it to your feet! These adorable Straw Espadrille Flats bring just the right pop of color without competing with your skin tone. Perfect for grounding neutral outfits or mixing in with earthy tones.
J.Jill Everyday Linen Button-Front Shirt
This yellow is stunning on those with warm undertones or light brown hair color. If you have cool or pink undertones, you can still wear this shade, but try pairing it with cool accessories (like silver jewelry, white pants, or denim) to balance the warmth. I’m loving this Linen Button-Front Shirt. It has that relaxed, easy feel that’s perfect for layering and warm weather. Style it open over a tank or buttoned and half-tucked into trousers for a lived-in but lovely outfit.
LOFT Lemon Raffia Drop Earrings
When in doubt, go with accessories! These Raffia Drop Earrings are the perfect sunny pops of yellow to brighten up your wardrobe. They’re great for ladies with cool tones who want a touch of yellow without risking that washed-out effect near the face.
Quince 100% European Linen Camp Shirt – Soft Yellow
I can’t say enough about Quince. They have nice quality clothing and are much more affordable than most retailers. The soft yellow of this Linen Camp Shirt is light and fresh without overwhelming. Pair it with white linen pants, delicate gold accessories, and a bold lipstick for balance. Perfect for weekend brunch or coastal vacation vibes.
Talbots Linen Shirtdress
This is your sunny day dress! This Linen Shirtdress is a beautiful example of yellow that brings warmth to deeper skin tones or tan complexions. Add a woven belt to define your waist and a pair of neutral sandals. You’ll get all the compliments without looking washed out.
Amazon Bright Yellow Maxi Dress
This Bright Yellow Maxi Dress is not for the faint of heart, but if you’re a high-contrast gal (think dark hair and light skin or bright eye color), it’s stunning. This is one of those dresses that you can wear like sweats. It’s comfy and easy to move in! Add makeup that enhances your lips and cheeks, like a berry lipstick or coral blush, to keep your face from fading into the dress. Confidence is your best accessory here!
J.Crew Factory Eyelet Sleeve Button-Front Top
How pretty is this?! The Eyelet Sleeve Button-Front Top adds such charm to this cheerful top. It’s a soft but vibrant hue, perfect for spring and summer. Wear with white or navy bottoms to balance out the brightness. Great for medium contrast gals who love a vintage-y pop of color.
So there you go, the secret to Wearing Yellow Without Looking Washed Out is all in choosing the right shade for your skin tone and styling it with the right accessories and makeup. Whether you’re going soft and buttery or bold and sunshine-y, yellow can be a total showstopper, and yes, even better than black on the right day.

🙂 I like yellow. I really don’t have any in my closet. Might have to add a few pieces. Have a restful weekend.
😊 Yellow looks good on you. I recently decided to try a butter yellow sweater because it looked like it was short enough for me not to tuck in. (I’m always in the look out for tops like that). I didn’t think it would look good on me but surprisingly it looked good. I bought it. I would say try colors you don’t think look good on you. You might be surprised.
🙂 I like yellow in the summertime. It’s so cheery.
🙂 Yellow just looks so fresh.
😊 I always have a hard time finding the “just right”shade of yellow.
Really bright or orangey yellows don’t work on me, but I am loving the cool, pale butter yellow trend. I’ve bought a few things in the shade, including a pair of Mary Jane flats, and I need that J. Jill linen shirt.
Looks great on you ☺️
🙂 Nice selection.
🙂 I like yellow with denim
😊 I think yellow is such a happy color, but there’s nothing yellow in my closet. Thanks for showing us different ways to incorporate some sunshine into our wardrobes.

🙂 Yellow is not my friend but it looks beautiful on you.
🙂 Yellow is a hard color for me to love, except for the soft buttery yellow that’s having a moment. I also totally agree that the first top is swoon-worthy. Added that to my cart!
😊
I like the smocked shoulder crew neck.
🙂 found it.
Not sure Yellow is my color – but as part of a print it would work.
found it!
I just bought a yellow tee shirt at kohls! it’s called butter yellow, nice and soft.

🙂
😊 I don’t wear much yellow, but I do like the lantern sleeve blouse and smocked shoulder tee.
😊 love the floral top. Been eyeing it, but now in cart, lol. Yellow fun in summer. Found cute yellow eyelet shorts at Target. Have a good weekend!

😀yellow makes everyone so happy
😊 I never gravitated to the color yellow but this year I actually added two shirts ( from Loft) to my summer wardrobe. Received many compliments!
Love the lantern sleeve shirt.
🙂 I wore yellow once to my senior prom. I do like the Talbots linen dress. Would not belt it though with the button placket and the ruffle there is plenty going on. Sandals and a cuff bracelet might style it nicely.
🙂 Love yellow flowers but not crazy for yellow clothing. I have pinkish skin and natural white hair. Tough combo. Love the yellow lantern sleeve blouse though.
🙂Yellow can be a tricky color for me to wear. I usually choose a bright yellow combined with other flattering colors.

The long sleeve floral blouse is bright and happy!
Lol! Thanks!
😀 I bought the lantern sleeve blouse way back when and I get so many compliments every time I wear it. It is my way to wear yellow. The butter yellow items I love!

🙂the yellow lantern blouse is my favorite
😊 I love yellow! I can wear pale yellow.
🙂 my stepdaughter once told me I’m the only person she has seen who can pull off wearing yellow. Haha
It isn’t an easy color to wear.
I’m a paintbox spring in the House Of Colour system, so a happy, warm sunny yellow is right up my alley. The Talbots corn yellow is a great, nice warm yellow for me, but jJill, jcrew and Chico’s yellows are all either too cool or too pale for me. Anyway, I’m happy to see something besides dark blues in all the stores this year. I’ve got my eye on the butter yellow Quince cashmere sweater too. I need to figure out what size I’d wear and get it ordered.
Butter yellow is huge this year, so you should be seeing a lot of it in the stores.
Some cute ideas. Might have to think about something yellow. Found it!
😊 Love the color, but not on me! I like the eyelet skirt.
😊. Yellow is my favorite color but I can’t wear it anymore. Just doesn’t work with my grey hair! Nice choices though.
: ) Love yellow.
😊Thanks for the recommendations.

Yellow is so bright and cheery
Yellow is such a beautiful, cheerful color. Looks amazing on some women. It’s not my best color, but I do have a pretty daffodil yellow dress, which, like your first shirt, has a lot of other colors in it (various browns), which makes it work for me. 🙂
😉 I have just a couple of yellow pieces in my closet.
I enjoyed the video👏🏻
😁 found it. Not familiar with the store Talbots, but I love the long sleeve floral blouse on you. I’m going to have to check out that store sometime soon.
😀 nice I liked the earrings. Really cute.
😊
Found it 🙂 The lantern sleeved blouse is beautiful!
Found it😊
I haven’t shopped at Talbots but think I’ll need to!
😊Although yellow is not the most flattering color on me, the selections shown are so pretty. Love the eyelet skirt!
😀 love Coldplay & yellow & North Beach plantation! Glad y’all had a good trip & safe ride home! I also love the Talbots beach post. Seems like in my rural area everyone dresses beach casual for everything.
🙂 If I wear yellow at all, it’s sparingly. Not attractive for my complexion.
Found it 🙂 Love the color!
🙂 Found 🙂 ! Yellow is a hard to wear color for me especially butter/pastel yellow, so I usually keep it as pants, shorts. Glad you had an uneventful travel back home. Have a blessed weekend.
